To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

Isn't that why trolleys have the seats for children? (Facing the parents, with the feet sticking out/away from the produce)?

Or are these uncommon in the UK?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 11/06/2018 20:56

no Yael, they are standard, which is what makes it hard to understand why people do this x

37KAT · 11/06/2018 20:58

So it appears that a lot of MN aren’t concerned about this, however many others do agree. I completely agree re trollies being contaminated to begin with however I’m not sure why this should be a reason to add to it. The MN flaming has not made me change my mind. I’m not bonkers and do have a life Wink
Seriously please travel safely with your DC sat amongst your groceries. As stated my friends DS sustained a nasty injury from tipping it over.

Compared to some of the dirty things that can get into supermarket trolleys, the bottom of a child's shoes are pretty tame in comparison.

idlikemoresleep · 11/06/2018 21:04

Never really thought about it tbh but neither of mine have sat in the trolley seat since they learnt to walk, never felt the need to put one in the main bit... knowing them they'd eat everything before we got round!

Everyone's got their pet peeves though! Although after years of working with animals/ on farms we're definitely a mucky bunch so your reasons are a bit ott in my opinion!

Silentnighttwo · 11/06/2018 21:06

YANBU, I think it’s really unhygienic.

MeyYael · 11/06/2018 21:07

four

Thanks!

It's weird, I agree. I probably wouldn't be too concerned about the hygiene aspect.

But it does seem slightly dangerous. a child could fall rather easily if they're sitting in a trolley (instead of the seat) and hoist themselves up...

DuckingMel · 11/06/2018 21:10

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned food and product spillages, to add to the bird shit, general outside dirt, collected arrived car fumes/particles, and rat wee/droppings. If it is a minor spillage, it won't be noticed or cleaned. And there are LOTS of spillages. This all then festers on a trolley. A child's shoes are cleaner.

However, do wish everyone knew about the danger of standing up in it. I had DS sit in for everyone's safety and comfort, but made sure he never ever got up, by keeping a very close eye on him.

Get a life

DottyBlue2 · 11/06/2018 21:13

I put my parakeet in the supermarket trolley today and wheeled it round while I did the shopping. But then I got told to leave the premises. It wasn't even Waitrose

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 11/06/2018 21:14

horsedogbird, we all have lives, don't we?

Hedwigsangryinch · 11/06/2018 21:14

Rats genuinely climb and piss all over trollies, people go to the toilets touch their bits/wipe their arse...probably don’t wash their hands and then hold onto the handrail. I wouldn’t worry about a child sitting in one to be honest.

DuckingMel · 11/06/2018 21:16

No idea where "arrived" came from. I was probably aiming for "accumulated".

Pixie2015 · 11/06/2018 21:19

I used to sit my child in with an apple from a pack kept him happy and quiet for a 20 min shop

bertiesgal · 11/06/2018 21:25

I have 4 DC including 2yo twins. Prior to having them all so close together I really did think I was an expert on parenting. Now I know better.

My DTs have nearly killed themselves trying to get out of the little front facing seats. Straps are no impediment to their batshit determination.

They are happy as clams sitting in a trolly. Despite how messy my kids are a trolly is still probably dirtier than my little cherubs in their Clark’s doodles.

I love mumsnet so much but threads like this make me realise that as I’m struggling round the supermarket (shopping online is expensive and despite the best forward planning in the world we sometimes run out of stuff while DH working a long day) people are judging my every bloody move.

Parenting is wonderful but hard. Can we all just be kind? Is it that bloody hard?!!!

DottyBlue2 · 11/06/2018 21:26

I put my rat a two ee in the supermarket trolley today and wheeled it round while I did the shopping. But then I got told to leave the premises. It wasn't even Waitrose

DuckingMel · 11/06/2018 21:30

Righty ho, Dotty. Our Waitrose probably would have accommodated a parakeet. Not sure about "rat a" or "ee".

gillybeanz · 11/06/2018 21:33

I wouldn't be bothered from a hygiene pov, might be scared they'd fall out.
If they are too big for the seat I couldn't have put them in the trolley.
i'd be too embarrassed that others were watching smug and grinning when the security guards came and told them to get out. As they do in supermarkets round here.
Think a child stood up and fell out, parents tried to sue Grin were told to jog on Grin

DottyBlue2 · 11/06/2018 21:39

I put my MIL in the supermarket trolley today and wheeled her round while I did the shopping. But then I got told to leave the premises. It wasn't even Waitrose

abbsisspartacus · 11/06/2018 21:43

Ok true story friend of mine got pissed as hell one night and thought it would be hilarious if she got in a trolley seat her friends span her around town but she couldn't get out so they wheeled her to a pub and the bouncers helped her out

Really no point to my post just like the op

Seafoodeatit · 11/06/2018 21:46

Meh, who cares if kids sit in the trollies? I've not had to put mine in because a) DC1 was a skinny ninny who fit in the seat for ages and dc2 and 3 fit well in the seats, once it's needed though I may put dc in the trolley, I don't think it's a big deal.

Thorsday · 11/06/2018 21:47

Sitting in the trolley was one of my fonder memories as a kid.

PrincessCuntsuelaVaginaHammock · 11/06/2018 21:56

The fact that they're already manky is a reason why everyone should be taking hygiene precautions to ensure their food and purchases don't touch the trolley anyway.

Fluffyears · 11/06/2018 22:01

@sirzy *Stopping to haul a child out is wasting time and may be in the way of other people

So you never sit a child in the allocated seat either by that logic?

I hate seeing children in trolleys from a safety POV but that point is just rediculous*

No it’s not RIDICULOUS it’s a valid point we had training on. It’s much faster to grab a small child from the proper seat than safely get a larger child from lower down in the trolley. It wastes time and can be really unsade if your rushing and people are shoving past as you are preventing them exiting.

m0therofdragons · 11/06/2018 22:06

Okay, try having twin 8 month olds and a supermarket with only single seats and then tell me how you would do it.

The trolleys are stored outside and can be pooed on by birds and bats or weed on by foxes, but yes kids shoes are clearly worse Hmm
