To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

So apparently we're now at very high risk of exiting the EU in March without a trade agreement with the EU. The government wanted to keep it secret, but it's been leaked that the middle of the 3 outcomes they're discussing, so not the bad one, is the port of Dover collapsing on day 1, immediate food shortages and almost immediate petrol and medicine shortages - as in, no food in the supermarkets. It's in the Sunday Times. AIBU to start stockpiling?

To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

Does anyone know if gas and electricity are likely to be affected? And what happens when there is no or little food and there is no transport? How could that situation be sorted out if there is no prospect of food and petrol coming in? What happens in the first few weeks and months?

Genuinely hungry people will loot your home if their kids are crying from hunger.

Arm yourself and be prepared to defend your supplies

Please don't stockpile petrol. If I think any of my neighbours are doing this i'll be straight on the phone to the police.

Why?? It’s legal to store. We have at least 30L of Diesel and 75L of petrol stored at any time.

Moleskinediary · 04/06/2018 00:10

Look at the upside- it might help with the obesity crisis. We can all have ration books for pasta or fly back from holiday with our suitcases full of smuggled penne.

The diesel is fine. Does your house insurance allow petrol?

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 00:12

"Arm yourself and be prepared to defend your supplies"

Arm yourself with what? We don't have guns in the UK, apart from the likes of guns on farms. Or do you mean knives or somesuch?

Highly stressed and hungry people arguing waving guns or machetes around is probably not a direction we want to go in...

Moleskinediary · 04/06/2018 00:13

From HSE website:

If you wish to store more than 30 litres of petrol and up to a maximum of 275 litres of petrol at your home or premises you need to follow the legal requirements for doing this, which are:

You should notify your local Petroleum Enforcement Authority in writing, giving your name and address as the occupier of the storage place or the address where the petrol is stored. This is not a new requirement but carries forward long standing requirements of the previous legislation.
You can store it in:
suitable portable metal or plastic containers
demountable fuel tanks
a combination of the above as long as no more than 275 litres is kept

I’m afraid I wouldn’t last very long at all in the event of a crisis if this magnitude.

There is just no way I could hurt or possibly kill a desperate parent trying to feed their child, and then what? Leave their child to stave in their home alone?

I’d rather try to form some sort of council estate tribe and share what I’ve got. It’s either work or I wouldn’t last long.

Lots of people who don't live on farms have guns!

keyboardkate · 04/06/2018 00:20

Brexit will not happen in our lifetime, but the pretence will.

We have nerf? We have both water pistol and plastic bullet type. I will get the children practising defending the entrance points. I think the 3 year old can manage the nerf pistol.

Mueslibox · 04/06/2018 00:24

It’ll never happen!

The Irish nationalist (quite sensibly for them) will never, ever compromise on not having a hard border.

The DUP and unionists will (fairly sensibly for them) never, ever compromise on not having an all-ireland sea border.

This kind of stand-off is mother’s milk to NI politicians, and they won’t care if they sit around for a decade refusing to budge an inch on it.

What’s May going to do, unleash the troubles on the UK again by ignoring them? Lose her government by pissing off the DUP? Enrage Ireland thus the EU by messing around with the existing border?

Also, can you see boris Johnson and jrm having an appetite to take on Sinn Fein? Actually, I would love to see it.

Whatever you think about the depressing abyss that is NI politics, it is absolutely true that both sides’ teams are masters of never letting go and never conceding. They’ll just hunker down and derail the whole thing.

May et al will go ‘yes yes, LOVELY blue passports, aren’t they?’ and deliver BINO.

Mueslibox · 04/06/2018 00:25

Keyboardkate just did my tl:dr!

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/06/2018 00:25

Umm - in the event of no deal we crash out of the free skies agreement. There will be no planes going in and out of Britain. There will be no holidays.

Fuck me, but people really don't seem to be getting what 'no deal' means.

Moleskinediary · 04/06/2018 00:27

We have 3 pet rabbits. If I get them on an intensive breeding programme now then we will have enough rabbit for a year. We can make basic clothes and shoes from the skins.

We also have urban foxes which I can catch in the wheelie bin if needed.

We also have quite a large dog Wink

Truscum · 04/06/2018 00:37

My dog is tiny. I might just have to start on DH when the hunger pangs kick in (about three hours after the whole thing starts I reckon) Grin

willsa · 04/06/2018 00:39

I'm not naive. I have approximated and catalogued net weight of all my neighbours. Good deal I'm not living in a posh bit of London anymore as pickings there are much slimmer ( excuse the pun ).

Kursk · 04/06/2018 00:43

@Moleskinediary

Yes our insurance allows for some fuel. Not enough, and not as much as we have stored!!

Arm yourself with what? We don't have guns in the UK, apart from the likes of guns on farms. Or do you mean knives

Anything, it’s doesn’t matter. If you are stockpiling supplies you must be prepared to defend them, or you will probably be killed by looters.

Moleskinediary · 04/06/2018 00:43

It is the start of the Easter holidays when it all starts.

So hopefully we will all be trapped abroad living it up on the insurance if we cant get back. I think that I can claim sanctuary in Europe as my grandmother was Polish.

If you can get them on an intensive breeding programme some of them should be reproducing well by next March.

SwedishEdith · 04/06/2018 00:52

Even a small country like Iceland managed to leave the EU and survive.

Do you mean Greenland? It took them more than two years to negotiate and they only really had to on fisheries and fur. And they still have a special arrangement via Denmark. Population 56,557.

MexicanBob · 04/06/2018 00:53

I haven't read the article but can someone enlighten me as to why and how the Port of Dover will collapse (and even if it did, surely we could use Southampton)?

PolkaHots · 04/06/2018 00:55

This thread is great! I’m loving the preppers contributions. It’s probably good for any society to have some people in it who thing like this Grin I’m not even joking.

Moleskinediary · 04/06/2018 00:56

SwedishEdith

You will be ok. You have IKEA meatballs and absolut vodka.

MexicanBob · 04/06/2018 00:58

Well I'm stockpiling malt whisky in case the Scots get their 2nd referendum and leave the UK.

Moleskinediary · 04/06/2018 00:59
