To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

M5 me and jamoncrumpets are separate posters. And I was being facetious.

m5slowdown · 10/06/2018 17:08

Posting as individuals does not alter the meaning and or offence a comment causes. If you use a phrase which has the connotations @jamoncrumpets has highlighted you are offensive. Simples!

jamoncrumpets · 10/06/2018 17:12

There are couple of people on here being deliberately obtuse. Enjoy your Sunday, folks. I'm off to bounce on a birth ball.

I'm not sure what your point is M5. I didn't direct my comment specifically at you. What I said has no connection at all with what Jam said. I understand you're upset your posts were deleted. Just try to stay in the talk guidelines. I know it might be difficult if you're used to Instagram.

You are being really unpleasant M5. And I'm reporting you.

QuickWash · 10/06/2018 18:43

@cady I'm not refuting it, just pondering the phenomena. And it does seem that a lot of the likes and comments are peer to peer so a slightly skewed way of measuring 'popularity' or reach. But I guess advertisers would only use this format if it was proven to drive sales, so it must be very effective and worth their while. I guess the difference between people watching on here and there is that here has a degree of anonymity and reversibility, Insta is actual pictures of actual children/homes/belongings and harder to leave behind if you change your kind about sharing all your info.

M5, I'm not sure I'm making a value judgement. Although instinctively there's a lot that makes me feel uneasy about the ramifications of some of this.

I'm new to exploring this and interested in a slightly observational way like I would be about any 'sub culture'

ConfidentialWaste · 10/06/2018 18:54

I think it has to be a very effective way of marketing - followers have already made an active decision to follow and engage with you, so there is no cold-calling as such, the battle is half won. All you need to do is match up their spending power to a need. The influencer's role is to create that need and this is done by showing you a lifestyle you want to emulate in some way. In a way, IG is like mainlining adverts into your subconscious. By tagging them as ADs and making them transparent this gives the followers a chance to make a more conscious decision about whether the need is a real one or not.

QuickWash · 10/06/2018 19:20

And I guess #gifting and #hosting is way way way cheaper than paying for ad campaigns and they don't even have to line up a photographer!

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 10/06/2018 19:21

Haha, I do hope it’s NB. Thanks for the lavender flannel rundown! I had no idea what it was and often wondered. Grin Grin

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 19:24

Although quickwash a lot of them do use and credit a photographer on the larger accounts. But as you say, it must be much cheaper than advertising campaigns, which is why the brands love IG so much. And as Confidential said it's a much more effective way to 'mainline' advertising because we are not used to it as a medium.

ConfidentialWaste · 10/06/2018 19:25

Yes, QuickWash, they don't have to pay for a photographer (in some cases), models, child model chaperones, shoot locations, copy writers.....nothing. I think many bloggers are actually being exploited by the brands. No wonder they keep telling us how much hard work it is.

Moonkissedlegs · 10/06/2018 19:42

@Whirliegigspiders what kind of teen YouTube accounts do you mean? What kind of illnesses?

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 21:05

Ah she's back.

sofialemon · 10/06/2018 21:16

To whoever implied I'm @m5slowdown, I'm not.

I've been dipping in & out of these threads but haven't bothered commenting. I don't share any of the concerns many of you have re "using" children on insta. I can't get worked up about non disclosure.

I think there is a mixture of jealousy, contempt and disdain fuelling these threads but as long as the discussion stays generalised I don't see the harm.

The Meldrum's seem to be your latest target but there doesn't seem to be the same level of vitriol towards them as there is/was towards MoD (who I'n glad to see back).

These threads are just a place for you to bitch about the various instagrammers you dislike, if that makes you happy, crack on. It's just a bit pathetic.

CadyHeron · 10/06/2018 21:21

Don't worry sofia, you should know by now if you don't follow the majority view, you must be an IGer or a sock puppet or something Grin

Absolutely.

and MOD has a break and comes back, why? Just to be adored? Famous? Rich?

because it's her business?
Or maybe because she wants to come back as she actually likes it? Why shouldn't she?

Boredandtired · 10/06/2018 21:32

@cadyheron I've no idea who would be jealous of these people who have to make every bit of fun or life a photo opportunity for 1 million strangers, but at least there's always you 2 obsessively fighting the other corner, questioning the true morals of those who cannot believe the nonsense and circus these people have turned their previously highly desired lives in to. Yes I respected these people for their original USP, no I am not remotely interested in the new influencer rubbish, and to keep assuming it's jealousy is arrogant and ridiculous. You may crave insta fame, lots of us don't, but loved the true accounts and photos originally.

ConfidentialWaste · 10/06/2018 21:32

I definitely have feelings of contempt and disdain for some of the shady operators (not all influencers as a whole). Jealousy? Not so much, because I know my own circumstances are fairly privileged. I have empathy for people who may feel a bit jealous of some of the stuff shown on feeds as 'normal'. Unlike you both though I see that as part of the problem with influencer marketing, not a flaw of the followers or people who comment on MN.

Boredandtired · 10/06/2018 21:33

@cadyheron, absolutely, and good luck to her. But makes you wonder about society doesn't it. When fame and money are worth more than your private life and family.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 21:34

Good luck to mod. I was missing the fab house, that lydiawoodpowerjewellery owned and renovated beautifully before the ODs bought it.

CadyHeron · 10/06/2018 21:34

Boredandtired you personally may not be, but a few on these threads have come right out and actually admitted it.
I didn't say for you personally, but some clearly are which is a bit sad when they're obviously making themselves miserable by not being able to tear themselves away.

m5slowdown · 10/06/2018 21:40

YES! This. Smile
