To think she should have waited her turn?

We were at the supermarket and DS (3) was playing in one of those car rides that are often found there. He loves pretending to drive the car, but is terrified of it moving and making noises, so I never put money in them (tried it once and he got scared).

DS had been sitting in the driving seat for a minute or so when an older girl (about 5) came up with a pound in her hand and pushed in front of him to turn the car on. When the car started moving, he leapt out of it and started crying. I told him to just wait a couple of minutes until the girl was done. But I thought she should have waited her turn. Even though she was going to pay for the ride, she could have waited a bit and I would have told DS to give the girl her turn. She shouldn’t have pushed her way in front of DS. There was only one seat in the car so they couldn’t have both used it anyway. Her parents were nowhere to be seen. AIBU?

Well, she is little - it's unreasonable that her parents weren't around.

SneakyGremlins · 08/06/2018 18:23

She shouldn't have pushed, no. But I find it a bit odd that a child wanting to use the ride has to wait while a child who isn't actually using the ride - ie turning it on - finishes on it.

Jimdandy · 08/06/2018 18:23

I don’t think she should have waited, if she was going to pay and you’re not. But she shouldn’t have pushed him out the way. She should have asked you to move so she could have a ride.

But being realistic she’s 5, she’s excited, she’s getting a go. It’s just normal child behaviour to be honest. But then her parents should have been there to reprimand her and tell her she shouldn’t have shoved him out the way.

KinkyAfro · 08/06/2018 18:23

Well she was paying to have a go, she might have been waiting for a while

Petitprince · 08/06/2018 18:23

YABU - she was a paying customer so you and your son should have let her go first. No payment means no turn.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 08/06/2018 18:25

Hmmm. Sorry but I think YAB a little U. The whole point of the ride is movement and lights/sounds.

Yes, the girl could have waited, or asked if she could go on. But you weren't using it for its designated purpose. I think the machine owners would be pretty miffed if everyone just sat in them rather than putting money in.

FallenSky · 08/06/2018 18:25

Her parents should have been around but to be fair, she actually wanted to use it for the purpose it was designed for and she had no way of knowing when your DS's "turn" was over as it wasn't actually moving.

She's little and probably hasn't mastered the art of patience and negotiating turns properly yet. Hence why the parents should have been there.

Antigonads · 08/06/2018 18:26

How long should she have waited? It you'd paid, the ride would naturally reach its conclusion. She wasn't to know how long you would let your son sit there.

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 08/06/2018 18:26

She could have been more polite, but she's 5, they aren't exactly known for their patience.

Bit if a non event really.

Glumglowworm · 08/06/2018 18:26

She shouldn’t have pushed but since she was paying and you weren’t you should’ve got your son straight out for her.

FatCow2018 · 08/06/2018 18:27

What?! You actually think paying kids should stand around and wait whilst yours sits in it, not paying?! Why on earth would you think that was even remotely reasonable?! Confused

upsideup · 08/06/2018 18:33

YABU if there was someone who actually wanted to pay to go on the ride they should be allowed first, its not a just seat for kids to just sit on.
Imagine if you wanted to pay for something at the till and the person in front of you just wanted to stand there and look at it? I guess fine if theres no one else waiting but if there is they should move.
But also Shes 5, how can you be annoyed about a 5 year olds actions? Let it go.

TroubledLichen · 08/06/2018 18:33

If the parents really were nowhere to be seen and a 5 year old is wondering round a supermarket alone then not having been taught to wait nicely is the least of her problems. No she shouldn’t have pushed but she’s 5, she probably didn’t ‘get’ that the ride was being used because your son wasn’t actually using it. I don’t think it’s very fair that other kids who actually want a go have to wait whilst he sits in it for an indeterminate amount of time.

SneakyGremlins · 08/06/2018 18:34

Grin "Ooh what a lovely till, I love the design!"

upsideup · 08/06/2018 18:35

Actually as she didnt demand he got out of the car and let him stay in while she turned it on (untill he got scared and got off) maybe she was trying to be kind and making it work for him so they could go on together?

Returnofthesmileybar · 08/06/2018 18:47

Yabu. You should have just taken your ds off anyway when you saw her coming with her money. You ds doesn't get a "a turn" when paying people are waiting

happypoobum · 08/06/2018 18:50

YABU

You should have taken DS away as soon as a paying customer turned up.

Same as everyone else. She was a paying customer. YABU.

I thought the same, she didn’t push him off or tell him to get off did she?

If she had I’d say YANBU but as it stands you sound a bit precious OP.

Juells · 08/06/2018 18:57

I suspect she'd already been there, seen the car, run to her parents and got the money for go, got back and your son was still in the non-moving car going 'beep beep' or whatever. She's a girl who won't be messed with when she's older Grin

Justgivemesomepeace · 08/06/2018 18:57

She wouldn't have known he was having his turn if it was stationary. It would look like it had finished and he was just messing about in it Confused

steff13 · 08/06/2018 19:02

Even though she was going to pay for the ride, she could have waited a bit and I would have told DS to give the girl her turn.

There's no way a 5 year old child would have known that was going to happen. I think it's generally accepted that once the ride stops moving, your turn is over and it's the next person's turn. Being that the ride wasn't moving when she walked up, she probably assumed your son's turn was over and it was now her turn. A reasonable assumption for a small child to make I think.

mrsm43s · 08/06/2018 19:03

The paying customer has priority.

You were extremely rude for not removing your child to let her on.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/06/2018 19:03

YABU
He was taking up space whereas she was going to use the machine properly.
How can you not see this?Hmm
