To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

But formerbabe surely I am naturally slim then if I have a small appetite, actually what I've noticed over the years is that I stop eating the minute I'm full whereas people around me will continue eating until their plates are completely empty but they are totally stuffed, in my eyes they are not eating 'naturally' they are going way beyond that! I amnot restricting calories I am eating completely to my natural limit. From my observation others intentionally go well beyond that limit.

formerbabe · 28/05/2018 12:47

I'm challenging the narrative of people who say they can't put on weight because they are naturally thin. I'm sure the vast majority could put on weight if they tried. Just be honest and say you eat fairly small amounts and healthy food. It's like celebrities who are very thin but try to convince us all in magazine articles that they never work out and love junk food, which is funny because when I stop exercising and eat junk food I just get fatter!

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 12:50

Highhorse you sound amazingly fit and healthy. Look at lots of top athletes esp runners like Mo Farah, bet he is as healthy as possible and yet there is nothing of him as with lots of East African athletes.

Highhorse1981 · 28/05/2018 12:51

littlegreyhare

I am. I look scrawny though!

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 12:52

Formerbabe hand on heart I promise that I have tried eating more but I just can't. My weight at 47kgs and 5ft 4" has been the same for 35 years and never wavered whether I sit around for a week at Christmas or busy as anything and doing exercise - both of which are normal for me.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 12:53

Formerbabe I eat my fair share of crap too honestly.

VogueVVague · 28/05/2018 12:54

@formerbabe
Like i said i have legs like MM. If i just pig out i put weight on on ny tummy and hips. My legs remain total sticks. Its called being an extreme apple! Look closely at pics of mm and you'll see shes one too. Her limbs are slimmer than her waist would suggest, and she probably puts weight on lile me too

Highhorse1981 · 28/05/2018 12:55

formerbabe

Interesting point. Genuinely.

However I think children are quite revealing.

My siblings and I had HUGE appetite and were allowed a lot of junk (80s). I remember one day my sister had 6 packet of crisps!

All three of us very very skinny. Yes, extremely active (went to very competitive sporty schools and after school activities) but lots of children are. And we had friends, ate much less and as active and yet much bigger.

Highhorse1981 · 28/05/2018 12:59

I honestly don’t know what would happen if I ate a shed load of junk.
The thought is honestly so alien to me that I wouldn’t do. I eat what I eat. A lot but very healthy.

RoadToRivendell · 28/05/2018 13:03

'Naturally thin' is a load of shite.

You can train yourself to eat less and it becomes your new normal. That's what most people mean by 'naturally thin'.

They both look great. Faux concern over women who exercise a lot and have chosen to be very thin is quite tedious.

C0untDucku1a · 28/05/2018 13:05

formerbabe i eat until im full. I snack on fruit and veg throughout the day. I dont deprive myself of anything i want. But i do eat a lot less than my fat friends. They also think they eat normal portions. They don't.

I honest to god think almost all over weight peopel would be shocked to find out what a healthy portion size for them actually is. Because they are used to over-eating.

Whatever shape you are naturally, overweight at that shape is still overweight.

Mominatrix · 28/05/2018 13:07

Formerbabe, I am also a naturally thin person. I don't count calories, never have dieted, and simply have followed my natural appetite. The idea of eating takeaways every night and several bars of chocolate everyday is really unappealing and certainly is not a natural way of eating. 2 generations ago it certainly was not a normal way of eating and people were slimmer - would you say that they were actively suppressing their natural appetite?

I grew up eating a diet which was most plant based with mostly fish or tofu as proteins and desserts were fresh fruit - this formed my taste buds. I also grew up with a cultural attitude towards food of eating small amounts of a variety of things and not eating until one felt full. This is not suppressing a natural instinct - it is a normal cultural attitude in the country of my ethnicity. I have do desire to eat in a different manner, and am certainly not denying myself on a daily basis by eating this way.

I suppose that they way I eat is similar to the mindful eating pattern in that I follow the desires of my body.

I am very active, but I do not run to stay slim - I actually eat less if I don't exercise because I just am not as hungry. I exercise because I love the feeling of exercise and feel grumpy if I go more than 2 days without a run.

Like the Duchesses and several posters, I am slim, toned, active, perfectly healthy and am certainly never hungry or denying myself. I don't assign any emotional value to food - certainly not on the types of food you mention.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 13:07

Road showing your ignorance there big time then aren't we? Trained oneself to eat less is just hilarious. I have just had a plate of cheese plus apple and some chocolate. Now full thanks very much so have stopped eating. No training required.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 13:09

Totally agree re more overweight friends, mystified at how high they pile their plates then go on about needing to lose weight. They don't seem to make the connection, they really do need to train themselves if they want to be slimmer.

RoadToRivendell · 28/05/2018 13:11

littlegreyhare did you know this thread isn't about you? Great that you're naturally skinny. The vast majority thin women aren't.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 13:14

There are quite a few other posters on here telling you the same thing road so not just me.

VogueVVague · 28/05/2018 13:14

Its not just portion sizes but amounts of meals too. The idea that you need 3 meals a day and 2 snacks.
Yeah maybe once upon a time when people walked more, did loads of household chores by hand and had more physically demanding jobs, but if your day is:
Drive to work
Sit at desk
Drive home
Watch TV

...you probably dont need a hearty breakfast, cereal br snack, sandwich and crisps lunch, another afternoon snack, curry for tea, 2 glasses of wine to relax and some biscuits and hot chocolate before bed.

Just sayin

VogueVVague · 28/05/2018 13:15

@RoadToRivendell
How would you know?

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 13:16

In fact road the last dozen people posting are all pretty much saying the same thing if you took note.

Jozxyqk · 28/05/2018 13:26

Just out of interest would those of you who say 18.5 is absolutely fine call a BMI of 24.5 a healthy weight, or would you call it “borderline overweight” or even “fat”?

Yes. I have a BMI of 24.7 & am visibly slightly overweight. I'm trying to lose it, as my weight has been creeping up since I became disabled; it's really hard to do any meaningful exercise with my health issues. I'm petite so it doesn't take a lot of weight gain to put me into the overweight category, either. I used to be very slim at just 16lb lighter.

I'm naturally slim. My natural appetite is small so unless I really work at it, my BMI is low

I was able to put on some weight to get my BMI up to 19 when I really really worked at it

I had to track everything I ate with MFP to make sure I got 2000 calories. I was eating all the sodding time and constantly felt bloated and ill because I was forcing food down I had no appetite for

Naturally thin means your body's natural inclination is for a small appetite.

RoadToRivendell · 28/05/2018 13:34

It doesn’t stand up to any kind of scrutiny.

Thin people exist in clusters- fashion, art, entertainment, publishing, big cities, zone 1 of London, Manhattan, and so on. How does this genetic tendency towards being thin overlap so neatly with the above?

It doesn’t. They’re nearly all working hard at it. Particularly the over 40s.

I don’t have any of that. I’m still not naturally thin. Having a dodgy thyroid doesn’t help.
