Anyone who knows about cars- have Kwik Fit ripped me off?

DH thinks they have. I took my 9 year old Toyota IQ in for an MOT and interim service (£89.)

They called and said the work (see pic) needed doing. I agreed and then googled and realised it seems excessively expensive. I queried their prices and just got mansplained and patronised. Do these prices seem reasonable to you?

I'm not a car bod but I wouldn't be paying that. Drive it off and take it to an independent. Or ring them up first.
Last time I went there I got a big list, the dB checked it over and said it didn't need doing.

SickOfTheMansplainers · 22/05/2018 18:08

Sorry should have said, they've charged me £858 to change brake pads and tyres, do the alignment and swap windscreen wiper blades. £89 of it is the cost of the MOT and interim service.

Would love to have others' input. I don't mind paying it if it's normal but everything I'm googling seems to come up cheaper.

From experience, kwik-fit try and throw in a few unnecessary essential extras.

I would not agree to the work and take elsewhere (obviously pay for what is done). Is there an independent garage nearby?

SickOfTheMansplainers · 22/05/2018 18:10

I stupidly agreed on the phone as was caught off guard and don't know anything about cars so I have already paid this- I just wanted to know if it's fair or not. If it's very inflated I will contact Kwik Fit head office and make sure I never go there again!

Hi OP - that does seem expensive but chain places like kwik fit generally do charge more than local, independent garages (in my experience anyway). Not sure how much that stuff should cost but 4 new brake pads and discs was always going to be expensive unfortunately 😩

Sirzy · 22/05/2018 18:10

I have just (As in 3 hours ago!) paid £200 for mot, service and front brake pads and disks.

I would be getting a quote elsewhere

araiwa · 22/05/2018 18:10

How is it mansplaining when you have no clue about it?

twinkletoedelephant · 22/05/2018 18:10

My sister took her car for mot at quick fit, they also quoted about £800 worth of things that needed doing...

Took it to another garage he charged her £28
The mechanic had no idea what half the things they stated urgently needed repairs were. He also showed her how to do oil and water and fill up her own washers, for free :)

May be worth getting a second opinion?

SickOfTheMansplainers · 22/05/2018 18:11

Everything I can find online says tracking costs about £35, they've charged £80. I asked them about this and they just patronised me.

OP posts:
MindatWork · 22/05/2018 18:11

Can you drive off and get it done elsewhere if those things are an MOT fail?

SickOfTheMansplainers · 22/05/2018 18:12

Mansplaining by saying "ask a man to check the wheel nuts for you" and "unfortunately living in London costs more than elsewhere darlin" (I hadn't mentioned cost of living!)

RandomMess · 22/05/2018 18:13

The brake pads are comparable to what I've been quoted by garages for my car but could be £25 cheaper per pair elsewhere. Wipers is branded lol right too but you could fit yourself cheaper...

DisneySenior · 22/05/2018 18:13

That is absolutely extortionate! Google each part and it will show you suppliers and prices - nothing near what they are asking for.

I hate kwik fit with a passion. Local one ripped my granny off a couple of years ago - £1400 for a handbrake cable, brake pads, one tyre and a 'service'. We got the money back and the manager was sacked but I wouldn't go near them again.

placebobebo · 22/05/2018 18:13

Those prices are total bollocks.
Google for yourself break disk and pad sets and you'll see them for much cheaper than that.
Take the car somewhere independent and they'll probably tell you it doesn't even need doing. It's extremely rare for all the disks and pads to go at the same time.

YoYotheclown · 22/05/2018 18:13

I slick have asked what needed changing. Bought the parts from Eurocar parts or Ebay. Then just payed for the labour. Would have cost you less half of that. But for kwik fit sounds about right. They over charge for sure.

YoYotheclown · 22/05/2018 18:13

Kursk · 22/05/2018 18:14

The pads are on amazon for £20 for a set. and disks are £35 a set. Most of what you are paying is the mechanic’s Hourly rate.

DH would so that job at home in the driveway for under £100.

AornisHades · 22/05/2018 18:16

Kwik Fit? Very possibly.

teenagerparent · 22/05/2018 18:18

Have they already done the work? If so there isn't much you can do, but you could take the invoice to another local garage and see what they think and you'll know for next time. I paid nearly £400 to have my brakes done a few months ago so that could be right for them. I think Kwik Fit do a free brakes for life if you have had them done with them too

starryeyed19 · 22/05/2018 18:18

Fuck no. That's ridiculous. Kwik Fit are the absolute worst. Go elsewhere

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 22/05/2018 18:18

it's Kwik fit, so more then likely yes you have been ripped off, either by doing stuff you didn't need or bumping the price up.

I wouldn't like your bill as it's not broken down into parts and labour.

I always ask for prices of parts and labour before they do the work.

If I thought my bakes needed doing before I took it in, I'd do a quick Google on the prices of parts so I have an idea of what they should charge.

alfagirl73 · 22/05/2018 18:19

Absolute rip off - my partner is in the motor trade and I'm a bit of a petrolhead - if I broke down outside Kwik Fit I wouldn't go in! The work they do is shocking. There is no way that work should be costing that. Is that a quote or have you already agreed for them to do the work? Call an independent garage (or call a couple of them) and get a quote for the work then challenge them on it.

starryeyed19 · 22/05/2018 18:19

Call them and cancel the work. I'll bet they haven't started yet.

Ilikelotsofthinngs · 22/05/2018 18:19

Yep I called quick fit for a quote for parts I know I need plus tracking. They quoted me 53 each for the parts I need a pair of and 60 for tracking.
Looked online I can buy the parts for nine quid each and found an independent that will do the tracking for 30.
Rip off merchants 100%
