FIL comments about son's DLA

WWYDNameChange · 09/06/2018 14:31

First of all, apologies if this doesn't end up in paragraphs, it should have them, but the app always messes them up for me!

DS is 4 and severely Autistic. He's non verbal, doesn't understand language and can be extremely difficult to manage when out and about. We're currently hiring a SEN pram which is costing us a fortune whilst we wait for special twin one to be made (DS2 is almost 2 and also on the pathway)

Anyway. We see PIL maybe 3 times a month by their request. Tbh, the visits are always a bit stressful as FIL seems very unaware and unsympathetic towards his grandson. FWIW his youngest daughter is only 5 and StepMIL is a childminder, so it's not as if he's not used to being around small children or anything.

FIL seems obsessed with money and seems to 'jokingly' go on about what benefits we get. Even though myself and my Husband don't even claim half the stuff we're entitled to because we get by okay.

Now that our son is 4, we decided to apply for Hight Rate Mobility DLA. We spent months doing the form, which is a gruelling process, gathering all types of reports from different people and even sent in a mandatory reconsideration after he was rejected.

This week, the DLA have awarded DS high rate care and high rate mobility until 2031. I honestly sobbed for four hours with relief. This is absolutely life changing for us, we'll be able to order a car that's safe and big enough for the equipment we need to bring with us, as well as cutting down on the costs of taxis and trains (currently can't afford to run a car at all) DS has several appointments a month, all 10 miles away from home. It's currently a 3 hour round trip on the bus, whereas it's 20 minutes in the car. My Mum and Dad help out where they can, often with lifts and emotional support as they can't physically look either DS.

Anyway. DH phoned FIL to tell him the good news, my parents were over the moon for us and understand how hard we worked to get DS what he deserved. FIL's first and only comment was, 'Well my taxes better not be paying for it.'
Is this how people really feel? Is this what everyone will think of us? Will people really feel resentment at a disabled child being entitled to a mobility car to ensure his safety and quality of life?

I feel so hurt. I half want to give him the DLA form and tell him he's lucky his daughter doesn't meet any of the criteria. This was a celebration for us, even if tainted with a bit of sadness that our 4 year old is now officially severely mentally impaired (that's the name of the criteria he falls under for DLA)

We're supposed to be visiting tomorrow, I don't really want to go, but feel like I need to say something? WWYD? Is there any advice? Or is this something we should just get used to?

Ignore him! Ignorant twat! Thanks

MiserableFucker · 09/06/2018 20:52

I had similar from sadly my own family - apparently I was 'milking it' to get money and 'she's not THAT autistic' (she attends a SEN school and is also non verbal amongst a whole host of other things) My daughter also has cerebral palsy which strangely enough they don't deny because they can see it Hmm

I'm no contact with my family no, for various reasons. Best thing I ever did. Tell him to buck his ideas up or get to fuck. You don't have to mollycoddle people's ignorance and neither does your son

WWYDNameChange · 09/06/2018 21:08

Thank you everyone. It turns out were not going tomorrow now, DS2 is being a tad difficult and it's not worth the stress. Not sure how to handle any future visit requests yet though :(

Silly man! Ignore him!

My OH gets high rate AA - I am sure some people cannot fully understand why. I care not one whit - bugger them!

NanFlanders · 09/06/2018 21:14

I'm a higher rate taxpayer. This is EXACTLY what I want my taxes spent on. Please do claim your entitlement.

greenvalleys · 09/06/2018 21:32

Well done Op, so pleased you got what you are entitled to. I can only imagine how horrific it must have been to get through the forms. Your Fil is an idiot, there's loads of things our taxes go on, we don't get to choose. But what could be more worthwhile than this. Fil should be jumping for joy, what a stupid ignorant fool he is.

Doubletrouble99 · 09/06/2018 21:55

What an appalling man. Good for you getting through those dreadful forms. I managed to do them once for our two but when they needed renewed I just couldn't face it and have revisited them as their diagnosis's have increased but never got any further than the first few pages, I just can't cope with it. I'm even tearing up now thinking about it. Your FIL hasn't a clue!!

Likeindie · 09/06/2018 22:14

What an absolute twat!
My son is autistic and I remember a family member saying to me “ what claim money for him! Wouldn’t that be like cashing in on his disability!”
They have no clue.

greenvalleys · 09/06/2018 22:41

Shock You can't argue with stupid can you.

MissVanjie · 09/06/2018 22:48

This is literally what taxes are for

I am so proud and glad to live in a civilised country with a welfare state and the nhs, too bad it’s being dismantled because of selfish petty twats like this wanting to pull the ladder up after themselves mind

Iluvthe80s · 09/06/2018 22:51

Very glad you are getting support. We get DLA for our son who has asd. I felt a bit guilty to start with as my husband and I both work and are not eligible for benefits. But then I realised it's to help him. It does make a big difference very happy for you

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 09/06/2018 22:53

YANBU, he sounds like a bitter stubborn old man. We too claim DLA for my DS and my brother said well at least my taxes are go8ng to someone I know 😂 I just joked with him said he should pay me straight out his wages.
I’d rather taxes be spent on people that need it rather than those who don’t.

