I wouldn't curtsy to ant of them tbh. She is apparently allowed to insist on this now.

What’s insecure about it sales? I wouldn’t curtsey because I don’t see the RF as superior to me or anyone else. Nowt to do with “insecurity”.

merrymouse · 23/05/2018 07:13

What situation would you be in where you would have to curtsy to her?

I would, just to be polite. It's just pomp and ceremony really. Doesn't mean anything, she's not an evil dictator, she's just a member of the royal family. I'd show anyone respect unless they gave me reason not to and if I'm her case, respect is a quick curtesy then I'd do it. Can't promise it would be any good as I haven't curtsied to anyone since I was about five and had to do it for my ballet teacher (who was also not an evil dictator to my knowledge).

French2019 · 23/05/2018 07:17

It isn't even about respect for the individual so much as for the position or role.

But that's exactly the point, I can respect the individual as a fellow human being, but I don't respect the position or the role. I don't buy into the idea of the monarchy. IMO, it's completely different to a post that has been democratically elected.

It's also very hard to understand the idea that everyone deserves the same respect. For example, people who squeeze in the fact they met members of the royal family into an AIBU reply lose a little. They lose a little more talking about "us" when they can only talk about themselves but think they're able to speak for others.

Sorry, but wtf?

Olddear · 23/05/2018 07:18

Wouldn't curtesy to anyone. No idea why that makes me insecure?? Given that my self esteem is somewhat robust!!

BakedBeans47 · 23/05/2018 07:23

Position in society. Achievements. Influence.

My boss ticks more boxes on all of these than me. I must be sure to go and curtsey to him when I go in this morning Confused

I’m also perfectly secure in myself sales. You aren’t half talking nonsense. The days of people having to bow and scrape to their “betters” who are no such thing are long gone. If you still want to partake in such a ludicrous custom, more fool you.

Plus it looks stupid, I remember seeing the photos of TM curtsying to the Queen when she became PM and she looked ridiculous.

I’ve no beef with the RF at all, not a raving royalist or a raging republican, but other than the sovereign holding the style “her/his majesty” I’d do away with the “royal highness” rubbish. There’s no need for it.

Mrsbird311 · 23/05/2018 07:24

Yes of course I would, it’s the correct etiquette!! Why would curtsying to a member of the royal family make me feel like a lesser person, it’s just how it is and what you do!! I feel sorry for those who think it’s beneath them to do so!!
In fact I would prefer to curtsy to everyone rather than this bloody kissing everybody lark!! When did we all become French? Takes forever to leave a flippin room ,

I don't curtesy.

grasspigeons · 23/05/2018 07:28

Yeah - I would cos it's the done thing. After the revolution I won't be.

merrymouse · 23/05/2018 07:29

In fact I would prefer to curtsy to everyone rather than this bloody kissing everybody lark!!

Oh my goodness yes! Please let’s just to curtsying instead.

French2019 · 23/05/2018 07:32

Well, perhaps a little reading would do you some good.

And what do you suggest I read, oh wise one?Grin

karmacoma1 · 23/05/2018 07:34

A psychologist on 24 hours in police custody, said offering a handshake is like saying ‘I am your equal’. So I would do that. You are no more, or less than me. Despite whatever fancy title you’ve been given.

I can’t see any situation in which I’d have to meet a royal, though 😬

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 23/05/2018 07:43

I don't expect I'll meet any of them, but if I did, I expect I would treat Meghan the same way I'd treat any other member of the royal family. Which is to say, I'd pay careful attention to the discussion of protocol in the briefing at work beforehand and follow that.

SusanneLinder · 23/05/2018 07:50

I wouldn't curtsey to anyone. I am unlikely to meet the Royals, but I would never put myself in a position where I had to.

Olddear · 23/05/2018 07:50

Have you Hoist? Happily not in my case! I'm must be the exception to your rule!

BlueSuffragette · 23/05/2018 07:57

No, I'd curtsey to nobody.

catinapatchofsunshine · 23/05/2018 07:57

I once had to shake hands with the Duke of Edinburgh, but it didn't occur to me to curtsey and I'd have felt a right prat if I'd tried.

Surely nobody over the age of about 7 curtsies anymore unless they're acting in a period drama, people just bob their heads if they do anything out of the ordinary.

MrsPresley · 23/05/2018 07:58

I wouldn't curtsey to anyone, not even the Queen. I would expect them all to curtsey to me though because I outrank them all...im married to the King Grin Grin

French2019 · 23/05/2018 08:04

Thank you Hoist, but I am well aware that many members of the Royal Family work hard, and I don't need your links to demonstrate that. As I stated earlier, it isn't about respect for them as individuals. I believe that most of them take their royal duties very seriously and they try to do a good job. The queen, in particular, works exceptionally hard for a woman of her age. I can respect that.

What I don't respect or agree with is the institution of the monarchy, and the concept that certain people have higher status merely because of birth or marriage. I am well aware of how it works, so thank you for your other link, but it wasn't really necessary. I just don't feel that we have any place for such an institution in the modern world.

I'm well aware that the alternatives to monarchy are not perfect either. A quick glance across the Atlantic is enough to remind us of that. However, I still believe that, on balance, an elected head of state would be preferable.

You can call me moronic or misguided if you wish. It doesn't make your argument any stronger though.

noeffingidea · 23/05/2018 08:05

grasspigeons it's not really the done thing any more. Most people don't curtsey now, unless perhaps it's for a formal court ceremony.

formerbabe · 23/05/2018 08:10

I think the queen is amazing.

As for the rest, they either seem to be work shy and/or have the morals of an alley cat.

AnneElliott · 23/05/2018 08:34

I did when I met Princess Anne, although I met her through my job and was representing my Department, so thought I should. It wasn't expected by her though - we had a long note about what wasn't expected beforehand.

I did sort of feel like doing the full ballet one. Can hear our ballet mistress now going "out to second position, curtesy, and again". I resisted the temptation to do that.
