To really dislike hearing young children say “cheers”

I have had this debate with OH. He used to teach our dc (19mths and 3) to say it with drinks until I said I really didn’t like it.
Friends and relatives have also said it to dc(2) and I’ve sat with gritted teeth. He is particularly inpressionable at this age and will pick up a word and say it at any opportunity.

OP posts:

DwangelaForever · 27/05/2018 22:44

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 22:45

When was the last time you saw anyone saying cheers and clinking their lattes in Costa?

Well not in Costa but at an awards breakfast in work we have been known to clink our plastic cups of orange juice and say cheers

dementedpixie · 27/05/2018 22:45

We do 'cheers big ears followed by 'ta big bra' 😂😂. Kids clink their glasses of juice with ours. Normally happens at Christmas and New year so dh and i will have alcohol in ours

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 22:46

Funnier still,is op is at odds with her dp,family & friends who all say cheers

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 27/05/2018 22:47

You're right, it's a gateway expression. My 18 year old has progressed from Cheers Big Ears to Merci Buckets to Danke ya Wanker. You are doing the right thing by stamping it out now.

GabsAlot · 27/05/2018 22:49

dont come to our town op cheers is used al over the place and f every other word!

pilates · 27/05/2018 22:50

Yep YABU and a bit uptight

BewareOfDragons · 27/05/2018 22:51

Hilarious.

OP, your oldest is only a toddler. A toddler! You have no idea. None.

This is not the hill to die on....

Eolian · 27/05/2018 22:52

Confused Lots of women say cheers to mean thanks. Also - if I were at an event where there was a toast and I wasn't drinking alcohol, of course I'd toast with water, lemonade etc. Why on earth should it have to be alcohol (even if it usually is)?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 22:55

Danke ya Wanker Grin

This is most definitely my new toast.

Bearhunter09 · 27/05/2018 22:58

Op I have to agree with you here surely everyone can see by teaching a toddler to clink glasses and say cheers they will be ordering their own pint at the bar by 5 and a raging alcoholic by 8. Please also stop them asking for a glass of coke it will only be so long before the brown liquid is replaced with the white powder! It’s all the thin end of a wedge

TheLionRoars1110 · 27/05/2018 23:00

Ey?? Yabu - what utter tripe!

twattymctwatterson · 27/05/2018 23:04

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 27/05/2018 23:04

shakeyourcaboose · 27/05/2018 23:09

DC loves a cheers big ears, 'that's how it goes big nose' answer here! @mothertothelordofmisrule my DC is following the Viking route and @lipstickhandbagcoffee as long as it's not the Buckie!

CoughLaughFart · 27/05/2018 23:12

Get a grip.

siwel123 · 27/05/2018 23:12

Get a grip.
It's your husbands child as well as yours.
It's a nice phrase and I would rather my kids say that then not have any manners.

BustopherJones · 27/05/2018 23:12

I call 2 yr old DD mate all the time. I often greet her ‘ahoy shipmate’. She’s doomed.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 23:15
