To really dislike hearing young children say “cheers”

I have had this debate with OH. He used to teach our dc (19mths and 3) to say it with drinks until I said I really didn’t like it.
Friends and relatives have also said it to dc(2) and I’ve sat with gritted teeth. He is particularly inpressionable at this age and will pick up a word and say it at any opportunity.

Yanbu. Young lives are being ruined by this all the time. Small toddlers descending into alcoholics after they clink glasses of apple juice for the first time.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2018 23:42

Mine can say it in three languages.

Does that make it posh or three times as dreadful?

firehousedog · 27/05/2018 23:45

Not the end of the world but i do automatically associate cheers as being in a pub so yeah to some it may seem not right, but not the end of the world as i say.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/05/2018 23:46

Terry so can mine Grin our children are dooooooomed

shakeyourcaboose · 27/05/2018 23:51

I hope my fellow doooomers are doing it Inna corporal Fraser Dad's Army voice!

MrsRyanGosling15 · 27/05/2018 23:52

Op please please please get this moved to the feminist board. I would gladly appreciate the entertainment!

Genuinely, you can not be a real person. I refuse to believe that anyone would a) think like that and b) actually think normal sane people would agree.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/05/2018 23:53

Of course caboose Grin

shakeyourcaboose · 27/05/2018 23:54

And hello learning experience- we have from family nationalities- Gesondheid, saluti and slainte! What do the rest of you have?

shakeyourcaboose · 27/05/2018 23:56

@NeverTwerkNaked have you ever been told the story of the old empty barn...m

NeverTwerkNaked · 28/05/2018 00:04

Skål, Nazdrovye, and Santé (when with family / friends from those countries!) ...

BrandNewton · 28/05/2018 00:05

We say "up ya bum!" I think you'd need the smelling salts if your ds said that Grin

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/05/2018 00:12

We frequently say down the hatch instead of cheers although this is usually when -knocking back- sipping sambuca

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/05/2018 00:12

strike through fail Grin

KeepServingTheDrinks · 28/05/2018 01:12

OP is right.

The rest of you are negligent alcoholics parents. There needs to be an appropriate toast for each drink. Unfortunately, I don't know them. Maybe more appropriate posters will be along soon and can suggest the right toasts for each of the following:

Water clinking with water
Water clinking with wine
Wine clinking with wine
Prosecco
Milk clinking with water
Milk clinking with milk
Too drunk to carry on with this charade.....

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/05/2018 02:13

NeverTwerkNaked we have; cin cin (chin chin, Italian), or salute, santé (French) and various disgusting ones that are Scottish or English.

Since most of them mean 'health' or 'happiness' I don't really see what the issue is for the OP.

Slapdasherie · 28/05/2018 02:33

DC loves a cheers big ears, 'that's how it goes big nose' answer here!

Where I'm from the traditional response to Cheers, Big Ears is Same goes, Big Nose.

LeeValley2 · 28/05/2018 06:00

I never say cheers, it’s awful. The type of person who says cheers usually calls men mate and women love.

YouAreNotImportant · 28/05/2018 06:11

Cheers isn't suitable for children or women?

Whenever you think you've seen the most FFS threads on MN there's another one..

Blaablaablaa · 28/05/2018 07:53

@leevalley sweeping generalisation much? I say cheers to mean thank you but have never called anyone mate or love ( it either gender)

I'm assuming everyone who objects to the word cheers speaks with perfect RP English and uses no slang or local colloquialisms....

BustopherJones · 28/05/2018 07:57

I once said cheers and sprouted a moustache instantly.

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 08:03

We say Iechyd Da round here!

SamHeughansLeftEyebrow · 28/05/2018 08:30

Cheers was DS1's first word.

I use it all the time to say thanks to people. Didn't know that my XX status was meant to prevent me being able to say cheers.

SadieHH · 28/05/2018 08:32

We can't say cheers m'dears anymore? Sad. We're all girls. I guess DH could say it, having a penis and all that...
