Would you curtsy to Meghan?

I wouldn't curtsy to ant of them tbh. She is apparently allowed to insist on this now.

My grandad always told me,” Bend your knee to no one but shake the hand of any.”
I sort of agree in principle but can think of many hands I wouldn’t shake and several folks to whom I might curtsy . Circumstances alter cases. Meghan is one of the Royal Family and in the unlikely event that I was in a formal situation where such deference was expected I suppose I would. If it was the Queen I definitely would.

I've been reading the Chalet School recently, and it set my teeth on edge reading about girls bobbing their curtsy to the headmistress, the saintly Miss Annersley. At least they didn't have to curtsy to Joey!

SadieHH · 23/05/2018 09:15

The royals don't trouble me one way or the other but hell no would I curtsey, I don't think my knees would bend that way anyway. I might bob my head to the Queen though, if I was in a good mood which is unlikely

FASH84 · 23/05/2018 09:16

I met princess Anne through work last year and had a fairly lengthy conversation with her, she actually knows more than I thought she would about my industry, and had some interesting insight into recent changes and the impact on service delivery. We were briefed that we needn't curtsy as she prefers it if people don't in these contexts. No one did, I found her very engaging and genuinely interested. I met the Queen when I was at primary school and we were told to curtsy then. I wouldn't curtsy for Meghan.

pigsDOfly · 23/05/2018 09:19

Pretty certain that not even the Queen can insist on being curtsied to, so Megan is in no position to insist on anything.

purplelass · 23/05/2018 09:20

If she curtsied to me I'd consider it...

purplelass · 23/05/2018 09:21

She is apparently allowed to insist on this now

I'm now intrigued to know what would happen if she insisted and someone refused!

Polarbearflavour · 23/05/2018 09:22

I wouldn’t curtsey to any of them. I used to be cabin crew and served a few royals. Curtseying wasn’t required!

IAmNotAWitch · 23/05/2018 09:26

How would any of them "insist"? Without threat they can insist away, I am not doing it.

pigsDOfly · 23/05/2018 09:42

Maybe those who refuse to curtsy will be sent straight to the tower to be beheaded.

See you there.

merrymouse · 23/05/2018 10:26

I think it's a bit like all those stories about people complaining they couldn't go to bed until Princess Margaret had gone to bed at 4am.

They could have gone to bed whenever they wanted - they might not have been invited back but why would they care about some random woman? It only mattered because they cared about her status.

As far as the Queen is concerned, most of us will never meet the Queen, certainly not more than once , so it's difficult to understand what would happen if you didn't curtsy - you wouldn't be invited back to another royal garden party? Presumably you wouldn't be there in the first place if you didn't have time for the Royal Family.

Bejazzled · 23/05/2018 10:26

She is apparently allowed to insist on this now

Lot of bilge being put forward as fact on yet another anti royal this thread. There is no "insist" within the protocol for any of the royal family, even the Queen. It's left entirely to the choice of the individual as detailed in this link.
No need to curtsey

That's interesting Fash. She doesn't get the credit she deserves although I think she doesn't care. I know my df has met her, Charles and Phillip. Df found Anne charming but said Charles knew sweet f£&k all about df's field although it's one of his 'passions'. Df said he really showed himself up by not understanding some of the industry jargon because he'd been so opinionated and outspoken about it.

SaltireSaltire · 23/05/2018 16:58

MissEliza - and re the opinions he has - he mega sulks if you disagree with him!

Avoatoso · 23/05/2018 17:10

Nothing to do with insecurity, just I personally don’t support the monarchy, would I be polite as I would to any other random person I met, yes, curtsying no.

OutofSyncGirl · 23/05/2018 20:39

Meghan is apparently required to curtsey to the duchess of Cambridge. I think it's all a load of bolleaux

OutofSyncGirl · 23/05/2018 20:43

Bleurghhhh

Would you curtsy to Meghan?
MidnightAura · 23/05/2018 20:45

I read that Meghan has to curtsey to Kate, Camilla and the senior Royals. Kate has to curtsey to the Queen for the first time when she sees her.

They have to curtsey to Beatrice and Eugenie if William and Harry aren't with them,

If they want to observe that (if it's true) more power to them. I just wouldn't curtsey if I were to meet them myself.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/05/2018 20:46

No way. Wouldn’t curtsy to the rest either.

MaireadMacSweeney · 23/05/2018 20:49

This thread has reminded me that when I was at primary school many, many years ago, it was a a rule that girls had to curtsey to the headmistress and boys had to salute! Grin

If I attempted a curtsey now I wouldn't be able to get up again!

formerbabe · 23/05/2018 20:55

I read somewhere...no idea if it's true that who curtseys to who depends on who they're with.

So M curtseys to K if W and H are both there.

K curtseys to M if W isn't there but H is there.

K curtseys to C if W and PC are there

C curtseys to K if W if there but PC isn't.

I think!

OutofSyncGirl · 23/05/2018 21:07

Sounds highly confusing to me!

OutofSyncGirl · 23/05/2018 21:16

Apparently Holly Willoughby curtsied to Theresa May 😂😂
