To really dislike hearing young children say “cheers”

I have had this debate with OH. He used to teach our dc (19mths and 3) to say it with drinks until I said I really didn’t like it.
Friends and relatives have also said it to dc(2) and I’ve sat with gritted teeth. He is particularly inpressionable at this age and will pick up a word and say it at any opportunity.

My mother is Mormon.

She says "cheers" to her church friends. I think it's hilarious.

ipswichwitch · 28/05/2018 08:40

Ds1 used to say “Cheeeessseee” and then swing his cup violently at yours in a true Viking quaffing style

We have a mini Viking too. However he likes to do his cheers with anything from cups of milk to cupcakes. You can splatter a fair bit of buttercream with an enthusiastic “cheers”. He’s now progressed to “bon appetit!” - I’m so proud!

sarcasmisnotthelowestformofwit · 28/05/2018 08:45

Please unclench OP. There are far bigger things to get worried about.

FFS!!

FancyADoughnut · 28/05/2018 08:50

I was having a bad morning but this has cheered me up no end.

Cheers Brew (ps I am female so do I need explicit permission to say the word)

LavenderDoll · 28/05/2018 08:50

OP it is sexist to say its not a word a woman uses. Last time I checked we women can use all the words men use
And YABU and very odd ....

Cheers Lavender

MadgeMidgerson · 28/05/2018 08:51

My children when tiny misheard Cheers, mate as ‘cheers Mike’ 😂

mummabeargrr · 28/05/2018 09:00

Personally I only say 'Cheers' if my DH has said it first, given the nod of ascension that I may too 'Cheers' because heaven for fend that I should do it off my own volition or in an improper moment. He then nods when the children may file in to give us an insight into their daily doings, before being marched off to bed in a formal orderly manner.

BreadOfJesus · 28/05/2018 09:02

I agree with you OP. I used to hate people teaching my kids to say "ta" as babies. It just sounds common.

Gertrudethecow · 28/05/2018 09:23

I wish you could create a poll on MN. I wonder how many of yhe pro-cheers camp (the majority) also don’t mind their children being taught Ta.
I am not actually quite as anti-Ta as I am anti-Cheers. I don’t like it actively taught to young children but understand that it is easier to say than thankyou. I also don’t know any adults or older children that say Ta so the conversion to thankyou can be learnt once the manner is in place.
For those of you offended by my comment about not hearing many women say cheers, I apologise. I didn’t say that there is anything wrong with it but that is my experience.

I was just wondering where the OP stands on 'ta' Wink

TheHulksPurplePanties · 28/05/2018 09:29

As for using it instead of thankyou, I think that’s even worse... On a par with calling your child toddler “mate”.
As for using it to say thank you, I am used to the guys at work saying it but don’t really think of it as a word women use.

Fucking Christ. I use it to sign off the vast majority of my work emails! Thank goodness I don't work with you!

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 28/05/2018 09:30

I taught her to say ‘cheers big ears’

The standard reply to “cheers Big Ears” in my family by the adults is “Fuck off, Noddy” Grin

Gertrudethecow · 28/05/2018 09:32

@TheHulksPurplePanties I take it you’re an adult? It is an adult word and I don’t find it remotely endearing for a young child to say.

OP posts:
Dobbythesockelf · 28/05/2018 09:36

I know some pretty good adult words fuck, shit, bollocks, cockwomble etc. But I have never heard anyone say that cheers or mate are adult words. Do you have to be over 18 to use them?

TheHulksPurplePanties · 28/05/2018 09:38

@TheHulksPurplePanties I take it you’re an adult?

Depends on my mood Grin.

Where I'm from in Canada it's an alternative for thank you. Yes, it's occasionally said during a toast (as toasts are generally thank you's), but Slainte is the more common drinks toast.

LastOneDancing · 28/05/2018 09:50

Along with my cheersing, I also use matey for my child and call my friends love Grin

It gets worse - I also had a Nan.

I am the type to be avoided at all costs.

Oysterbabe · 28/05/2018 10:01

That's a shame, little ones love doing cheers. I'm not a fan of ta, I don't think it's the same thing. I don't say ta myself and my toddler is capable of saying thank you.

TheFirstMrsDV · 28/05/2018 10:04

This long weekend has confused me a bit time-wise but feeling like I have woken up in 1952 is a bit extreme.

Steeley113 · 28/05/2018 10:06

Nothing like hearing you’re thought of as a lower class citizen on a bank holiday Monday Grin we teach cheers (in both contexts) and ta! Also call my dc ‘my little mates’ and say such awful things as ‘come on matey’. Also say love and duck a lot Blush I’ll go sit in the corner Wine

Snowysky20009 · 28/05/2018 10:07

I'm in wales, so firstly 'cheers drive' is the normal way of thanking a bus driver as you get off a bus

Secondly, cheers is a form of thanks- 'cheers for that'

Thirdly, cheers is a common toast

I didn't understand the issue with it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

insancerre · 28/05/2018 10:08

As a child the phrase we used was down the batch
Don't tend to hear it much these days

insancerre · 28/05/2018 10:09

Hatch!
Not batch

FellOutOfBed2wice · 28/05/2018 10:12

Me and DH often laugh about this when we leave London, as we say “cheers” for “thank you” a lot, it’s a colloquialism in definitely East and South London where we grew up, maybe all of London. But the rest of the country don’t seem to use it. I like it, it’s friendly.

I also call my infant daughters “mate”. I like that too!

Blaablaablaa · 28/05/2018 10:20

Ooopps I didn't realise saying 'ta' meant I hadn't learnt manners.

I definitely signed of emails with 'ta' and 'cheers' how uncivilised of me.
