To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

YANBU OP. The trolleys may well already be dirty but why make them worse. It's just really grubby.

m0therofdragons · 11/06/2018 22:10

@bertiesgal twins really do have more determination than any others to end up in A&E don't they?! Blush

PorkFlute · 11/06/2018 22:14

I love people still saying that the trolleys should be kept as clean as they can be after people have pointed out that they have actual animal excrement on them!
A bit of bird shit on your food is ok then but germs from a toddlers shoes added to that makes it absolutely disgusting?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 11/06/2018 22:17

" twins really do have more determination than any others to end up in A&E don't they?! "

yes they really do. they are always egging each other on, that is the thing.

bertiesgal · 11/06/2018 23:26

Yes! Twins are indeed determined to harm themselves-it’s a unique form of folie a deux. My twins have aged me!

Can there be a special “exception from being judged” for parents of twins who have made it to the supermarket?!!!

Seriously, a day in the life and you’d understand Blush....

SoleBizzz · 11/06/2018 23:31

Oh

BlitheringIdiots · 12/06/2018 06:10

Online shopping is the answer to all of you that struggle to control your children without them sitting in the trolley. No more dragging children round shops and yes you have to pay a small delivery fee but you spend less because you don't impulse buy nor the kids asking for things. We've cut out weekly shop by £20 by shopping online and the delivery fee works out as £1.25 a week for a weekly shop, less if we have two orders :-)

CowParsley2 · 12/06/2018 06:37

I had 3 under 15 months. You'd be surprised how few double trollies there are and how many people who don't need them take them.Impossible to do without one in the trolley.

I didn't want to do online shopping as often combined the petrol money with running errands. Also toddlers need to get out and experience things like shopping.

I used to take shoes off and pop one in the trolley every time. Only ever had one complaint by one over officious worker in Asda. After speaking to the manager and explaining how I'd take my £200 shopping bill elsewhere( Sainsburys) it was soon forgotten.

namechangemaestro · 12/06/2018 06:40

I don't think it's disgusting, but I do think it's lazy. If your child is too old for the child seat they should be walking.
In my local asda there is always boys about 8 years old being pushed round in them. They are always of the same culture, it's bizarre.

CowParsley2 · 12/06/2018 06:48

Negotiating yourself safely across an ever increasingly busy car park with a heavy trolley and espacing toddlers is a big issue too. I used to be surprised how many used parent spaces nearer the door when they didn't need to. They were always full. One in cart makes getting back to the car much safer.

DottyBlue2 · 12/06/2018 06:49

I put Nigel Farage in the supermarket trolley today and wheeled him round while I did the shopping. But then I got told to leave the premises. It wasn't even Waitrose

chestylarue52 · 12/06/2018 06:51

This is why I wash fruit

cricketmum84 · 12/06/2018 06:56

This drives me mad too! Not for the hygiene reasons as I generally wash any loose fruit ogle veg anyway but just cos any kid too big for the properly designed seat in a trolley should be able to walk around a supermarket!
Also there are usually notices on the trollies saying it's banned and I really dislike rule breakers!

SodTheGreenfly · 12/06/2018 06:57

Not necessarily but I honestly think that children sitting in the trolley is a better class of beligerance. Hugo and Jocasta would do it better than Wayne and Britney; but do they?

madcatladyforever · 12/06/2018 07:00

I think that trolleys on the whole are pretty dirty, they are never cleaned and I'm sure all sorts of groceries have broken open and spilled and are festering in there on the metal.
What a lot of people do is to take trolley liners so if you are worried just get a couple of those and put them in the trolley to protect your groceries.

CowParsley2 · 12/06/2018 07:01

My toddlers weren't too big for seats there were just never enough of them.

TammySwansonTwo · 12/06/2018 07:01

So pleased to see some other multiples mums getting in there before me - some people have no idea do they?!

I do online shop, thanks. Sometimes you just need to get a few urgent bits don’t you?

Skyejuly · 12/06/2018 07:01

If the child looks too big for the seat perhaps they have autism or something. I used to put my 8yr old son in the trolley as it was the only way to do my shop with him in the trolley! This was many years ago, didn't have online shop as an option and I lived next to Tesco.

CowParsley2 · 12/06/2018 07:03

Frankly I would have rather my toddler was in a seat than fighting for space with my bread and eggs but there you go. Life doesn't always run strictly according to rules and plans.

Sirzy · 12/06/2018 07:04

Thankfully now most supermarkets have disabled trolleys which either have the bigger seat (not ideal for a child but will do!) or the fantastic firefly ones. Not that I can even get ds near the door of a supermarket anymore but when we could they where ideal!

Lethaldrizzle · 12/06/2018 07:06

It's not something I ever thought about until I joined mumsnet!

TammySwansonTwo · 12/06/2018 07:07

any kid too big for the properly designed seat in a trolley should be able to walk around a supermarket!

How is that people go through life so utterly oblivious to the difficulties faced by others? There are about a thousand medical conditions that could prevent a child from walking round a supermarket when you perceive they’re old enough, not to mention kids who are far younger than they appear. My friends 9 month old is the same weight and almost the same height as my 20 month olds.

musicinthe00ssucks · 12/06/2018 07:11

If I laugh at nothing else today then this will have more than made up for it Grin

cricketmum84 · 12/06/2018 07:12

@TammySwansonTwo I'm pretty sure both of those kids will fit in the normal seats Hmm

The point is that it is clearly not allowed in a supermarket to seat a child in the main body of a trolley. This is for safety reasons as many PP have mentioned eg kids falling out or tipping the trolley. Additional needs imo does not mean you don't have to follow the rules! Especially when those rules are in place for the safety of your little ones.

theveryhighlife · 12/06/2018 07:12

I online shop now. However, I used to let my ds sit in the trolley because- shock horror he wanted to. He thought it was fun, stacking the food around him.
He has no behavioural issues, but I really don't see the problem in saying yes to him if I possibly can. I've not crashed and tipped over a trolley in my years of food shopping and nor has anyone else I know!
