To wonder who the fuck still likes Morrissey?

I was a Smiths fan. I was a Morrissey fan. I loved the music and the lyrics. Then he got a bit ‘embarrassing Uncle with questionable views but who you still feel an affection for’ in the 90’s. But now he’s just a racist twunt. See here AIBU to wonder who buys his records these days? Surely nearly all his original fan base will have had enough by now? Do any mumsnetters still listen to him?

Angry vegans

Guardsman18 · 07/06/2018 16:42

Who?!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 07/06/2018 16:46

I love The Smiths so I really wish he’d just go away now and stop ruining the amazing musical legacy they have Sad

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 07/06/2018 16:52

His Auntie Barbara. She's a bit brexit though.

dangermouseisace · 07/06/2018 16:53

I’m glad I’m a placid vegan then cantankerouscamel #notallvegans

Still listen to older stuff but he is a twunt agreed.

RayRayBidet · 07/06/2018 16:56

Ugh that ridiculous egotistical Penguin classics book cover. He is an arse.
This is witty and amusing though:

Freshprincess · 07/06/2018 16:58

I wouldn’t buy anything of his and I was a huge fan in my teens.

I still love Smiths music when it comes up on shuffle. This Charming Man is my absolute favourite song. I hate that he’s tainting his legacy, I’m pretty close to deleting all of it.

CantankerousCamel · 07/06/2018 16:58

danger

May have been slightly tongue in cheek.

Sorry I know humour is not welcomed here

robotcartrainhat · 07/06/2018 16:59

I listen to his old music yes... still wonderful music. Wouldnt dream of buying anything new of his. Find his views disgusting and ridiculous.
But yes I do still love his music.

allthatmalarkey · 07/06/2018 16:59

I don't know who if anyone still listens to him, but Johnny Marr says he's a twunt. Or something equivalent.

allthatmalarkey · 07/06/2018 17:00

@RayRayBidet I was going to suggest that! Hilarious.

A lady I used to work with is a massive fan and was really excited when the book came out. I emailed her the link and she laughed and said "Fair do's"

MizCracker · 07/06/2018 17:04

Timely thread. In the car yesterday, The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get came on the radio, and I wondered whether it was still OK to love his old songs Grin

I used to be such a fan. But yes... what a racist twunt. The signs were always there (there's a song I've never heard called Bengali In Platforms ) but now he's just an embarrassment.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 07/06/2018 17:04

I feel this way about Mel Gibson and a few other actors and musicians.

There are a few other people who have done great things but have been absolutely vile partners/parents etc.

I just try to separate who they actually are and what they've accomplished in my head.

Deshasafraisy · 07/06/2018 17:05

Who the fuck ever liked morrissey?!

Pompom42 · 07/06/2018 17:11

I'm a big Smiths fan and even liked some Morrissey songs 'Everyday is like Sunday' and 'Suedehead' but the past couple of years he's been like an embarrassing uncle I agree. He has a lot of dislike for a lot of things. Not living in the 21st century I'm afraid.
Will always love his songs though.
Fave Smiths song 'What difference does it make'

RabidHarpy · 07/06/2018 17:12

Recently I said that I felt as though I had been living a closet Alf Garnet (terrible 70s sitcom with Alf as a horrible racist man).

Feels like Morrissey was hiding this and now is just blatant.

On the bright side, Marr's new album is out this month Smile.

RabidHarpy · 07/06/2018 17:13

I love The Smiths still Flowers.

dangermouseisace · 07/06/2018 17:24

rayraybidet I read his book and that was a pretty accurate précis of it Grin

Jonny Marr was clearly the genius behind the Smiths. At least that’s how I will justify me hanging on to my CD’s.

I think you're unreasonable to ever like Morrissey. Such a pretentious twat - it oozes out of his voice like treacle, and then sticks to your skin. I can't bear his voice at all.

The more I learn about him, the less extreme my view of him seems to be!

hoopdeloop · 07/06/2018 17:29

My DH does, he went to see him with his friend. All of the food outlets were only allowed to sell Vegan food Hmm

HerRoyalNotness · 07/06/2018 17:31

My H does. I can’t stand his melancholy attention seeking music let alone the actual man, and refuse to have it on in the house

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 07/06/2018 17:32

Morrissey is the only person who likes Morrissey.

God he loves the sound of his own inane ramblings.

StoorieHoose · 07/06/2018 17:33

I stopped buying new stuff after about 2006 but the stuff he is spouting now breaks my heart. I still love the smiths and will happily listen to them and his stuff up til You are the Quarry

There is a fabulous thread on twitter about Morrissey now being gammon and the replies are a plethora of song title puns - This Charming Ham!
