To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

*'Naturally thin' is a load of shite.

You can train yourself to eat less and it becomes your new normal. That's what most people mean by 'naturally thin'*

Oh FGS. Not everyone has to train themselves to eat less. Some of us have a small appetite. We don't restrict what we eat. We eat according to our natural appetite. We would have to train ourselves to eat MORE. How is this difficult to understand?

VogueVVague · 28/05/2018 13:46

@bananafish81
I think it makes them feel better to think theres some kind of sacrifice involved, like we pay a price for being slim when actually - we dont.

Its mental, like refusing to believe some women have naturally silky poker straight hair (it must be straightening).

bananafish81 · 28/05/2018 13:47

Thin people exist in clusters- fashion, art, entertainment, publishing, big cities, zone 1 of London, Manhattan, and so on. How does this genetic tendency towards being thin overlap so neatly with the above

LOTS of people have to work at being slim

SOME of us don't.

I grew up in suburbia in the NW. I was skinny then

I now live in zone 1 and work in the media. I'm still slim

No one is saying ALL slim women don't have to work at it. But denying that some of us exist is also bollocks!

RoadToRivendell · 28/05/2018 13:50

See my above post re: clusters of thin people.

I don’t doubt that naturally thin people exist; rather, I suggest that they comprise a small fraction of the population of thin people.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 13:50

Road I don't live in a cluster of slim people, I live in a rural farming area not an art gallery or artisan cafe for 50 miles. Hate to piss you off even further but I'm in my early 50's, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it Smile.

HTH

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/05/2018 13:51

I used to be thinner when I was younger BMI 19, from about age 50 it drifted up to 21. Never been less than size 12 though so according to poster upthread not a normal size but outsize. I’m 60 now and size 14 BMI 21 so definitely must be outsize

RoadToRivendell · 28/05/2018 13:51

Sigh.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 13:55

Banana I've tried that too, you just feel so horribly full don't you? Didn't make any difference to the scales either. I don't have a waist at all mind you that is my age.

derxa · 28/05/2018 13:56

I'm very overweight at the moment. The reason why is no mystery. I eat too much of the wrong things. I don't move enough. 7 years ago I was at a healthy weight after having lost 7 stone. Unfortunately Igot breast cancer and lost my impetus due to surgery and BC drugs I stopped eating healthily and going to the gym/running. Being slim is due to a mindset and having certain habits. People have different metabolisms though.
MM and KM are at a fashionable weight. It has not always been fashionable to be very slim.

raisedbyguineapigs · 28/05/2018 14:01

There was a programme on about a woman who apparently ate junk food all day but was still thin. When they looked at what she ate, she didn't snack, always ate at the table and didn't go over 2000 Cal's a day without thinking about it. She'd eat a pastie but that was a meal, not a snack. Her friends would eat a meal and a pastie. MM comes from a world where she is surrounded by very thin women not eating much. Her portions and the food she eats are normal for her. KM is very athletic. She probably does watch her weight too again because if you are sporty it's part of your lifestyle.

Lweji · 28/05/2018 14:33

I honestly don’t know what would happen if I ate a shed load of junk.

I know what would happen to me. I'd feel sick and possibly throw up.

I tend to leave food on my plate at restaurants because I cannot physically eat more of that food.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 14:39

Me too Lwejl . I hate eating out as people comment, I often ask to take the leftovers home and eat the next day for lunch!

Lweji · 28/05/2018 14:56

Regarding children, it was interesting to note that at one children's party with easily 60 children, the only clearly overweight child was the one who didn't run around playing with the others. Instead she stood at the table eating.

bananafish81 · 28/05/2018 15:07

Channel 4 documentary The truth about slim people

"Some people stay slim despite never dieting or exercising. This programme follows two slim people over five days, unpicking their every move and morsel to find out what determines their size."

BougieCoconut · 28/05/2018 15:14

With regard to previous comments on the thread I feel like banging my head against a wall for many reasons, but a main one is the claim that a UK size 14-16 is overweight.
Only!!!
If!!!!
You!!!
Are!!!
Short!!!

"a main one is the claim that a UK size 14-16 is overweight.

Calm down Bougie. The average woman in the UK is about 5'5, so many women are short.
Also, you'd have to be very tall to be a size 16 and not overweight.
There were people denying on here recently that a size 12 is overweight, it's quite easy to be overweight even as a size 12 with size inflation as it is.

bananafish81 · 28/05/2018 16:18

@littlegreyhare I did manage to get my weight up to BMI 19 with a lot of effort - consultant wanted my weight up to start IVF due to risk of hyperstimulation in women with both PCOS and low BMI.

I thought I had some mega fast metabolism that meant I could eat whatever I wanted and never put on weight

Which is true - except that 'whatever I wanted' is just not as much as I thought - once I started tracking with MFP I found my daily calorie intake if left to my own devices, eating in line with my natural appetite, just wasn't enough to gain weight

So I followed a strict regime which involved oh so many avocados, so much peanut butter, Greek yogurt, protein powder, eggs - in addition to 3 meals a day. I tried to eat c.2000 cals a day and I was eating all the frigging time

I did find that eating so much did seem to stretch my stomach and stimulate my appetite, so the more I ate the more my sense of hunger seemed to trigger. So it did get easier. But it was still a very concerted effort

After my failed IVF and miscarriages the weight just fell off again - stress just kills my appetite and I find it very very hard to eat

So yes it is possible to put on weight, but it means deliberately forcing down a lot of food, and feeling quite unwell in doing so!

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/05/2018 16:37

Even when I was 5'10 and 9.5 stones I was a size 12 and I certainly wasn't overweight. I have never fitted into a size 10 ever.

PoorYorick · 28/05/2018 16:46

I am very sure that most slim people are slim because they have good eating and exercise habits. But there are definitely a few people who can trough and slob and still be skinny.

DameDoom · 28/05/2018 16:46

If I am even slightly stressed my appetite totally disappears and it is not pleasant. However, on a normal day to day basis, I have to work at keeping my weight down. Low carb really helps and I do eat incredibly well as do all my friends - we are all different builds . Two friends don't have to work at it all but they still eat well the rest of us are careful - it's a small sacrifice.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2018 18:26

Good that nobody in the royal family ever marries the sort of woman who eats more when under stress, isn’t it? Oh, apart from Sarah Ferguson. ( She is the exception that proves the rule-and look what happened to her!

DameDoom · 28/05/2018 18:29

I thought Sarah Ferguson looked fab at the royal wedding.

The80sweregreat · 28/05/2018 18:41

I didn’t like Mrs Clooneys outfit much but Sarah Ferguson looked really good.
She seems such a fun person to be around.
( not that I know) more personality than her ex anyway.

Verdad · 28/05/2018 18:44

Can't wait to see Fergie at Eugenie's wedding - she'll be in her element!

BougieCoconut · 28/05/2018 18:49

Gwenhwyfar you really don’t have to be extremely tall. I’d say 5’9 or 5’10 and above although everyone’s built differently obviously.

Of course a UK 12 isn’t overweight unless one is very short. I’m sure some places do size inflation but if you go somewhere like H&M, Zara or Topshop the sizes are teeny tiny. There’s (usually) a huge difference between sizes at shops aimed at young women and shops aimed at older ones.
