To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

Jamon, you articulated my views on the lavender flannel better than I could have have done.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 14:34

Oh look m5slowdown you've been moderated. It ain't the Wild West here like IG.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 14:34

Jamoncrumpets 👏🏻 The voice of reason.

Moonkissedlegs · 10/06/2018 14:37

Woah, this has gone a bit crazy, I'm completely lost!

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 14:39

Moonkissed m5slowdown has sock puppeted from one thread to another without a name change. That's all really.

BeautyBox · 10/06/2018 14:52

Anyway, getting back to the topic - @ConfidentialWaste, your post about interiors account was interesting and I imagine that's a fairly new thing.

Rewind 10/15 years and everyone had the same Ikea bookcases or Heals chairs but the conformity to the Instagram style is striking now. I went to see a friend this week who has divorced and bought her own place. She mirrors the influencer style on a Instagram - stories lots with the "Yaaaas" stickers, tags brands in her pictures despite only having 60/70 followers (I think may people just think that's the way youre meant to do Instagram). Anyway, her living room is Hague Blue, she has THE La Redoure rug, copper cage style pendant lights, neon sign in the lounge, etc.

It's weird because she has great style and I think anything she's done off her own back would look 100 times better than the identikit Instahome she's got now. She's happy and loves it, it just made me think that it goes beyond bags and baby grows

jamoncrumpets · 10/06/2018 14:55

My favourite Instainteriors trend was the mountains in kids rooms one a year or two back. Suddenly everybody was masking taping off these giant triangles left, right and centre. And buying 'tent' beds with fairy lights strung all over them.

And the teepees which are now all shoved in the corners of playrooms or garages gathering dust. I speak from experience on that front

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:00

The mainstream instas interiors are boring either because they've morphed from insta parents, decorated their houses once in current season style or have dodgy affiliations. The cool interiors - people who are actually stylists or photographers are always interesting and inspirational imo - a couple I've mentioned are curio margate and homeplaceonline. If someone shows me a fake pot plant or flowers from Sainsbury's or qvc I'm out.

BeautyBox · 10/06/2018 15:00

Thank god my husband drew the line at letting me stick arrow or polka dot decals all over the walls which would certainly have taken the plaster off when we tried to remove them

BeautyBox · 10/06/2018 15:02

@Wearelocal - I started following homeplaceonline after a recommendation on here or the other thread. I love their feed and have a few things in their shop on my wish list. Really beautiful!

I'll check the other one you mentioned out now

jamoncrumpets · 10/06/2018 15:02

My 3yo DS wanted a 'rainbow cupcake room' - it's like the inside of a clown's work kit. Definitely not instagrammable.

I also have a dusty teepee 🙄

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:03

And look at the modern house feed ❤️

Ha! I’m definitely guilty of owning WAY too many woven baskets thanks to IG...Blush

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:05

Beautybox > whispers < don't buy from their shop. It's far too expensive. Get yourself to a seaside town charity shop if you can. You can get all that stuff for nothing!

jamoncrumpets · 10/06/2018 15:06

I nearly bought a Birchbox because of Instagram once. Luckily I had a word with myself before entering my card details.

BeautyBox · 10/06/2018 15:07

Ok, @Wearelocal - noted! I'm mid renovation at the mo so a way away from actually buying anything (boohoo!!!) so I add things to my basket and pretend.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:10

Beautybox ha ha, me too. Kevin McCloud once said (something like) house design is not shopping. I try to keep that in mind. I like to see how stylists etc. use light, colour, tricks to improve the space, rather than shopping for stuff!

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:17

I love eatmedrinecottage which is a holiday home I think, but I just love how Enid Blyton it is. I just don't follow interiors hawking stuff. An online shop, a holiday home, a photographer advertising themselves - that's all fine. It's legitimate and clear.

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:30

Pretty sure m5slowdown was NB as she's popped back on her IG just now. I hope she feels better after her break and directs her energies to being nicer. It makes you feel better.

jamoncrumpets · 10/06/2018 15:32

I have no interest whatsoever in who or who not M5 might be. Could be someone. Could be no one. They added nothing of value to the conversation.

OP posts:
Fivelittleduckies · 10/06/2018 15:37

Who’s NB?

Wearelocal · 10/06/2018 15:39

I'm interested in someone being on the threads with an agenda. Especially if they are trying to lead posters to be critical of/lead traffic to an instagram account I.e. Mother freckle. That is trolling.
