I think they are ugly and make women/girls look ridiculous. AIBU?

I think they look good when the wearer is standing still, but quite often shit when they try to walk.
I also think it's beyond absurd when women wear trainers to walk in, and then change in to heels when they get to work. Because they can't walk comfortably in them. So don't wear them then!

I agree. I thought so when I saw the pictures of Victoria Beckham at the royal wedding. Heels that high don't do anything for any woman. Why would you wear something that causes pain and slows you down? Thank god I'm tall, that's my excuse for never, ever wearing the horrid things.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/06/2018 14:39

I was at a wedding once and there was a beautiful woman there wearing flats. She was the only female there with flats on, and she looked amazing.

Kaykay06 · 02/06/2018 14:39

So nice of you to say women look ugly in something just because YOU don’t like them.

Not all heels are super high stilettos and not everyone is unable to walk in heels. I tend to go for a comfy shoe boot type heel fairly high but I can actually walk/dance in them if needed and some Mary Jane heels which are really comfortable, and look nice. I do tend to be a flats girl otherwise I’m a nurse so on my feet a lot then running about with kids so it’s njce to dress up when I get the chance.

Oh and I do it for ME, not for a man. I’m short so like a little height, we are all entitled to our opinions but I tend to not tell people they look ugly etc I don’t much like people who are unkind unnecessarily, some opinions are best kept to yourself.

CloudCaptain · 02/06/2018 14:40

I lived in heels (effortlessly) until the age of about 32 when I had my first dc. Started wearing flats for obvious reasons and now find heels look a bit, well, ridiculous. Although I would still wear them for special occasions.

LighthouseSouth · 02/06/2018 14:40

I kind of agree with Babdoc.

Amanduh · 02/06/2018 14:41

Yes, all high heels are ill fitting, all women can’t walk in them, they all look ugly. Hmm I like them, not every day but on a night out, they make my legs look better so Grin

happymummy12345 · 02/06/2018 14:42

How strange. I can't walk in them and they kill my feet, but I love the look of them. I'd wear them if I could.

Amanduh · 02/06/2018 14:42

Oh and I think that badly fitting ballet flats with peoples feet half hanging out and the sides gaping are much uglier!

GriswaldFamilyStaycation · 02/06/2018 14:42

They're insane if you think about them. They aren't ugly as ugly is just a culturaly imposed idea and we're used to them so most people would think they are quite pretty but I'm sure an alien from space would be like Hmm about them

Natasha2 · 02/06/2018 14:43

I think that anyone who wears high heals should not be able to get treatment on the NHS when they get foot, back and muscle problems caused by the monstrosities.

They are absolutely riduculous things to wear and I can't believe that so many supposedly intelligent women still wear them mainly due to the pressure from men and society in general.

@Moleskinediary

Feet were bound from early childhood- no choice- so not selling out.

You're missing the point. The parents/society were selling out.

fonteynmargot · 02/06/2018 14:45

YNBU I hate them but I am an old crow sonwhat do I know? Grin

fonteynmargot · 02/06/2018 14:47

Yes glazedover I agree and come to think of it Pointe shoes in ballet should be eradicated too.

nakedscientist · 02/06/2018 14:48

Totally agree. YANBU

I thought this when Megan Markle gave her (female) guests slippers. She knew that all those very expensive heels would be hurting like hell. Do men do this? Do they hell! they wear nice comfortable FLAT shoes and no one says they don't look smart etc.

Its total madness, but yet most women do it.

I agree, OP. They disable and weaken women. To me, they are just one step away from foot binding and corsets.

N0tfinished · 02/06/2018 14:54

I think they're a swizz, and have shades of Chinese foot binding. Men's clothes & footwear by contrast are very comfortable & permit total ease of movement. The only male fashion item that's completely non-functional is the tie! Women's fashion is full of non-functional items that restrict & disable. I think it's improving though, as we get more casual.

I do wear heels occasionally (not mad high ones) for weddings etc. I think very formal clothes don't look great with flats. I always end up in 'old lady' brands for comfort. I equate it with religion- my brain tells me it's all superstition but I still whisper a prayer sometimes.

ChinkChink · 02/06/2018 14:56

Me on way home from pub last night.

Ooh a Let's Attack Women Who Choose Differently From Me thread. How feminist. [Hmm]

MaterialReality · 02/06/2018 14:59

YANBU. I think they look ridiculous too. Especially if the toes are also absurdly pointy instead of, you know, foot-shaped. I never wear heels and have attended black-tie dinners and weddings in flats. Nobody commented. It really isn't a big deal.

Of course everyone should be free to wear whatever they want instead of what I think is best. If you want to wear heels, go for it. It's the 'I hate wearing them but I have to' argument that makes no sense to me.

DN4GeekinDerby · 02/06/2018 14:59

I personally don't get the appeal and haven't worn any since I was a kid (heels were very popular for certain types of dancing and performances and for some mothers it was a bragging right if their daughters could perform in them well). A childhood of wearing awkward shoes and clothes has certainly left me with a desire for comfort in my attire.

I think there are some very pretty shoes and some very ugly shoes of all types. One of my daughters loves these really bright multi-coloured spotted and stripped trainers and I do not get the appeal at all, but they're her shoes. I bet others would find my much beloved floral boots ugly. I think whether or not they make the wearer look ridiculous depends on whether they can walk in them well, a woman who is teetering along is very different to one who walks in them smoothly. Some women can run in the them. It's like long skirts, some trip in them and others move very well in them.

I will admit when my daughter was looking at secondary schools, I did find it odd how many of the staff were teetering. I would have thought working with pre-teens/teens, it would be a risky decision to not have shoes one could walk or run well in.

DustyMaiden · 02/06/2018 15:00

wear them to sit and put your legs in the air, for walking they really are ridiculous. I couldn't see men ever putting up with them.
