To really dislike hearing young children say “cheers”

I have had this debate with OH. He used to teach our dc (19mths and 3) to say it with drinks until I said I really didn’t like it.
Friends and relatives have also said it to dc(2) and I’ve sat with gritted teeth. He is particularly inpressionable at this age and will pick up a word and say it at any opportunity.

You don't think of cheers as a word women use??

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 22:23

I don’t want mine to say it.
Doesn't your OH get a say in it then, presumably they are his as well and he obviously doesn't mind.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 22:23

I’m imaging you with a pomander and face all askance at modern colloquialisms

gamerwidow · 27/05/2018 22:25

We actually say 'Cheers, Big Ears' which I suspect is even less ladylike.

Carycach100 · 27/05/2018 22:25

ooookkkaaaayyy

aaarrrggghhhh · 27/05/2018 22:26

I am used to the guys at work saying it but don’t really think of it as a word women use.

Literally speechless.

You should pop over to the feminist boards and give your input into the discussions on what defines a woman. Would go down a storm.

Cheers

Aaarrgghhh

LastOneDancing · 27/05/2018 22:26

I'm non gender confirming with my cheers.

My 2yo is amazingly cute with his Grin

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 27/05/2018 22:27

Wow if that's all you've got to be worried about 🙄 and yes YABU

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 22:27

There are men words and women words? Shit!! I've been teaching my dd like they were all just words. I didn't realise I was so progressive and gender neutral.

Glumglowworm · 27/05/2018 22:29

Honestly you need to get a grip

It’s a very innocuous and inoffensive thing. Thank you for reminding me how much my sister and I enjoyed doing cheers at Sunday lunch, sat round the dinner table. We’ve both made it to our 30s without being raging alcoholics but I suppose there’s still time yet.

Wait til your PFB hears a swear word and repeats it endlessly in public Grin

SalemBlackCat · 27/05/2018 22:30

Why do people automatically associate cheers with drinking? I associate it with being happy, with being friendly, with school sporting houses and kids reciting sporting house cheers/songs. Cheering someone on in a race. Also, cheerleaders.

I don't understand. Why do you think the word relates to alcohol only?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 22:31

It’s a legitimate association not a wild loose association.cheer is a toast

MumofBoysx2 · 27/05/2018 22:31

Yes, you are.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 27/05/2018 22:32

I love it when anyone says "Cheers". It reminds me of Ted, Diane and Frasier...

cordeliavorkosigan · 27/05/2018 22:34

i'd really laugh, though, if the toddler said "fuck me i've heard it all now" like Blaablaa did Grin

Blaablaablaa · 27/05/2018 22:36

😂😂😂 I'm sure it's only a matter of time before mine does

Tiredtomybones · 27/05/2018 22:37

My dc say it in German. They love it and so do I. They are bilingual but only every use German for cheers and bless you (after a sneeze) when out in public.

Sandsnake · 27/05/2018 22:37

Yeah YABU

unyummy4amummy · 27/05/2018 22:37

Can't see what the big deal is but each to their own.

I have encouraged both my DC to cheers from an early age as it helps them be involved and always makes me smile. They now enjoy it so much they cheers with drinks, ice creams, biscuits, lollies and even sausages!

FatherMacKenzie · 27/05/2018 22:38

Oh come the fuck on. This has to be a wind up.

AlfredDaButtler · 27/05/2018 22:38

Cheers in the context of a meal/drinks is pretty alcohol based. When was the last time you saw anyone saying cheers and clinking their lattes in Costa?

It’s really not the same as “three cheers for the birthday boy!”, or cheering on your football team.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 27/05/2018 22:39

Get a grip OP Biscuit

walkswithmydog · 27/05/2018 22:39

Yanbu, a child should say "thank you"....leave "cheers" for the adults.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 22:40

Well so long as the bairns arent chugging some maddug when they say cheers can’t see the problem

Etymology23 · 27/05/2018 22:40

I have definitely been known to do a toast with tea! I was tee-total on and off for years so we often used to meet up for tea and cake instead. Or cheers with water if I was having friends for dinner.

It’s a celebration of time together, of happiness and laughter, of friendship and family. It may not be that to you, and it’s your prerogative but I really cannot see what harm it can do.

(And I’m a woman and say Cheers for thank you, and also “Cheerio” for good bye.)
