To really dislike hearing young children say “cheers”

I have had this debate with OH. He used to teach our dc (19mths and 3) to say it with drinks until I said I really didn’t like it.
Friends and relatives have also said it to dc(2) and I’ve sat with gritted teeth. He is particularly inpressionable at this age and will pick up a word and say it at any opportunity.

Goodness me, what a thing to be bothered about! Do you not toast outside of a bar/pub then OP? Ever? Weird! 🙄

DiddimusStench · 27/05/2018 22:07

Oh phew. My kids aren’t from ‘the nursery’ so I must be ok then.

Hmm
JanetJacket77 · 27/05/2018 22:07

Its the culture. Booze culture.

KindergartenKop · 27/05/2018 22:08

I prefer cheers to 'ta'

PortiaCastis · 27/05/2018 22:09

Eh ? What on earth is wrong with that!

KindergartenKop · 27/05/2018 22:09

Cheers means thanks doesn't it? As in 'Cheers drive' (thank you bus driver).

PortiaCastis · 27/05/2018 22:11

Yea thats right my bird

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 22:11

My dd loves saying cheers and clinking glasses. I often say cheers instead of thanks when getting of the bus etc. I hope your kid never meets my kid.

Xmasbaby11 · 27/05/2018 22:11

Yabu. It's normal language and kids love it! My 4 and 6yo do it with their milk.

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/05/2018 22:12

I use the word to toast, say thank you AND say goodbye Shock

I think toddlers cheersing drinks is cute.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 27/05/2018 22:14

DS likes to say cheers and then shout chink when bashing his sandwich into mine. Thankfully not in public yet.

gamerwidow · 27/05/2018 22:15

You'd hate it here DD has always loved a toast and we've been known to go on for a good 30 minutes when she's on a role Grin

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 22:15

Cheers to me is
A toast
An acknowledgment for something done,Thank you
Good bye also Cheerie

And I like it all those ways

Blaablaablaa · 27/05/2018 22:16

Haha what's wrong with 'mate'?? I call DS buddy but DH calls him mate or matey - it's a Manchester thing.

Cheers is just a toast - I don't thing you're kids are going to start knocking back the shots.... well, ours haven't yet.

Your poor kids...what else aren't thru allowed to say??

mimibunz · 27/05/2018 22:16

Are you middle class, OP? Wink

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 27/05/2018 22:17

Ds1 used to say “Cheeeessseee” and then swing his cup violently at yours in a true Viking quaffing style.

We eventually learned to temper his enthusiasm (and kinetic energy) by moving our glasses back so he still got the clinking experience, but we didn’t get soaked.😁

confusedorrepressed · 27/05/2018 22:18

My 6 year old says slainte. I have no idea where he learnt it Grin but I did teach him to say cheers. i don't drink and never have but I still say it l. didn't think there was anything wrong with it.

Blaablaablaa · 27/05/2018 22:18

Oh and cheers is thank you too.....but I'm guessing you aren't northern 😂

GabsAlot · 27/05/2018 22:19

yes gertrude youre right--time they get to their teens they'll be on crack because they used to say cheers

spiderlight · 27/05/2018 22:19

When my DS was tiny he used to hold up his cup and ask 'Cheers glasses with you?' to get people to clink their glasses against it. He loved it.

Gertrudethecow · 27/05/2018 22:19

I have nothing against other people teaching their own children to say it but I don’t want mine to say it.
A toast is very different to being taught to say cheers because they happen to be in the same room with a beaker of water whilst the other person sits drinking a cup of tea.
As for using it to say thank you, I am used to the guys at work saying it but don’t really think of it as a word women use. That isn’t me being sexist, I just haven’t! When dc2 gets older, it would be absolutely normal for him to say cheers. As a toddler I think it sounds far too adult.

Cheers drive is the standard thank you to bus drivers where I live.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2018 22:21

Well,Maybe I’m a special woman, all free and easy with my cheers

Wondermoomin · 27/05/2018 22:22

*That isn't me being sexist

I beg to differ. You clearly ARE being sexist if you think "it isn't a word that women use" Confused

Blaablaablaa · 27/05/2018 22:22

Cheers isn't a word women use??? Fuck me I've heard it all now. It is where I'm from.
