DHs eating

endoftether82 · 29/05/2018 21:31

DH has 3 diners everyday. The first will be a proper meal, say spaghetti bolognese, he will also polish off the children's meals if there's any leftovers - often before they've even said they're finished. Second meal will be some kind of sandwich, so tonight it was turkey and avocado, other times it might be peanut butter and banana. He will then finish with a massive bowl of cereal.

Full disclosure, he does walk 6 miles a day. However, he always has a hearty canteen lunch (massive portions). I know this because he frequently instagrams his work meals. He also tells are children about them when he get home and they often involve puddings like profiteroles or crumble.

He's a perfectly healthy size. But aibu to think this is unusual behaviour. He's just had a go at me because I raised my eyebrows when he was pouring out his massive bowl of Cheerios.

Including the apple?

Apples make me hungrier than if I had esteem nothing at all.

steff13 · 30/05/2018 06:50

Eaten. Hmm

BeakyPlinder · 30/05/2018 06:52

My OH can eat and eat too and is a perfect weight. I am insanely jealous!!!

InfiniteSheldon · 30/05/2018 06:56

He is 6ft 4' and walks miles every day? I'd say he's only just eating enough. He does need to stop eating the kids food I would start dishing him up a kiddie plate they shouldn't have to deal with their dad eating their food

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/05/2018 07:00

I serve my cereal in a thimble, one rice crispy or half a cornflake, though I must change this as far too many carbs.

DuchyDuke · 30/05/2018 07:01

If he has tummy overhang then you can’t go by BMI alone. He is too fat and needs to cut down his calorie intake or up his activity. Men aren’t like women; tummy overhang nearly always means unhealthy levels of visceral fat. If his bmi is on the low side he needs to build muscle and do more cardio, if on the high, he needs to diet.

SerenDippitty · 30/05/2018 07:02

I was flamed on here a while back when I posted what I eat in a day and told I would never lose weight like that. It was a tiny fraction of what the OP’s husband eats. I actually have lost weight though.....

Rocinante1 · 30/05/2018 07:06

Not read the full thread, but 6 miles really isn't that far. Its around 12000 steps (probably less for him as he'll have a long stride).

He can get away with that right now, but as he gets older, he won't. Overeating is a massive problem in this country and he is overeating. But that's what he's used to having so to him it seems normal. He'll just need to cut down as he ages.

BlondeB83 · 30/05/2018 07:07

I’m jealous! I’d gain a stone in 3 days if I ate all that!

BlondeB83 · 30/05/2018 07:08

It will likely catch up with him in a few years.

UserX · 30/05/2018 07:08

How old is he? Under 35=crack on, over 35=he’ll regret it sooner or later. You don’t get fat overnight, it just creeps on slowly & you have to keep buying bigger trousers. Maybe he’s burning off, maybe he isn’t, my guess is you’ll find out in a year or two.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 30/05/2018 07:13

Hyperthyroidism?

mrbob · 30/05/2018 07:20

I think many threads on MN make it absolutely clear that the “calories are calories” and “just eat less and move more and you will HAVE to lose weight” brigade may not be entirely right...

GreenItWas · 30/05/2018 07:21

My advice would be to worm him before he starts dragging his arse on the carpet.

Sametimesameplace · 30/05/2018 07:22

I wouldn’t call that three meals. I don’t overeat but often have cereal or toast at bedtime. I don’t suppose it matters if he has it at different times or all in one go.

strawberrypenguin · 30/05/2018 07:26

Sounds like a lot to me but if he's healthy weight he must be burning a lot off too.

I would however put a stop to him taking the DC's food. That's not on at all and puts them under pressure while they're eating.

colditz · 30/05/2018 07:27

Seems a bit unpleasant and gluttonous though

What a mindblowingly stupid thing to say.

If he's the right weight at this intake, and he ceases this intake, he will lose weight until he is underweight. How incredibly dim do you have to be to say that maintaining a healthy bodyweight is gluttonous?

Johnnycomelately1 · 30/05/2018 07:31

I swear the MN food threads are getting more batshit by the day

Last week: You may as well eat a King Size Mars Bar as 2 bananas

This Week: Even though a person is not gaining weight at a given intake they are still overeating/ greedy.

SerenDippitty · 30/05/2018 07:34

We don’t know that he would lose weight if he ate a bit less anyway. It’s not a given, But the thing is, if he was eating this amount and he was gaining weight or failing to lose it you’d say it was gluttonous. But because he’s not it’s fine. Confused

DevonshireCreamTea · 30/05/2018 07:37

If he is a healthy weight then he obviously needs it. My DP never stops eating and snacks all day plus several big meals.

AllMYSmellySocks · 30/05/2018 07:39

If you are at a stable weight and you almost always eat less you lose weight until you reach a new, lower stable weight.

If you have a high metabolism from exercise or just genetics it is not gluttonous to eat enough to stop you feeling hungry. Being gluttonous is eating more than you need. Michael Phelps will need more than a petite woman who does no exercise.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 30/05/2018 07:40

He's eating 3 meals a day and not gaining weight? Sounds completely normal. I could definitely eat that much in a day (minus nicking dc food!) and my weight never fluctuates, have a healthy bmi.

sabinaapplecross · 30/05/2018 07:41

BMI is not a very good indicator. A better gauge involves measuring the waist circumference and the hip circumference. The rule of thumb is to have a smaller waist than hip circumference.

Also a waist circumference of less than 102 cm (40 inches) in men, or less than 88 cm (35 inches) in women is desirable for good health.

  1. Physics
  2. That literally makes no sense- how can eating to maintain a normal body weight be considered gluttonous?
Pandora79 · 30/05/2018 07:42

Jesus my OH is 6ft 4in. He eats like the Ops husband. Why is it annoying or glutinous?

Trying to eat the kids meals before they are done, is a bit shut. But the rest of it? I don't see the problem. If he isn't overweight and it's not impacting his health, where's the issue?

I would rather OH ate enough rather than be hungry, just to appear less annoying.