Elspeth12345 · 09/06/2018 23:15

WOW. He does not want to pay taxes that will support his OWN grandson.

I would not visit tomorrow!

WWYDNameChange · 09/06/2018 23:44

@Elspeth12345 we're not going now, thank god haha DH texted him before, DS2 had a fall yesterday and he's still very unsettled from it, wouldn't be fair to any of us. Our stress levels are already quite high haha

We'll have to deal with the issue at some stage though. I won't allow him to think those comments are okay, not sure how I'll make him see any sense though!

I am going to go against the grain a bit here. I have a child with ADHD. She is the apple of everyone in my family's eye- genuinely loved by all. I have told and told them what having ADHD means and how it affects her. They give every impression of understanding, but the really haven't a clue. The either over generalise and assume it is SEN academically- my mum asked me worridly if i thought she would get good GCSEs despite knowing she us in top groups. I think your FIL is clueless and ignorant. Any sort of additional needs is very difficult for anyone to understand.

I too am happy to live in a country where my taxes will help your child during his life ( i was one of the last to find out thay gave DLA for ADHD) and i wou,d advice you to use a bit more of my taxes and claim ALL you are entitled to. Iunderstand why you don't want to, but it will make your child's life easier to have the right toys, playrooms, sensory objects around them Tell FIL to shut up and don't tell him any more of your business.

Oblomov18 · 10/06/2018 10:05

I wouldn't have told him. DLA or PIP is for those that have additional needs. That's it. Your ds does. End of.

WeaselsRising · 10/06/2018 10:26

Firstly congratulations on getting the higher rates, and for such a long time. That's something you won't have to worry about. I claim DLA for my DD and I know how hard it is to fill in those forms.

Really gratified to see so many posters confirming to you that no, normal people do not begrudge you the financial help you need. That is what the welfare system was designed to do; help those who need it. I'm so pleased you have been able to order a car, it will make such a difference to you.

I can see why your DH told FIL. It is such good news he wanted to share it with his father. Who then turns out to be a total dick. Perhaps your DH needs to think of some witty comebacks, along the lines of your taxes paying for FIL's bus pass etc. Unfortunately as someone else said downthread there is no arguing with stupid.

PurpleRobe · 10/06/2018 10:45

Oh my gosh. What a horrible man.

I don't have kids and sometimes joke "my taxes paying for kids xyz... where's my tax break etc" (I know I get out of the system too!)

but I certainly do not feel any resentment whatsoever to disabled children getting the help they need.

I can't believe he said what he said about his own grandchild. I had tears of happiness for you (that you've got help that you need) and I don't even know you.

I would not see that man ever again

dovegrey18 · 10/06/2018 13:29

Anther one here echoing previous posters. People just don't get it Thanks really glad you got the award and I hope you will reap the benefits

SusanneLinder · 10/06/2018 13:34

And this is the sort of thing that I want my taxes to go on. Really happy for you OP.
Your FIL is an arse!

Writingfrighteningverse · 10/06/2018 13:39

Well done you for managing to get what you're entitled to. I know how awful those forms/that process is you deserve a medal for going through it.
I'm afraid I don't have much advice for dealing with a twat of a FIL but please just find a way to block what he says. You've got enough on your plate and it sounds trite but it really is his problem to project his bitterness on you and your family like that. I wouldn't want to be him and I think you're doing amazing. Your family are lucky to have a strong fighter such as you at their heart Flowers

Guacamoledip · 10/06/2018 13:43

How did you get DLA till 2031? Did I read that right? My sons and was reviewed two years ago at age 6 and has until he is 10 before being reviewed again, I thought it was common practice to keep reviewing particularly for developmental conditions?
Really curious because I might actually be able to get a car that our special needs pushchair fits in if I wasn’t worried his benefit will be dropped in less than two years

PennyDreadfull · 10/06/2018 14:09

Screw him and his stupid cruel opinion.

I'm glad my tax money is going to a cause like this.

Are you aware that your son should automatically qualify for a Blue badge too?

WWYDNameChange · 10/06/2018 18:05

@Guacamoledip yep! 2031! 12 bloody years!!! I actually rang them back and triple checked I had heard them right the day before hahaha
I wrote a letter breaking down why DS fits their criteria for severe mental impairment. He also has an EHCP and no mainstream school is suitable. Also, he had to leave nursery for 4 months until he had a 1:1, which I guess is unusual for a 3 year old.
I had to go through mandatory reconsideration, but even with that added time, the whole process only took 6 weeks. We've been incredibly lucky!

OP posts:
WWYDNameChange · 10/06/2018 18:07

@Guacamoledip also, you can get a mobility car so long as you have 12 months left on your claim. You just keep it till it runs out.
ASD isn't really counted as a development condition though is it? It's not like global delay etc. It's acknowledged that DS has an incomplete brain function and that that won't change ever
