Petrol station incident - Who was BU??

BasilFaulty · 06/06/2018 17:04

So just got home from work and on my way back had to stop for petrol.

I pull up at the petrol station, there's two cars at the pumps I want to be at so I wait for one of them to go.

The first one goes (ie the one further away from me) and I drive around the second car that was still there and the blokes still pumping.

I pull in front of his car to the pump and reverse a bit to get it level.

Plenty of room for him to get out still, I'd pretty much just replaced the car that had just left.

So I start fuelling my car, he's now got in his car and pulls up alongside me and goes 'Patience is a virtue you know you BINT'

To which I replied 'Oh, go away' Blush

He looked so shocked!! He couldn't believe I'd answered him back. He obviously thought about saying more but then just slunk off and as he was pulling out he blared his horn at me Smile

When you're waiting for a pump to become free at petrol station do you wait for the pump nearest to you to become free or do you pull in front of necessary??

Surely if everyone always waited if would cause unnecessary queues?

WIBU??

YANBU. Patience is indeed a virtue but people have got places to be and it's not like you were impatient going to a free pump Hmm

KarinVogel · 06/06/2018 17:16

No idea what got his tail fathers ruffled but it definitely wasnt anything you did. Perfectly normal forecourt behaviour and to wait 'patiently' until both pumps were clear would have brought about the wrath of the person in the car behind you.
Ive seen someone 'overtake' in this situation so that the sad sap who waited has to wait even longer.

ThereIsIron · 06/06/2018 17:16

Why was there a particular pump you needed to be at? You can use any pump you know

AdmiralJaneway · 06/06/2018 17:17

That’s ridiculous! You were not holding him up or impeding him in any way!! Our local has three pumps on each aisle and a wide forecourt that is deliberately designed for this - the queues would be horrendous if we just waited for everyone to move forward!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/06/2018 17:18

This is something we all need to stop doing.
Twat of a bloke, clearly an arsehole, makes derogatory comment to a woman (yes, it’s ok you can say it’s because you were a woman, for ‘‘twas why he did it)
Woman actually speaks up for herself, and shocks the misogynist.
But then woman doubts herself and has to check just in case she WBU.
DON’T DO IT BASIL! YWNBU, DON’T GIVE IT A SECOND THOUGHT!
Grin

Given that the one OP drive to was empty, I would assume that to be the reason for choosing that particular pump Confused

Pumpkintopf · 06/06/2018 17:18

Gosh I agree with others op you were definitely not BU and he was lucky not to have had more of a colourful reply after calling you that!!

polsha · 06/06/2018 17:18

Sorry ignore that I just reread.

OP tell me you are not a 'one side only' filler!

Racecardriver · 06/06/2018 17:19

Provides that there is plenty of room to get out (that's right, out not in, if you are driving a mini that doesn't make it okto block in a range rover just because you managed to fit in) and the second car isn't taking forever/just got there (only applies if there is someone behind you) then you can do what you feel comfortable. I don't know what a bint is but that guy was a total bint.

Sirzy · 06/06/2018 17:20

I would have been tempted to get back into the car and move it so he couldn’t pass!

Darkstar4855 · 06/06/2018 17:20

YWNBU! I would pull round, it’s stupid leaving a pump empty on a busy forecourt and they are deliberately spaced out so there is room for people to do that.

Thosewhomatterdontm1nd · 06/06/2018 17:24

Ha ha - I was “told off” for doing exactly the same thing as a newish driver some 30+ years ago. Probably don’t need to add by a bloke. The charmer even added that if I was a man I would be lucky I wasn’t thumped.

Still confused about what the problem is.

Racecardriver · 06/06/2018 17:24

@polsha doesn't everyone only fill up on the right side for their car?

NotARegularPenguin · 06/06/2018 17:24

Was there actually room for him to get out though?

Because in a lot,of petrol stations if you do this there isn’t.

I had someone once who did this to me. He managed to squeeze through the gap, I think because there was nobody at that minute at the pumps in the left. By the time I was ready to go the pumps on the left were in use so I couldn’t leave. Had to wait for him to finish pumping and pay. I appreciate that in the grand scheme of things waiting five mins wasn’t the end of the world but he could have waited 2 minutes. I felt he was rude.

I don’t see why he would be so upset if there was room to get out easily. Maybe from his angle there wasn’t room. I always wait. Unless I’m at Asda where there’s loads of space.

TrashPanda · 06/06/2018 17:28

Our local Tesco petrol station has just had a refit and you can't go round car 2 if pump 1 is empty as the gap isn't big enough, unless you have a motorbike. I also heard the woman who was serving tell someone to make sure they pull up with the pump on the correct side as the new pipes don't extend as far as the old ones and so many people have had to change pumps which you can only do by leaving totally and coming back in.

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/06/2018 17:29

OP, I genuinely laughed out loud at "oh, go away" & his failure to reply. what a completely perfect response! Go you! and no, of course he wouldn't have said it to another man

(An L plate jibe would have been good too. I'll try to store both for future use.)

BasilFaulty · 06/06/2018 17:29

notaregularpenguin There was plenty of room, as he proved when he sped off.

Polsha That was the only pump that had become free.

Judas You're right!!! I shall have no fear in future and these men shall hear me ROOOOAAARRR

The80sweregreat · 06/06/2018 17:29

Your not being unreasonable at all -glad you answered him back twant that he was.

petrol station forecourts make me very nervous though - there seems to an air of menace at the bigger ones with the two pumps in a row set up - not to mention how long some people take trying to pay and get half their weeks shopping at the same time - a lot of these places don’t have enough staff to man it all!

polsha · 06/06/2018 17:29

doesn't everyone only fill up on the right side for their car?

Well no, why would they? Surely people just use whichever pump Is available

CrochetBelle · 06/06/2018 17:30

ThereIsIron

I always use the one on the right side of the car, can't be arsed attempting to pull it round/over.
And not all pumps are the same - some hold different fuel, some are pay at pump whilst some aren't.

So please, explain how you know that the OP could have used any pump at this particular station that she didn't specify?

polsha · 06/06/2018 17:30

That was the only pump that had become free.

That is what I thought initially Smile

HonkyWonkWoman · 06/06/2018 17:30

He was a knob.
Everyone does the same as you!
I'm glad you spoke up.
He would have got a bit more from me I'm a afraid. 😁😁😁

Knittedfairies · 06/06/2018 17:30

@Racecardriver - nope, not if the hose is long enough to reach to the ‘wrong’ side.
Kudos OP for saying something to the eejit.

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/06/2018 17:31

@Racecardriver

@ polsha doesn't everyone only fill up on the right side for their car?

No - most modern fuel pumps have a long enough hose to stretch to the far side.

BasilFaulty · 06/06/2018 17:31

Lapdance honestly his face was a picture. I'm normally very mild mannered but the way he did it coupled with insulting me, it just came out.
I am a new woman. This is the emancipation of Basil.
