To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

But you say the same thing every time too Cady, and pop up on every thread in which this topic is discussed. Nobody is making you do that.

Jam- when there's an identical thread running on a topic, people point it out. Just doing the same as there's two on the go now about the same thing.

Boredandtired · 30/05/2018 16:02

I got the feeling jam was trying to make a more positive thread. Unfortunately the nature of the term influencer is just so awful it just ends up being the same!

Hideandgo · 30/05/2018 16:07

Everyone is so righteous about the way they earn money.

Whether you’re a shop assistant or work for a company, work in advertising or as a plumber. The majority of jobs revolve around getting as many people to believe in you (your service or product) and then hawking the shit out of it.

Give over about Insta-influencers. Fair play to them making money out of their ‘brand’. It’s no better or worse than the majority of jobs.

*yes I know Susan is a nurse and hawks nothing thank you very much!

AlfredDaButtler · 30/05/2018 16:17

Fair play to them making money out of their ‘brand’.

What about the "making money out of their kids in an unregulated environment" criticism?

Hideandgo · 30/05/2018 16:20

Their kids their choice their risk. I wish I had such a running storybook of my childhood.

lamerde · 30/05/2018 17:03

@Namechanger41

I noticed that about CA and her mums’s 60th.

They’re so incredibly rich through their family’s publishing business that it seems tacky to be promoting stuff on instgram for a few extra bucks.

AlfredDaButtler · 30/05/2018 18:45

It's funny how the parents of child actors/models don't get the same choice to take that risk. Children who are actually employed, rather than just shown off at Disney to fulfil the contractual obligation of their parent, have to have a license to be employed and there are strict conditions their employer has to meet regarding working conditions. A very clear line is drawn between work and real life.

A running storybook of your childhood that's your mum going on about how much she loves the fun prints from this season Next #ad, when the kid just thinks they have more new clothes and the phone is pointed at the again so they better pose like they've been drilled to. How nice for them.

Hideandgo · 30/05/2018 19:00

My heart bleeds for the poor children. 😄

AlfredDaButtler · 30/05/2018 19:04

Clearly.

PolkerrisBeach · 30/05/2018 19:06

You know what, it's really easy to ignore these people altogether. Don't watch their social media feeds. Don't waste your life watching their videos. Who cares? Really, these are ordinary women who are doing ordinary things and people watch it?

SparklyLeprechaun · 30/05/2018 19:14

Hate? I don't hate them, I just think they are a waste of space, in much the same way as cold callers. I couldn't be bothered to expend any energy in actually hating them.

Growingboys · 30/05/2018 19:32

What lamerde said:

What I’ve taken from it is that their egos are stroked on instgram and elsewhere they’re questioned on the transparency of what they’re promoting and they do not like it one bit.

Boredandtired · 30/05/2018 20:07

@alfreddabuttler it's not really funny. You don't know their names and their families aren't brands.

AlfredDaButtler · 30/05/2018 21:16

Exactly @boredandtired. Those children are far more protected because they aren’t unknowingly part of a brand, and no one knows their names, where they go to school, date of birth, about that time they shat in the bath etc

MadameGrizzly · 31/05/2018 08:08

I am very interested in the broader issues of peer influencers, especially those who do it really well. I'm not so interested in aspirational or expert influencers, though. I've no reason to hate anyone on IG, even if I don't agree with their business ethics.

The problem with these threads is that they are relentlessly redirected back to a couple of influencers. It's both uncomfortable and a bit boring when there are so many interesting points to debate.

I did notice on the other thread there was discussion about posters mysteriously disappearing. I haven't disappeared! But I couldn't possibly comment on a thread with the word 'hun' in the title. Also, see my last point!

The only other posters who seem to have gone a bit quiet are @FlyingBird and @NeverWas. I've obviously no idea what their reasons are.

/shrug

MadameGrizzly · 31/05/2018 08:12

Actually, it was @NeverWas1 as there was some sort of IT issue I think that necessitated a small name change?

Sorry, NeverWas!

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2018 08:14

I doubt MN hates social media influencers since it spends so much of its time trying to influence us with blogs, adds, MN swears by, product tests, surveys etc

TempleOfBlooms · 31/05/2018 08:27

Some of the recent MN threads on influencers have been dominated by personal criticisms of a tiny number of named influencers. To pretend the debate has all been intelligent commentary on the risks of a new phenomenon is just not true. There have been some intelligent analysis but also a huge about of bitching.

It sort of reminds me of the Moldie threads years and years ago when popular mumsnetters went off and made their own site and those left out of the popular group carped on here for months and were quite personal about some of the Moldies who left. It was in group/out group dynamics played out just like in the school playground and so is this.

MarshaBradyo · 31/05/2018 08:42

It does go round in circles, if everyone agreed it probably wouldn’t

I enjoy reading the more generic posts from people but know it can be hard to keep posting on the same topics (without specifics)

MadameGrizzly · 31/05/2018 08:47

I agree, Marsha. Specifics are useful to illustrate and support a point, but there are so many genres of influencing - parenting, fashion, health, beauty, interiors, food, fitness, others-I-know-nothing-about - that it would be so interesting to widen the discussion.

MarshaBradyo · 31/05/2018 08:49

But I would like to not mention the same accounts as when they’re not mentioned I find I forget about them and revert back to the place before all the threads began - happily unaware

The point about Mn is interesting as I’m sure they’d like us to be happier followers of this stuff

MarshaBradyo · 31/05/2018 08:51

Agree MadameG
Btw pleased you’re back! Actually did miss you on one of the threads - goes a bit crazy without other topic introducers

MadameGrizzly · 31/05/2018 08:52

Does plagiarism happen with fitness routines? Recipes? Make up?

Are influencers receiving undisclosed #gifted double glazing, paint and taps?

We need someone to spill those beans!

MadameGrizzly · 31/05/2018 08:59
Smile

I've been genuinely busy at work with the implementation of a big project - following policies and procedures, complying with legislation, declaring gifts, ensuring minimal disruption to minors. You know, the usual. Wink
