To really dislike hearing young children say “cheers”

I have had this debate with OH. He used to teach our dc (19mths and 3) to say it with drinks until I said I really didn’t like it.
Friends and relatives have also said it to dc(2) and I’ve sat with gritted teeth. He is particularly inpressionable at this age and will pick up a word and say it at any opportunity.

My DD who is 3 loves doing this. It makes her feel very grown up at the dinner table!

I really don't see the problem Hmm

HoppingPavlova · 28/05/2018 10:30

I’m all sorts of wrong.

I use ‘cheers’ in all sorts of situations as shorthand for ‘thanks for that’.

On special occasions we also clink glasses and do cheers. The glasses usually contain soft drink or exotic juice, reserved for special occasions in our house (water being the everyday drink).

I also call my DS ‘mate’.

The horror, the horror. I don’t understand how I have made it this far in life tbh and without a penis!

MorrisZapp · 28/05/2018 10:35

Lol, don't ever come to Edinburgh. We say cheers all the time. With two syllables.

Emma198 · 28/05/2018 10:38

My niece says 'chin-chin!' Is that more civilised for you? Confused

DashingRed · 28/05/2018 10:39

Haha we do this! Mine has even dipped his finger into a pint - which he loved btw!

But yes, I agree that saying 'cheers' rather than 'thank you' doesn't sound great, especially when they're small.

BustopherJones · 28/05/2018 11:12

Whatever you do, don’t let them watch Go Jetters... mine is currently shouting about her favourite character: ‘Grandma’s a dick!’

moreofaslummythanyummy · 28/05/2018 11:20

We actually say 'Cheers, Big Ears' which I suspect is even less ladylike.

We do too 😂

Wondermoomin · 28/05/2018 12:18

Gertrude when you say you don't really hear women saying cheers... is it because you don't really get invited to parties and social occasions all that much? You sound like you'd be fun at those Hmm

Blaablaablaa · 28/05/2018 12:22

What I'm taking from this post is I'm failing a being a woman and I'm lacking in manners.... I'm just waiting for the uneducated card to be played 🙄

MrsMollyMooMoo · 28/05/2018 12:30

I say Ta sometimes. Why is it so wrong?

zwellers · 28/05/2018 13:48

I routinely finish calls at work with cheers. The only time I make an effort not to is when it ryhmes with persons name.

NorthernKnickers · 28/05/2018 22:49

@zwellers I'm now madly trying to think of names that rhyme with 'cheers'...the only one I've come up with is 'Piers' 😳

TurquoiseDress · 28/05/2018 23:01

Our LO is 4 and has done this since about 18 months, mainly when meeting up with family & enjoying a meal all together etc

I had no issues with this at all, our LO just wanted to join in with us all making a toast

beargryllshasabigrope · 28/05/2018 23:09

😭😭😭

TheHulksPurplePanties · 29/05/2018 17:04

I'm just waiting for the uneducated card to be played 🙄

Just started my PhD in Mass Communication. Cheers is my routine sign off on emails. If anyone is uneducated, it's not us.

Blaablaablaa · 29/05/2018 17:10

@thehulks indeed! It's a regular email sign off in my department of PhD educated academics......but apparently we have no manners! 😂

mossyroundhill · 29/05/2018 17:12

DD does this if we have something matching. So for example, if we both have our hair up we have to donk heads together and “cheers” it.

mellongoose · 29/05/2018 18:56

I say 'ta'. I'm 42. I also say 'thank you' and lots of other words that mean the same thing. My vocabulary is rather extensive.

mellongoose · 29/05/2018 18:59

My 3yo says 'cheers' (when toasting her shots) 'thank you', 'ta' and 'please'. My grandma also said 'ta'....she was in her 90s when she died.

I genuinely don't understand the need to pigeon hole such harmless expressions Confused

theveryhighlife · 29/05/2018 19:09

I only think of positive things in regards to 'cheers'
It usually means you're in good company and enjoying time with others. I can't think of anything negative about 'cheers'. Plus it's understood in many other cultures as something positive too.

Laniakea · 29/05/2018 19:19

Iechyd da here!

(my grandmother has us saying it as soon as we could sit up at the table)

Laniakea · 29/05/2018 19:21

she would not have been happy to hear us say "ta" though

hibbledibble · 29/05/2018 19:26

My children cheers their juice or other drink, and clink their glassed. I think it's cute! Op seems to be getting wound up about nothing.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 30/05/2018 18:08

I sign off on some emails/texts with “Laters”

I’m obviously a down wiv the posse heathen

LiteraryDevil1 · 30/05/2018 18:38
