Repeal the 8th. You may not have a vote today but if you are willing, could you show support for the yes vote for us Irish women on social media? I’m sure many of you have Irish friends and if it encourages just one more person not to forget to vote it would be worth it.

I had a termination when I was 22 and felt deeply shocked and less than human when the Irish nurse told me ‘we don’t do that here’ when I asked about my choices. Luckily I was living abroad (just coincidently at home when I found out) so had one as soon as I got back to the country I was living in but I avoided tying myself to an increasingly abusive man who would have been able to take my baby from me and force me out of the country if he’d wished.

I credit my 4 beautiful children, my kind, supportive husband and my freedom to be the kind of Mum I always wanted to be from that decision.

So many Irish women have a loaded gun to their heads when they find out they are pregnant and it’s wrong to force them to become a Mum. This doesn’t even take into account all the mishandled miscarriages and devastating cases of foetal abnormality. Every woman is vulnerable to a miscarriage that doesn’t resolve immediately and Irish women have been forced to hold on to a dying heartbeat till they themselves have septicaemia and/or PTSD. It’s barbaric and wrong. And makes women feel useless and dehumanised.

Please help us.

You might want it get the title of this thread changed to 'Repeal the 8th!', you might get more views.

ReanimatedSGB · 25/05/2018 13:18

My thoughts are with the women of Ireland. I've been posting and retweeting a fair bit on social media, so have a lot of my friends.

ElfrideSwancourt · 25/05/2018 13:19

I've posted on fb - really hope it goes through and if it does, that it might help change NI where abortion is still illegal.

halfwitpicker · 25/05/2018 13:19

Yes, does anyone has a good fbook link or something to share?

drearydeardre · 25/05/2018 13:21

nothing to do with anyone but the Irish population - their laws, their decision. What help do you think will make a difference?

Cwenthryth · 25/05/2018 13:23

I've been sharing and liking furiously, solidarity to you and all Irish women, fingers and toes all crossed here.

I also sincerely hope that once the repeal vote wins, attention will then turn to Northern Ireland as well.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/05/2018 13:25

drearydeardre
If its nothing to do with anyone but the population of Ireland can I assume that the Vatican in Italy has sat on their hands and not in anyway attempted to influence people's voting given they are not part of the population of Ireland either.

Hideandgo · 25/05/2018 13:25

The best thing on Facebook to share is ‘In her shoes’ so search for that on Facebook.

Thanks for the support @drearydeardre. But to answer your question it’s very easy to not be bothered going out to vote at the last minute for whatever reason so a bit of noise on Facebook from your friends could make a big difference to individual votes.

I have posted my support on my social media platforms. solidarity with the women of Ireland, I so hope this vote goes the right way.

iBiscuit · 25/05/2018 13:27

Deirdre do you also think that child marriage in other countries is none of our business?

This is a humanitarian issue.

Newspeak · 25/05/2018 13:28

To my Irish Sisters we stand in solidarity with you.

To the brave women who have spent years campaigning for this, this is your day. I salute you!

LoveInTokyo · 25/05/2018 13:30

I have been in pieces reading the stories on the "In Her Shoes" page.

I have never been to Ireland and I don't think I know anyone voting in the referendum, but I have posted on social media and you are all in my heart and mind today.

Everything crossed.

Hope the vote gets through

impossible · 25/05/2018 13:36

Good luck with this. You have lots of support.

Dulra · 25/05/2018 13:37

Loving the support just on my way to vote. Just got a verbal bashing from my dad for voting yes and felt very upset by it this thread has massively helped.

Polls close at 10pm count won't start until the morning result should be known by tomorrow afternoon

Thatoneoverthere · 25/05/2018 13:39

Have done on Facebook and Twitter (which has me in tears with some of the stories/ efforts and I'm not a crier), as my mother said I am 'impressed & inspired by massive effort Irish citizens worldwide'. Do wish I had been more proactive so I could have flicked a tenner or something to support people who were flying home to vote.

Good luck!

villageshop · 25/05/2018 13:39

I have tweeted and shared. Good luck everyone.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/05/2018 13:41

Have been posting support all over FB most of this week for Ireland to Repeal the 8th.
Really really hope the vote goes for Repeal.
Good luck! Thanks

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/05/2018 13:44

Good luck women of Ireland!

AgentProvocateur · 25/05/2018 13:45

@willnotbetamed, it’s an Irish vote. NI will remain in the dark ages WRT abortion unfortunately.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 25/05/2018 13:47

I dont use social media but have my fingers crossed!

willnotbetamed · 25/05/2018 13:49

Whoops, just noticed that I put NI instead of Eire. I do know the difference - was just reading about the soft border and Brexit before and not concentrating...

Bramble71 · 25/05/2018 13:52

Alreay done! Wishing everyone involved with the Repeal the 8th campaign all the best. Fingers crossed you get the right result. Wish I could do more.

noeffingidea · 25/05/2018 13:52

I'm not on any social media, but I want to wish you all the best. Standing in support of our Irish sisters, and Flowers to all those who have had to make this sad journey.

RatRolyPoly · 25/05/2018 13:53

My friends over there are out protesting today - with them in spirit!
