Petrol station incident - Who was BU??

BasilFaulty · 06/06/2018 17:04

So just got home from work and on my way back had to stop for petrol.

I pull up at the petrol station, there's two cars at the pumps I want to be at so I wait for one of them to go.

The first one goes (ie the one further away from me) and I drive around the second car that was still there and the blokes still pumping.

I pull in front of his car to the pump and reverse a bit to get it level.

Plenty of room for him to get out still, I'd pretty much just replaced the car that had just left.

So I start fuelling my car, he's now got in his car and pulls up alongside me and goes 'Patience is a virtue you know you BINT'

To which I replied 'Oh, go away' Blush

He looked so shocked!! He couldn't believe I'd answered him back. He obviously thought about saying more but then just slunk off and as he was pulling out he blared his horn at me Smile

When you're waiting for a pump to become free at petrol station do you wait for the pump nearest to you to become free or do you pull in front of necessary??

Surely if everyone always waited if would cause unnecessary queues?

WIBU??

I like your reply.

It hits just the right level of 'you're insignificant'

I do it too. 'Oh be quiet' or 'Oh pipe down' are great. They HATE it.

Just brushing them off like angry little flies.

user546425732 · 06/06/2018 19:16

I'd have replied with "yes, but clearly not one of yours" - it's my go to line.

Grumblepants · 06/06/2018 19:18

Yabu telling him to 'go away'. You should have told him to fuck off!

SoleBizzz · 06/06/2018 19:19

YANBU

I Don't know whyat has got into some drivers. So angry at the slightest thing. Driving through red lights, pulling out on people, ignoring 'KEEP CLEAR' orders. Cutting people up by using the turn right only lane to go straight ahead.

Road rage, petrol station rage in your case OP is pathetic, therr was no reason for him to vent his anger at you. Would he have shouted and papped his horn at a bloke?
Sexist fucking prick.

SoleBizzz · 06/06/2018 19:20

The speeders! Oh my! Drive 40mph on a 40mph zone and be overtaken 70mph. Our road is 20mph and people think it's the motorway, we need speed cameras.

Branleuse · 06/06/2018 19:20

what you did was fine x

InionEile · 06/06/2018 19:23

The rest of that proverb he quoted at you goes, as follows:

'Patience is a virtue, have it if you can
Always in a woman, never in a man'

My father used to love to quote this at us when we were kids. So I would have finished your rude interlocutor's stupid quote off for him, in your situation.

But your response of 'oh go away' is also excellent. It conveys the right degree of bored irritation. Of course you drive forward to use the vacant pump when it becomes free - why not??

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/06/2018 19:24

Yabu telling him to 'go away'. You should have told him to fuck off!

No - go away was perfect - speaking to him like an annoying child completely disarmed him & left him with nothing to come back with. Grin

colditz · 06/06/2018 19:27

"Go away" was perfect in it's mild haughtiness actually. Well done.

PUGaLUGS · 06/06/2018 19:33

He was being a twat.

Deathraystare · 06/06/2018 19:37

. It does seem rude to go around and pull in front...

If a pump is free why can't she use it rather than causing a queue until small penis man goes?

LeeBee11 · 06/06/2018 19:41

What a dick head.
I always pull to the front if that's free leaving enough room for the car behind to pull out.

fizzytonicplease · 06/06/2018 19:47

This happend to me three days ago OP! He didnt say anything but looked at me as he drove past shaking his head. I honestly thought i had forgotten some petrol station etiquette.

I had also left plenty of room for him to be able to get his car out! I was so confused and was going to post on mumsnet about it, so im pleased you have.

Notevilstepmother · 06/06/2018 19:55

Why on earth would you cause queues by waiting for him to finish and then pay?

Ridiculous little man.

flumpybear · 06/06/2018 20:01

You should have said 'oh dear you must need more lessons there's plenty of room to get by Grandad - perhaps you should get your wife to dull up next time 'Wink

In real life - he's a misogynistic fuckwit - don't worry it's him, not you!

Barbaro · 06/06/2018 20:10

You were being nice to him considering his stupidity. He'd have heard much worse from me.

walkingwithmyeyeswideshut · 06/06/2018 20:17

Yanbu.. Id if told him to wind his neck in.

FirstNameSurname · 06/06/2018 20:23

Guys at petrol stations seem to turn into the petrol police but without any logic.

I parked at the first pump. Parking so my filler cap was roughly in line with the pump number bit. So I can stand filling the car and staring at the numbers. Car in front moves and the guy behind pulls in and reverses within mm's of the front of my car. Gets out walks the pump hose back to his filler cap and starts filling craning his neck to see the numbers. Claimed he was correct in doing this and I was parked wrong, claimed all other cars were like his (they weren't) claimed it was in the highway code...he went on.
Later found out the guy always acted like this and had done the same as OP to a friend.

sleepingbaby1125 · 06/06/2018 20:44

Patience is a virtue...
"So is having good manners (and efficiently using petrol pumps to minimise queuing!)"
"Go away" was probably a better response :)
Sounds like a rude man. I bet he'd probably manage to be rude if he was waiting at the back of the queue and the front car wasn't using the only free pump...

MrsDeltaB · 06/06/2018 20:55

YWNBU.

Most irritating I find are folk that pull in and SIT back waiting to see which lane 'may' become free the quickest. I've gone around them a few times just sit and queue FGS.

Last week, pulled up behind a lady as two cars were pulling out of a lane. She stops. At the SECOND pump rather than pull forward to the first! WTH?

I simply pulled off to the next 'other than my can side' and filled up. Silly moo she was!

80sMum · 06/06/2018 21:01

YA definitely NBU, OP! Of course it's OK to pull in front in that situation!

I don't think I would have been as polite to the "gentleman" as you were!

Rozzzzzalmost35 · 06/06/2018 21:07

I'd be raging if someone DIDNT pull in to the available one and caused me an unnecessary wait! Fuelling the car is such a (n unavoidable) waste of time anyway!

Vicky1990 · 06/06/2018 21:18

What you did was the correct thing to do.
The fact that he pulled away from the pump he had used and was able to pass you indicates this.
Pumps are normally spaced to allow customers to pass the car in front.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/06/2018 23:46

He was a tit.
It's perfectly reasonable to do what you did, people do it all the time.
He was just being an arrogant misogynist (as proven by his misogynistic name calling) and yes, absolutely he would NOT have said anything to a bloke!

Don't worry about it, you did nothing wrong.

Shumpalumpa · 07/06/2018 07:27

You are a woman so if course you should have waited.

He wouldn't have said it to a man, that's for sure.
