To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

There's no way of ever proving that somebody with an 'invested interest' is posting here under a pseudonym and, if anything, it gives those mentioned yet another reason to roll their eyes and go 'those crazy MN witches'. Again.

I'm with @jamoncrumpets - if someone has nothing to add, and as we know people would love these threads to be shut down, it's probably best to ignore and move back onto the topic

Fivelittleduckies · 10/06/2018 15:44

Ok so question: if someone is obviously promoting something (under the guise of “loads of people have asked me about this so here is the info”) does this bother you? To me it feels like a sneaky way to promote something that’s been gifted

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:46

I've reported all the posts that I don't feel are acceptable according to MN guidelines. I don't care what IG say about my comments. I don't see myself as MN. I am an individual posting on a public forum.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:48

And the posts I've reported have been deleted.

Nah nothing to say about said IGer. Came up on my feed. As you were M5.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 16:12

As I was saying, I think the interior feeds are pretty transparent. Where it has been cloudy is when non interiors have been promoting interior products i.e. This season's rug. There were lots of mentions of the rug on non interiors accounts and they turned up in lots of houses without any mention of gift or ad. Perhaps they all they just loved it.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way M5, but really nobody cares who you are only that you tried to troll the threads. Let us know when the results of your experiment are published though because I am interested in your findings.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 16:23

Right hands up, apologies for speculations. Totally confused by goady posts on previous thread about mother freckle (which were completely ignored by other posters), and quite extreme reaction to discussion of meldrums and then outrage when someone mentioned the 'Lavender Flannel'.

But I'm not going anywhere M5. And I'm still reporting you.

Me too.....reporting is an equal redress!

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 16:31

Err I don't know what you're talking about now M5. Maybe calm down a little.

QuickWash · 10/06/2018 16:36

This thread has got me looking at so many of these feeds on IG and I just find it completely baffling that so many people follow these accounts! Utterly incredible. It cannot be that 15k people find someone lying their baby next to a bunch of peonies and bemoaning having to wait in for the shopping that fascinating? And feel the need to make some v bland comment?! So so weird and very disingenuous as almost every comment is from a similar type of poster.

m5slowdown · 10/06/2018 16:39

Not sure confusion brought on by my allegedly 'goady posts', 'quite extreme reaction' to Meldrums and 'lavender flannel outrage' presents any justification for your preposterous suggestions that I am NB. You need to check yourself.

Whirliegigspiders · 10/06/2018 16:41

There's a whole load of young teens making an Insta career out of being unwell. When they hit 16/18? Not sure which they start getting paid promotions. But years of building up followers and getting sent free stuff from companies.

I do worry what happens if they start to recover...none of them I have seen have they have just collected more and more diagnosises that are exaggerated to the MAX. Screenshots of NHS worst case scenarios banded about like they are actually happening.

As soon as they get admitted the cameras are out photographing every single cannula because it increases the YouTube views therefore more money if videos are being monetized.

If they chit chat about normal day to day stuff they get less likes. Medical high drama gets more clicks. So isolates them from friends and every day stuff.

It's a huge worry.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 16:41

I'm mostly into interiors but peonyvintage is a lovely vintage clothes feed. I don't follow any accounts that aren't my cup of tea.

m5slowdown · 10/06/2018 16:42

But they do....baffle away! Who are you to judge what other people want to follow? Mind your own business and let people do what they choose. There is 15k people interested in a baby lying next to peonies whilst said baby's parent waits for shopping....get used to it!

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 16:46

Got ya M5. You're not NB. I've already apologised for the speculation.

CadyHeron · 10/06/2018 16:49

Quickwash - these threads alone show there's huge interest in those kinds of accounts.
Plus there's something sort of compelling about the mundane such as waiting for shopping.
I caught myself watching somebody unpack their shopping (or should I say haul) the other day and talking about it.
Then had a WTF am I doing moment Grin
People watching really isn't it. Kind of like when people come on MN.
That's people watching too.

Whirlie StyleMesunday did an interesting story about her concerns about teens on SM. I think it's in her highlights. It's really important for teens to have good role models. I really admire SMS's body positive commentary and the accounts she recommended for teens.

jamoncrumpets · 10/06/2018 16:49

I don't think there's anything wrong with being concerned about unregulated mental health advice being dished out on SM by anyone that fancies having a go. I can't simply unfollow and ignore accounts that monetise mental health. My reasons for this are both personal and professional. I'm not being a busybody, I have genuine and serious concerns.

I've seen a lot of posts about 'pulling up the drawbridge' recently, for example, from two reasonably prominent influencers, one of whom has a mental health angle to their account. And I've noticed two 'regular' mums that I follow subsequently reusing that term with regards to their own lives. So when influential Instagram personalities use phrases like this they stick. And 'pulling up the drawbridge' - in my case, and the case of many others that I know with MH struggles, would be absolutely disastrous for me. It's not good advice. And it's framed as such.

m5slowdown · 10/06/2018 16:57

Perhaps @wearelocal you need to take note. 'pullingupthedrawbridge' is a phrase you yourself lobbed against me in this thread. Offensive much.
