To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

That’s why I do stay away from mental health! I have no clue!

Goingovertosusanshouse · 11/06/2018 14:00

I would also say an awful lot of instagrammars jumping on the mental health bandwagon also need to stay away from it.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 11/06/2018 14:02

Agreed jamon. It's tiring.

Keepitw0nky · 11/06/2018 14:36

@spongebob I had to unfollow Mrs Hirons yesterday, her bashing of anyone who thinks differently to her is getting so boring and her tone is always patronising.

CadyHeron · 11/06/2018 14:38

I agreed with what you were saying about any money made from it as that doesn't sit comfortably, but to say some don’t seem like mental health problems, just day to day life problems which I think trivialises it all - I can't agree with that.
Saying somebody is "just having day to day life problems" is kind of trivial and dismissing in itself. You're not them, you wouldn't know.

Goingovertosusanshouse · 11/06/2018 14:38

Hirons behaviour is shitty so frequently. I’ve unfollowed too.

Goingovertosusanshouse · 11/06/2018 14:40

The way I’ve worded it is wrong and I can see what you are saying cady regarding my comment.
It just seems that from the threads and stories, everyone has a mental health issue and surely that can’t be the case?

CadyHeron · 11/06/2018 14:46

goingover I see what you mean more with It just seems that from the threads and stories, everyone has a mental health issue and surely that can’t be the case?
I think people feel more comfortable talking about them now. I think it just seems like a lot of people have a mental health issue if there''s a lot of comments all in one place - which there will be on those type of posts as people will be reading, maybe resonating with what's being said, and adding their own comments.
It won't attract comments from say people who don't have the same issues, so it maybe seems skewed to look like everyone has problems.
If you see what I mean? I could probably do with rewording that but I've got a school run to go do and no time to re-read and edit it Smile

ConfidentialWaste · 11/06/2018 14:52

In my view, if you haven't experienced mental health issues first hand, or had someone close to you experience them, it is possible to be a bit flippant about someone saying they feel anxious or depressed or whatever. I've have a family member who suffers from anxiety and other family members have been fairly glib about it. Who really knows the depths of despair people can be in unless you live it and breathe it with them everyday? Reading about other people's experiences on these threads and on IG has educated me about these kind of issues and talking about these kind of things is part of the education process for both people who have MH issues and people who haven't had first hand experience of them.

M5 you actually sound like you could add something valuable to the conversation and possibly help some of us understand these issues better, but your "bunch of amateur bitches" attitude isn't going to do that, which is a shame.

ConfidentialWaste · 11/06/2018 14:54

I still can't warm to the idea of monetising MH "expertise" though.

jamoncrumpets · 11/06/2018 16:14

It's pretty insulting to have my MH issues dismissed as 'day to day life' on here, when I've been in various forms of treatment for over half my life. But I guess if it takes insulting somebody to make a point, M5slowdown, then you're just the kind of poster to do it. But I won't stay and discuss a topic in a place where people are prepared to make such low blows, so I guess you've won. Enjoy the debate. I'm out.

jamoncrumpets I think you've misread the comments a little bit as m5 was responding to a comment already made on here.

Goingovertosusanshouse · 11/06/2018 16:16

Sorry jamoncrumpets, that was me. I’m really sorry, I didn’t word it as I meant it and I apologise.

jamoncrumpets · 11/06/2018 16:19

Fine, I misread it. Apologies M5. But the sentiment still stands. Bye.

I can’t explain what I mean by it apart from that every person on Instagram says they have a mental health issue which trivialises those who do suffer. Not everyone does have one but according to Instagram everyone seems to and there are ‘experts’ making money from this. A lavender flannel and a bit of time to yourself won’t solve mental health issues but this seems to be a lie being sold to us. I didn’t mean to be dismissive and I’m sorry.

Does anyone have any idea how much an instagramer with say 50,000 followers makes?

I mean if a family is able to live affluently with no other job/income source....they must make loads?

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 11/06/2018 16:36

I've not unfollowed Hirons, but muted her stories a while back. I think when she had a runny nose and about 450 'woe is me' stories from her sick bed! It was extreme.

Oddly she hates mumsnet despite most of the people I know who follow her discovering her on a recommendation on here, including myself. I do really rate her skincare advice (made a massive difference to my skin) but I think even she maybe had some heat about affiliated links and the likes. I'm sure she says now that she doesn't do any of that. With the exception of her partnerships with Pixi and her own range I guess. Could be wrong on that though.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 11/06/2018 16:39

Some big influencers are listed companies so you could check stilldazed.

I think it's some of the youtube lot that make the most. And if they have a book deal it's usually a good sign they're coining it in.

ConfidentialWaste · 11/06/2018 16:43

Well, I hope you're happy now M5. With your nasty attitude you've made someone with real MH issues, (some of the posters who have contributed their own experiences I have learned a lot from from on these threads) feel like they have to leave with your digs about 'amateurs' and other aggressive posts, many of which have already been deleted by MN. You know NOTHING about the posters on these threads other than your own assumptions.

ConfidentialWaste · 11/06/2018 16:45

I've had enough too. Enjoy. 👋🏼

CadyHeron · 11/06/2018 16:45

Does anyone have any idea how much an instagramer with say 50,000 followers makes?

That'd depend on your reach, surely. No point having thousands of followers and no engagement from them.
The more genuine engagement, the higher the earning potential.
Every account will be different.

CadyHeron · 11/06/2018 16:47

confidential m5 was responding to comments already made, bit unfair to say it was her when it's been clarified it wasn't.

Goingovertosusanshouse · 11/06/2018 16:48

It was me who made the comments. Not m5. It was an ignorant, not well thought out comment and I’m sorry for the upset I’ve caused with it.
