Repeal the 8th. You may not have a vote today but if you are willing, could you show support for the yes vote for us Irish women on social media? I’m sure many of you have Irish friends and if it encourages just one more person not to forget to vote it would be worth it.

I had a termination when I was 22 and felt deeply shocked and less than human when the Irish nurse told me ‘we don’t do that here’ when I asked about my choices. Luckily I was living abroad (just coincidently at home when I found out) so had one as soon as I got back to the country I was living in but I avoided tying myself to an increasingly abusive man who would have been able to take my baby from me and force me out of the country if he’d wished.

I credit my 4 beautiful children, my kind, supportive husband and my freedom to be the kind of Mum I always wanted to be from that decision.

So many Irish women have a loaded gun to their heads when they find out they are pregnant and it’s wrong to force them to become a Mum. This doesn’t even take into account all the mishandled miscarriages and devastating cases of foetal abnormality. Every woman is vulnerable to a miscarriage that doesn’t resolve immediately and Irish women have been forced to hold on to a dying heartbeat till they themselves have septicaemia and/or PTSD. It’s barbaric and wrong. And makes women feel useless and dehumanised.

Please help us.

*demonstrating rather than protesting I should say

SistersOfPercy · 25/05/2018 13:56

Shared my support on FB this morning, 25 year old DS replied that he didn't even realise this was still a thing until yesterday.

Surprising how many of the younger generation do not.
Everything crossed for the right result.

Baubletrouble43 · 25/05/2018 13:56

Beautifully wriiten post. Happy and proud to support x

LARLARLAND · 25/05/2018 13:56

I've shared my support - wishing Ireland much luck today 💕

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 25/05/2018 13:57

I have been, on Twitter and FB. I've seen plenty of other non-Irish people showing support too.

Fingers crossed for Ireland.

mostdays · 25/05/2018 13:58

I have done :)

We stand with you.

PieAndPumpkins · 25/05/2018 13:59

I'm not at all someone who sees a fetus as just a bunch of cells, but I will absolutely and with all my heart, with tears in my eyes today, fight for women's right to choose. Because shit happens and life is incredibly complicated.

ReanimatedSGB · 25/05/2018 14:04

This thread was all over Twitter yesterday - ways women outside Ireland can offer help and support.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2018 14:15

I don't do social media (excepting MN) but if anyone could use a shareable link to this editorial in today's Times, I think you can c&p it

I can’t believe in this day and age woman are not allowed to have abortions in Ireland. It seems absurd to me that a woman has no right over her body or becoming a mum. It’s disgusting that woman are forced to go abroad or to back street abortion clinics. I don’t think I personally could have an abortion but would never criticise anyone’s for having one either.

AnxiousKatie · 25/05/2018 14:19

yes to#Repealthe8th

FeralBeryl · 25/05/2018 14:22

To our Irish Sisters - with you all the way!
🇮🇪🇮🇪 I defy anyone to read the #hometovote threads on twitter and not well up.
People flying from all over the world to vote. Irish people are absolute legends. Fact.
Devastated at the true ignorance of some of the 'no' voters.

andthislittlepiggywent1 · 25/05/2018 14:27

Keeping my fingers tightly crossed for you all today x

Drivemecrazy1974 · 25/05/2018 14:28

This whole thing makes me so angry - it shouldn't even need to be voted for - it should just be a given that no woman should be forced to continue a pregnancy that is not good for HER. The thought of anybody having to get on a boat to travel to another place to get an abortion is abhorrent to me. I really really hope the vote goes the way you want it to....

Lethaldrizzle · 25/05/2018 14:30

Good luck! Star

heateallthebuns · 25/05/2018 14:30

I am 6 weeks pregnant and living in Ireland, but not eligible to vote. It's pretty scary that if I got sepsis or pre cancerous smear etc etc my treatment would be postponed as the embryo's right to life would be considered equal to mine. I've had two healthy pregnancies here, but I definitely feel my healthcare is compromised. I would be most worried about leaving my existing children without a mother in any emergency situation.

MiggeldyHiggins · 25/05/2018 14:35

nothing to do with anyone but the Irish population - their laws, their decision. What help do you think will make a difference?

Well we've got hordes of american evagnelicals funding the LoveBoats No campaign, as well as masses of them here campaigning, as well as the fecking Orange Order coming down to show us whats what, so its not like there isn't already foreign involvement.
You can help with a show of support and visibility and encourgement.

Not to derail the thread but may I ask something? If this is a 'yes' would doctors/nurses still be able to refuse to do them on their own beliefs or is the law that they have to do it? I'm just thinking of gay marriage in the UK being legal but some places refuse to do it.
