I think they are ugly and make women/girls look ridiculous. AIBU?

High heels women can’t walk in and are clearly uncomfortable in aren’t great but many women look fantastic in heels.

Women that can’t walk in them look ridiculous.

But a high heel is a thing of beauty.

I rarely wear them as I’m quite tall and also find them uncomfortable. But on a proper dressed up occasion, you can’t beat them.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/06/2018 15:04

I think they've had their day to be honest. There are loads of nice flat shoes around now.

My daughters are 19 and 22. They go out clubbing and dancing in little dresses and trainers.

foodiefil · 02/06/2018 15:05

They elongate the legs. If you can't walk in them then yes you look stupid but otherwise they're flattering and a lot of outfits look stupid without them so YABU 🙄

Don't know what Zibidoo is on about...

ijustwannadance · 02/06/2018 15:10

I would love to be able to walk and dance for hours in heels again like I used to. Had some beautiful shoes in my youth.

Mules are ugly though. They can go.

The shoes that cause walking issues are those with absolutely no flex in the soles.
They don't allow the foot to bend. Like those with solid platfooms or wedges.

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/06/2018 15:10

Glazed, I live in a society where women choose whether or not to wear heels. I don't need to imagine an evening where women wear beautiful dresses and flats. I've been to many. I didn't wear high heels for the whole of last year. I have also worn flats to most of the events I've attended this year.

Perhaps you and your friends feel forced to wear them, that's sad. I can guarantee you that the sky will not fall in, nor will be patriarchy be dismantled because of your footwear. So wear whatever shoes you want and be damned.

fairgame84 · 02/06/2018 15:10

I think they look fab and I'm envious of those that can wear them.
However, I saw a woman walking in high heels last weekend and it was so odd, she was kind of half sitting while walking. She looked ridiculous.
I can't wear heels. I look fab just stood in them but I'm like Bambi if I try to walk in them.

RebelRogue · 02/06/2018 15:11

@TinklyLittleLaugh do they? A lot of the clubs around here do not allow entry with trainers, converse etc. (Fine if you have them in your bag and change after,or just go bare foot).

I can't wear heels anymore, but I still love the look of some of them. It's now even about how I would look in them, the shoes themselves are just so pretty(hence the two pairs under the bed that i never wore).

It's fine to like them and wear them because you want to.

But if you get pulled aside at work for wearing flats, you don't want to.
If it's part of your contract to wear high heels, you don't want to.
If you wistfully look at a pair of flat (or pop them in your bag for later) you don't want to.
If you put them on because you'll be the only one in flat or you worry about what people will think/say, you don't want to.
If you wear them because otherwise your outfit looks shit, you don't want to.

deadringer · 02/06/2018 15:11

I hate the big clunky ones that are in fashion now. Even though I I wore high heels myself when I was younger it seems ridiculous for women to wear shoes that they can't walk in.

Thesearepearls · 02/06/2018 15:14

You don't catch many men in high heels

If high heels were such a good thing, surely the patriarchy would have appropriated them for itself by now?

With you OP. Then I think a lot of things people wear in the name of fashion look ridiculous. Those super pointy shoes some men wear look daft too. They'd hate my wardrobe too, fair dos.

elastamum · 02/06/2018 15:15

YANBU. I also hate heels and no longer wear them. The last ball I went to actually had a basket of slippers near the ladies and half the room was wearing them by midnight. I was very happy dancing away in my long gown and sparkly flats. Who needs to suffer.

KittenBeast · 02/06/2018 15:15

If some daft women want to hobble their feet in painful and damaging shoes that they can barely walk in, in order to please men, that’s their choice. Rather like Victorian whalebone corsets, or foot binding- it’s a useful identifier for idiots who have sold out to the patriarchy

You sound nice.
When I wear heels it's got absolutely nothing to do with 'pleasing men'
Don't be so absurd.

80sMum · 02/06/2018 15:16

"I kind of agree with Babdoc"

^My thoughts exactly!

Eolian · 02/06/2018 15:16

I don't think they look bad, but they are impractical, uncomfortable and help perpetuate an image of women which I find distasteful and sexist - the idea that women should suffer to be beautiful, and that there's nothing wrong with women's attire being flimsy, uncomfortable and impractical, because what's important is that they look pretty. Something as physically limiting as high heels would never become fashionable for men - they wouldn't tolerate it.

Well, I'm not a particular fan of high heels, but what a load of shite. Wear them if you want/don't wear them if you want but you don't get to tell people that they're idiots for choosing different footwear to you. Have you any idea what that makes you sound like? Not much of a feminist are you ..?

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/06/2018 15:18

Yes I did.

Eolian · 02/06/2018 15:18

Oh and when I said it's sexist, I don't mean that women wear heels to please men. Women are perfectly capable of perpetuating these stereotypes all on their own - it's largely women who judge other women on their fashion choices, not men.

PickAChew · 02/06/2018 15:19

I agree that they are ridiculous but it can be entertaining watching someone attempt to negotiate Durham's cobbled streets in them, after a few lemonades.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/06/2018 15:19

Glazedover Of course women can choose. They can choose not to attend ridiculous events which dictate nonsense rules like this. They still have a choice.
