to expect family not to be ridiculed at my daughters birthday party?

Had a small 1st birthday party in the house on Sunday for my daughter, invited close family and friends. I was quite busy in the kitchen cooking buffet food ect so wasn't always in the thick of things.

Anyway, went and sat down on the couch with my sil and noticed a lot of giggling between her and mil/fil. As it turns out, sil has been having a right fucking laugh at my uncles choice of footwear (sandals, who even cares) and has been snapping photos of him on the sly and having a laugh about it (she showed me the photos, I didn't laugh but let it go at the time).

Am I unreasonable to be annoyed at this? My uncle left early before the cake cutting with an excuse and I can't help but feeling he knew he was being ridiculed! Terrible behaviour, I don't even think there's a point in bringing this up at all to my in laws because they'll just brush it off!

That's not nice. Would they laugh it off if you told them your uncle knew he was the butt of their joke?
If you're not prepared to confront them, do make a point of laughing at their fashion fails at every opportunity. Lets see how they like it.

Hmmisthatit · 29/05/2018 20:10

How horrible. I would phone him and apologise for their nasty, petty, ridiculous behaviour. my DF rocks a sock and a sandal

motheroreily · 29/05/2018 20:14

That would really upset me. I hate people being ridiculed.
Over a pair of sandals? So what? Who cares? For a stranger to act like that is cruel. But a member of the extended family is awful

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/05/2018 20:16

Poor fella. Hope he didn't hear them.

Flutterbyeee · 29/05/2018 20:17

That would upset me too. You do not need to apologise.

Queenoftheblitz · 29/05/2018 20:19

Your sil was presumptuous to show you the photos - does she think you're as shallow as her and would laugh along.
I would send her a short text saying how disappointed you are at her making your uncle feel so uncomfortable in your home.
I'm a great believer in stamping out this kind of crap.

willothewisp17 · 29/05/2018 20:19

It wasn't even a fashion choice, he was wearing sandals because he's recently had some toenails removed and is in agony waiting for an appointment for more to be removed! Obviously they didn't know this, but it still doesn't make it any better!

I don't go to any of my husbands family parties and make a fool out of people and take sneaky pictures of them! It's shameful!

Also, my daughter put her hand in her cake and got icing all over her hand and as I was reaching for a wipe, sil proceeded to say 'don't bother' and then licked my daughters hand clean in the one motion Envy with a mouth full of barbecue flavoured crisps.

Horrible person. You are the host and your home should be a safe place, she has violated that.

Theweasleytwins · 29/05/2018 20:22

That's quite mean! I had an ingrown toenail removed and could only wear flip flops

I thought you were going to say he was wearing socks and sandals and even then only a brief chuckle would be okay not extended making fun of

Flutterbyeee · 29/05/2018 20:23

With barbeque flavoured crisps??!! Report her.

Queenoftheblitz · 29/05/2018 20:25

I think sil was drunk - thats no excuse though.

willothewisp17 · 29/05/2018 20:26

@Flutterbyeee the barbecue crisps is actually really irrelevant sorry! my daughter was born 10 weeks prem and had difficulties with her lungs and eventually came home from hospital on oxygen, and all my family know that I'm a little obsessive about germs, so for sil to lick her full hand made me very uncomfortable!

stopbeingadramallama · 29/05/2018 20:26

She sounds like a right classy bird.

willothewisp17 · 29/05/2018 20:27

She kept looking at the photo and laughing saying 'what are thooose!'

I should have just replied their fucking sandals you tit!

Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 20:27

Take snaps of their faces and share it around laughing, wait until they ask to see what's so funny...

UrsulaPandress · 29/05/2018 20:28

Grim.

stopbeingadramallama · 29/05/2018 20:29

Wait until she's wearing a scabby arse top and do the same. Make it obvious and then tell her to stop being cuntish in the future.

PorkyPortia · 29/05/2018 20:30

Your SIL needs to grow up
It was your daughters 1 st birthday , something very special and she can’t behave for that
I wouldn’t embarrass your uncle by bringing it up with him , it’s hurtful
I would bloody have words for her though

willothewisp17 · 29/05/2018 20:34

I know exactly the response if I did have words! I'd be told to chill out, it's just a joke! My husband doesn't seem to see a problem at all! It's like he can't believe I have the audacity to even be bothered about it!

Glassofredandapackofcrisps · 29/05/2018 20:34

Your sil is a vile bitch! Licking your one year olds hand? Oh god I'd have killed the skanky cow!

AllMYSmellySocks · 29/05/2018 20:36

YANBU, how horrible for your uncle if he heard and how insensitive to come and try to involve you in mocking your uncle. Honestly I'd think it was immature behaviour from a 15 year old let alone a group of adults.

Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 20:36

I don't get the issue with licking a 1 year old's hand, but hey ho.

Hygge · 29/05/2018 20:39

What was your DH doing while his family were being so shitty?

What has he said about it? And what is he going to do about it?

willothewisp17 · 29/05/2018 20:39

@Delphiniumum the issue is my daughter was 10 weeks premature and they know that she's susceptible to catching bugs ect, and could quite easily land back in hospital! as she has done before from catching what was a simple cold, didn't explain properly sorry.

notacooldad · 29/05/2018 20:41

How bloody rude and nasty.
You really should have said something there and then.
Poor chap!
