To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

Are there actually people who really believe that a size 12 is overweight Shock

Gwenhwyfar · 28/05/2018 18:55

"if you go somewhere like H&M, Zara or Topshop the sizes are teeny tiny"

No, the sizes are not teeny tiny in Zara. In H&M & Topshop I'd say they're what they should be, not teeny tiny.
I was 2 lbs away from being overweight recently and am 5'3 so not VERY short, just short. I still fit into 12 in lots of places. My waist is also over the NHS guidelines for diabetes.

"Are there actually people who really believe that a size 12 is overweight"

At the top end of it, I'm overweight, so yes. Remember that a size 12 now is not what it was 20 years ago. A 12 in somewhere like Next is really big.

BougieCoconut · 28/05/2018 19:02

*teeny tiny in relative terms

Have to stand by my assertion that anyone who is within a few inches of 6ft is unlikely to be overweight at a size 14-16

MissReginaPhilange · 28/05/2018 19:07

I hate this shit. I'm 5ft6 size 8 and weigh just over 8 stone. No I'm not starving, yes I eat loads. Sick of people poking noses in "oh you need some meat on your bones " or "your wasting away"
Actually got to the point where I recently joined the gym to put on a few pounds to quit all.these ridiculous comments. I have had 3 kids and the only time I was bigger was when I was pregnant.
It's not ok to slim shame people same as it isn't ok to call.someone fat!
Stop tearing each other apart its not am attractive quality

MissReginaPhilange · 28/05/2018 19:09

And before it starts..... I have a huge appetite and eat like a horse....naturally thin is actually a thing!

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 19:17

I am 5ft 2in, weigh 9st 3lb and am a size 10. I’m in my 50s so won’t be shopping in places where the sizes are tiny obviously but I do fit size 10 in Joe Brown and I don’t think they are huge. I am not medically overweight though I know many Mumsnet terms would consider me so. I eat healthily and exercise but I know that if I want to enjoy a normal social life and have a nice time on holiday I have to accept iI might gain a pound or two occasionally but it will come off again. I refuse to obsess about it.

SgtFredColon · 28/05/2018 19:29

I am 5 ft 6 and am overweight when I’m wearing a size 12. My sister is 5 ft 6.5 and is slim in a size 12. Different body shapes. I’m in a 14 at the moment and am obese (bmi 30+)

Gwenhwyfar · 28/05/2018 21:31

What's your body shape Sgt?

SgtFredColon · 29/05/2018 00:34

Appley with a very small frame. I can wear a size 12 at around 160lbs but that is overweight and I have a big belly. Just saying it’s possible to wear size 12 and be overweight.

SgtFredColon · 29/05/2018 00:35

Sorry probably a size ‘15’ when obese really not 14 but I have size 14 jeans that fit.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/05/2018 06:56

" Just saying it’s possible to wear size 12 and be overweight."

Oh, I know that. As I said been 2 lbs away from overweight and still fitting into many of my 12s.

Was going through some old clothes yesterday though and couldn't fit into any 12s, mainly couldn't even get them over the hips. (Have about 10 old pairs of bootcuts that I can't get rid of!)

IncyWincyMouseRat · 29/05/2018 08:01

At 5’4 I was definitely overweight as a size 12 and even fitted some 10s - BMI of 26ish mind you so not hugely overweight. But I (luckily) carry nearly all my weight on my boobs and bum and my waist stays relatively little. I find it so bizarre when reading magazines or whatever and it says ‘Barbara is 9 stone and a size 10’ as I fit a 6-8 comfortably at that weight! I guess I’m just dense! 😂

sweetboykit · 29/05/2018 08:51

Eating loads to one person could be very different to another, it is so subjective. At my worst emotional binge eating, I'd have a whole (large,) packet of digestive biscuits and two rounds of sandwiches and three bags of crisps for lunch. I think that is eating a lot. Whereas someone else might think a round of sandwiches and a piece of fruit is a lot of food.

If I woke up with either of the duchesses figures I’d be permanently hungry! It’s not natural for me to be that size. If I overeat one day I’ll eat a lot less the next & im 11 stone. I tend not to overeat unless it’s a special occasion as I’m disabled & exercise is difficult.

dontbesillyhenry · 29/05/2018 09:52

I've been very thin/anorexic. I was NOT happy and would not want to go back to spending every moment of my life obsessing about food/calories/exercise/not gaining an ounce thank you very much

SerenDippitty · 29/05/2018 10:14

I bet if offered the chance all the women slagging off the duchesses would love be to wake up with either of thier figures!

Not me. Certainly not Meghan’s figure as she’s an apple and I’m an hour glass. Not Kate’s either as I couldn’t afford to be that thin. It would not look good on me.

Lethaldrizzle · 29/05/2018 10:34

Most people are 'naturally thin' - it's over the years people eat too much for their activity levels and put on weight. Not all - some. The human body was designed to be naturally slim.

dontbesillyhenry · 29/05/2018 10:57

So explain my kids. One is prone to get a bit portly. The other is like a whippet. They both have the same meals and do the same activities. People pooh pooh this but genetics absolute come into play with weight

Lweji · 29/05/2018 11:32

The human body was designed to be naturally slim.

Clearly some people have been "designed" to store energy more easily than others.
With poor resources, you can hardly tell one type from the other, but in populations with high food availability the difference becomes more obvious.

(also, our body wasn't designed, it evolved - but I digress)

reallyanotherone · 29/05/2018 11:42

The human body was designed to be naturally slim

No, it wasn’t. It evolved to have a good fat and energy storage system so we could survive illness and periods of drought and starvation.

Being “naturally slim” with no storage reserves makes no evolutionary sense. If we were “designed” that way why do we have fat cells and a mechanism for storing said fat?

derxa · 29/05/2018 11:44

No, it wasn’t. It evolved to have a good fat and energy storage system so we could survive illness and periods of drought and starvation. True

itsnotnormal · 29/05/2018 12:03

I would be dead within an afternoon it is true to say, nature doesn't favour us slimmies if it was the zombie race to the end!

VogueVVague · 29/05/2018 12:04

@reallyanotherone
Oh we're designed to store a bit of fat, just not a size 16+ level of fat.
Seriously you go to france amd quite rarely see anyone over a size 14 (and ive lived on loads of different parts of the country).

Come back to the uk and its the norm.

What makes their bodies so genetically different do you reckon?

formerbabe · 29/05/2018 12:06

Many women smoke to suppress their appetite...not sure that's very healthy.
