To wonder who the fuck still likes Morrissey?

I was a Smiths fan. I was a Morrissey fan. I loved the music and the lyrics. Then he got a bit ‘embarrassing Uncle with questionable views but who you still feel an affection for’ in the 90’s. But now he’s just a racist twunt. See here AIBU to wonder who buys his records these days? Surely nearly all his original fan base will have had enough by now? Do any mumsnetters still listen to him?

Oddly enough a friend of mine tweeted the other day that he'd love to be able to listen to the smiths but can't because it just reminds him of what a dick Morrissey is!

Justanotherlurker · 07/06/2018 19:21

BUT I also think that he is OBVIOUSLY racist now with no nuance. His rant against Sadiq Khan's accent is a case in point.

What!!

I think when you're an active member of a forum that constantly place social markers on pronunciation is more projecting onto him as being OBVIOUSLY racist.

I doubt you will ever get the irony in your statement.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 07/06/2018 19:22

Twitter is gold about it all though....

Well setting aside your reasons which don’t apply to all, on the subject of people we used to idolise that became massive twunts......I give you....
Bono!
Why Bono, why? I loved you, I bought all of your records, I sought out boyfriends with your stupid black mullet haircut, and nearly forty years later this is how you repay me?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/06/2018 19:25

On the plus side though, I always detested Wham and George Michael’s music and thought he must have been a bit of a dick. Turns out he wasn’t, he was hilarious and a bloody lovely human. RIP

Ohyesiam · 07/06/2018 19:26

I’m trying to hope he’s got dementia or a brain tumour to explain his behaviour.

Morrissey, yesterday:

To wonder who the fuck still likes Morrissey?
Kisbot · 07/06/2018 19:56

Rayray thanks! Great link will read the book!
Yes he is being loud and opinionated. Tbh to disagree with the liberal left is funny. It pisses them off so much.

Justanotherlurker · 07/06/2018 20:22

"Gammon", gets red and flustered when angry, anti eu and makes incoherent promises as to if you ignore geopolitics will result in a promised utopia?

As "Gammon" is not apparently to do with race, can we call Abbot a burnt Gammon?

Turns out he wasn’t, he was hilarious and a bloody lovely human. RIP

Yes, I wasn't a fan of his music but what a wonderful man George Michael was by all accounts.

I used to be a huge Smiths fan but Morrissey is a nasty piece of work. So glad my brother talked me out of getting a Smiths lyric tattooed on my arm when I was a teenager Blush

throwawayagain · 07/06/2018 21:53

Me.
He isn't racist.
Bengali in Platforms was tongue in cheek.
Israel is an amazing song. Did you listen to it?

FellOutOfBed2wice · 07/06/2018 21:59

For you as well
Israel.

throwawayagain · 07/06/2018 22:03

Fellout
And who are 'they'?
FFS - The Girl from Tel-Aviv.... he isn't supporting it. He's commentating.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 07/06/2018 22:07

throwawayagain as I said upthread, I think he’s trolling. He’s a pillock for sure but saw him at Ally Pally in March and still think he’s top of his game as a performer. I won’t be throwing my Smiths tee shirts away yet.

throwawayagain · 07/06/2018 22:07

Why all the Thanks for Marr?
He is a spectacular mess, clinging to his Smiths days.
Morrissey continues to surprise me by tackling difficult subjects.
He often approaches from an interesting angle. I prefer an intelligent analysis than the politically straight and acceptable approach.
I know what side he is on. It's really not that difficult.

noeffingidea · 07/06/2018 22:08

throwawayagain he is fucking racist. Read some of his interviews. Black music is shite, reggae is racist, Brixton is bongo bongo land, etc etc.
It isn't just one song and he isn't being ironic.

alibongo5 · 07/06/2018 22:09

@ThinkOfAWittyNameLater - my feelings exactly! Hate his voice - especially on the fucking awful "Heaven knows I'm miserable now". I usually respond (out loud, I often talk to the radio!) with "I wasn't but I bloody am now thanks to you"

I went to a tributes festival last year and there was a tribute act to him - I made sure I went to the stalls then but could still hear them unfortunately. I turned to my friend and said "they must be a good tribute act cos I can;'t bloody stand them either".

TireSwing · 07/06/2018 22:09

I've recently removed all Smiths and Morrissey stuff from my Spotify playlists after I realised I just skipped anytime one of those songs came on. What a dickhead!

throwawayagain · 07/06/2018 22:09

Of course he's trolling. He always has.
The 'Smash Hits' interviews were hysterical.
I will be interested to see his views on this thread.

Changingoftheguard · 07/06/2018 22:12

Me! His views are a bit squ wiff but still... have you listened to home is a question mark? I seen him live this year and moz still has!

xFreePeaceSweetx · 07/06/2018 22:21

Nothing to add except this.

throwawayagain · 07/06/2018 22:21

Morrissey has received criticism and been accused of racism for saying London Mayor Sadiq Khan "can not talk properly."
He also called Nazi leader Hitler "left wing."
Following his contentious statements, he said: "I despise racism. I despise fascism. I would do anything for my Muslim friends, and I know they would do anything for me."

He's bold enough to have an opinion about society, without being racist. This forum gives us all the ability to display opinions which do not directly offend others.
I'm not racist in any way. My DP is Iranian. He loves Morrissey, as I do.
You need to read between the ironical lines.

brizzledrizzle · 07/06/2018 22:23

i'm amazed that anyone ever liked the whiny self-indulgent wank-puffin.

Steady on, that's a bit harsh. What have puffins ever done to you?

scatterolight · 07/06/2018 22:30

I used to love Morrissey. Haven't really listened to his albums since the mid 2000s. But I find his recent outbursts incredibly refreshing so am tempted to give his new records a spin.

Given that polls indicate the majority of people have similar views it's amazing the fuss it has caused. I guess we're so used to celebrities parroting the political orthodoxy that it seems outrageous when one breaks ranks.

throwawayagain · 07/06/2018 22:35

...and I was at his gig at Brixton Academy. There were many diverse people clamouring to hug him. He didn't differentiate.
If you don't understand his humour, then go for some more mainstream music. His target market remain interested.
If he turns into a racist twat, I won't listen.
He's still tackling difficult political issues, and I applaud him. Just be invested in actually analysing his political angle. He has never been a literal artist. He's more intelligent than that!
