DHs eating

DH has 3 diners everyday. The first will be a proper meal, say spaghetti bolognese, he will also polish off the children's meals if there's any leftovers - often before they've even said they're finished. Second meal will be some kind of sandwich, so tonight it was turkey and avocado, other times it might be peanut butter and banana. He will then finish with a massive bowl of cereal.

Full disclosure, he does walk 6 miles a day. However, he always has a hearty canteen lunch (massive portions). I know this because he frequently instagrams his work meals. He also tells are children about them when he get home and they often involve puddings like profiteroles or crumble.

He's a perfectly healthy size. But aibu to think this is unusual behaviour. He's just had a go at me because I raised my eyebrows when he was pouring out his massive bowl of Cheerios.

Sounds like my dh FASH. It's really unbelievable. We once went out for dinner and he ordered his main meal, with a burger on the side. No joke.

My boss eats like this. It's amazing how much food he can put away and not a pick on him. He is pretty tall though.

I'm just a bit jealous! Sometimes after a large meal he'll pat his non existent stomach and say look at that I'm getting a tummy 😂

DH loves a burger often two in the same bun with sides and cheese. When we signed up for our new gp I made him get his cholesterol etc checked but infuriatingly he's the picture of health, my mum says it's hollow legs (she is not a medical professional)

It is a bit much when he says pass the plate over, thinking my dd has finished, when she's actually just chewing a bit of sausage or something.

Judge it by his weight - if he isn't gaining, he's not consuming more calories than he's burning and he's fine. 6 miles of walking is a lot so he probably can eat a lot of calories.

He shouldn't be finishing your children's meals though, that's not on! Tell him to cook more and have seconds if he's still hungry after his portion.

Yes, he needs to stop that. DH doesn't eat anywhere near as much as that, but he's a chocolate fiend. Also, he kept asking for some of my bfing snacks. I don't think he realised how fucking hungry I was.

You sound like my DH. He can't get over how much food I can eat. I'm not fat but I need a lot of food. My DH eats hardly anything in my opinion.

I am often quite surprised at how much my husband can eat for an evening meal ( and also finish whatever I don’t want) - it would make me feel very uncomfortable to eat that much late. But he doesn’t have much in the way of lunch, never has any kind of snack and is very fit and trim with good cholesterol and blood pressure etc so it seems to work for him.

He probably just has a fast metabolism! I eat an awful lot as well because I’m genuinely always hungry but I’m not over weight. I just have a fast metabolism

You should certainly call a halt to him taking food from the children, that is not only greedy but also very poor parenting.

Having an overhang is not a healthy weight. I would be very concerned that as he gets older, his weight is going to go through the roof very quickly.

DP is ex-military and still works out 8-10 times per week. He is an absolute unit of muscle and eats like a horse. Seriously. It is amazing how much absolute shit he can shovel down and still look like an Adonis, whereas I also am really active but so much as look at a profiterole and have gained half a stone

He needs to stop taking the DC's food. Also, can the family budget afford him eating more than everyone else?
I get that some people need more food than others (any big person who undertakes a lot of physical activity is likely to want a lot of food) but if one person is eating so much that other family members are going without, then that person needs to be less greedy - they won't die from having a bit less food than they want.

This is only an example but could be a reason..
pastas, bread etc contains simple carbs that cause insulin spikes - meaning you are still hungry after eating.

So in the example you gave, your husband had spaghetti (simple carbs, refined grains). A sandwich (simple carbs, refined grains) and Cheerios (simples carbs, refined grains.) Non of the foods actually satisfy your appetite and you are generally hungry again soon after. Same with pizza, white potatoes etc. If you want your husband to feel full after just dinner, you need to look at the meals you are eating and swap them out for low GI foods.

A breakfast of porridge is good, add berries, bananas etc.
The bagel and apple will just make him hungry again soon after.

Also - the 6 mile walk would burn a lot of calories which requires extra food to maintain his weight and energy level. Simple calorie in - calorie out. Just make sure the calories in are healthy calories and not empty calories.
