Moved into our house about 6 months ago.

Today dh was working in the loft and he found some kind of old porn magazine called Sun Lovers, looks like it could be from the 70s, tucked away under the insulation with an ancient Christmas tree fairy.

Pretty gross and went straight in the bin, it must have been up there years and years, before the previous owners.

What strange things have you found in your house when you've moved in?

In our current house we found a big box of marbles along with a few metal balls of varying sizes, some being more than a couple of inches in diameter. Not sure what they are.

In the first house we rented, dh found a couple of preserved large spiders and a scorpion and an old chamber pot. These have travelled far and wide with us. 🙄

Newspaper from the 1980’s to keep the tops of the cupboards clean. This was only a few years ago. 🤢

DS bought a house three years ago, a very ordinary suburban semi (until he rebuilt it into something stunning . . .) and found a bottle of champagne from 1927, the year it was built, and a letter from the last owners explaining that it had been bought by the first owners on the day they completed their purchase and been passed from owner to owner since then and they hoped he would pass it on one day to the next owner. He's not usually sentimental about things (he is about children) but he has kept it carefully and will indeed pass it on.

And I once acted for people buying a house who found in the kitchen a folding card table with

an old but clean and serviceable electric kettle
some mugs and spoons and plates
a jar of coffee and a box of tea bags
a pack of biscuits
and a welcoming note listing some useful local shops and services.

A collection of knitted toys under the floorboards of a room which, after some hard work, showed nursery patterns on one of the layers of wallpaper.

After a cow of a job shifting wood chip wallpaper we found a partial name and address with money owed in £.s.d. in neat copperplate style writing.

Possibly one of the Victorian foremen keeping tally or one of the workmen airing a grievance.

Off topic, but somebody smashed my window last week by throwing a metal ball like this. I have no idea what they are either and if anybody does, I'd love to know!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 28/05/2018 14:14

Minnie why didn’t you give the photos back to the previous owner? Someone out there may be really missing those photos.

I thought the same. Unless there is a good reason.

IJustHadToNameChange · 28/05/2018 14:15

Bearings.

Metal balls are bearings which can vary in size depending on the piece of machinery they were used for.

That ticking noise as a bicycle whizzes past you? The ball bearings in the wheel knocking against each other as they complete a circuit round the wheel.

Walkingthroughawall · 28/05/2018 14:15

My parents found a dildo carved out of stone under the floorboards in the 18th century house they used to own. Goodness knows how long it's been there!

Solo · 28/05/2018 14:19

Ball bearings? They come in many sizes, I think.

I forgot that I also found some 1930's comics in my first house's loft. Beano I think. My dog got hold of them :(

QuackPorridgeBacon · 28/05/2018 14:19

Walkingthroughawall “Dildo carved out of stone” 😂

AtrocityNeedles · 28/05/2018 14:19

I accidentally opened an envelope addressed to the previous tenant. It was an ad for dogging. I had to then go and buy a new mattress Envy

SexyManatee · 28/05/2018 14:21

Ah I didn't know ball bearings came in different sizes. Just assumed they were all small, like in a bb gun.

The one that smashed my window was a little smaller than a golf ball.

mrjoepike · 28/05/2018 14:27

what solo said
along with marbles would say they are"shooters"
used as main "marble "to hit others out of play
if not actually ball bearings but true steelys they are worth $,as are alot of old marbles/detailed explanation of marbles here

We found a secret room a few years after we moved into a house. There was small closet in one room, which we eventually discovered had a false back. We took the back of the closet down and found another room. In the room were lots of possessions from the 1920s - birthday cards, jewelry, beauty products etc.. We don't know why the room had been hidden.

Loonoon · 28/05/2018 14:38

We found a little gold kangaroo lapel pin stuck into the wall in a hidden corner near the boiler. I kept it there even after we redecorated and left it there when we moved on 18 years later. I wonder if it is still there?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/05/2018 14:42

Graffiti in the attic-nothing sinister, very teenage. "Ban the bom"(sic) and cnd signs. Later. Turns out the woman that did it as a girl I later became friends with.

Petalflowers · 28/05/2018 14:42

In our loft there were bags of childhood toys and a bridesmaid dress. The couple who owned the house had split acrimoniously and she had fled abroad. I hate to think I was chucking out cherished childhood toys of her.

They also left furniture, beds, fruit bowl etc. We still have the table and chairs.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/05/2018 14:43

Sexymanatee are you in Wales ? Ball bearings featured large in our marble collections as children. They were called “bolshies” and had a different value to marbles, one large bolshie could be swapped for two of those big special marbles with multi coloured centres.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/05/2018 14:48

A secret room ! How amazing.
So sad about the little baby. I imagine an illegitimate birth is more likely than a human sacrifice.
To whoever found the clog/boot, this is very common, sometimes they were buried under floorboards to ensure that someone came home again from sea or war. Or they are supposed to generally protect against bad luck. Usually only one is found, not pairs.

SexyManatee · 28/05/2018 14:52

No Vix, in London. Interesting though!

Sparkletastic · 28/05/2018 15:08

Loving the hidden room from the 1920s Star

Know also of a body found in a garden.
Years befoe Poland joined The EU there was a group of illegal polish men living in a house. One night one if them died from natural causes. The others panicked as any authorities arriving would spell deportation. So they buried him out back. Years later the original residents had moved on in the transient way some communities move through London.
A new family bought the house and began renovating the garden discovering the body.

minniemoll · 28/05/2018 15:21

Minnie why didn’t you give the photos back to the previous owner? Someone out there may be really missing those photos.

He'd left them behind when he'd divorced her years before and not bothered to retrieve them, she'd sealed them up in the pantry. They clearly didn't want them.

Plus it was about a year before I found them, and several more years before I looked at them properly, and I didn't have her contact details anyway even if I had wanted to return them. Which I have to say never even crossed my mind.

velvetcandy · 28/05/2018 15:29

Whe i was a kid probably about 8 i found a large key the size of a chopstick and single bullet in my back garden. We took them to the police station. My parents found gas masks and ration books in the loft.

Lilacwine1 · 28/05/2018 15:57

We were moving out of our old house, and getting some items out of the attic to pack, when my DS shouted down to me that he had found something. I climbed into the attic and he was standing there with a little wooden box, inside was a tiny skeleton, about 6inches long, the head was human, but the hands and feet were like claws, and there were some really old sepia coloured photo's, in them was a man and woman holding what looked like an extremely tiny little girl, and her hands and feet really were clawlike. He said he found it behind a loose brick, which was partially pushed out. I felt goosebumps on my arms. We couldn't get out of there fast enough, once we were downstairs we couldn't stop laughing, at how quickly we got out of there.
