Anyone who knows about cars- have Kwik Fit ripped me off?

DH thinks they have. I took my 9 year old Toyota IQ in for an MOT and interim service (£89.)

They called and said the work (see pic) needed doing. I agreed and then googled and realised it seems excessively expensive. I queried their prices and just got mansplained and patronised. Do these prices seem reasonable to you?

I don't know the answer to the pricing you've been charged but I do know for sure that Kwik Fit are 100% rip-off merchants. I took my car in for a new exhaust and they phoned me to say that they'd discovered x, y & z also needed doing urgently to ensure my car was safe, at a cost of £400. I declined their offer, got a second opinion from someone I trusted & saved myself a fortune. That was 5 years ago & the thing they said needed repairing urgently is still absolutely fine & perfectly safe!!
Avoid them like the plague!!

GettingBackToMe · 22/05/2018 21:42

Not sure about your costs but a couple of years ago Kwik Fit said my car failed MOT as lights not bright enough - they quoted over £300 to replace headlight units. I bought brighter bulbs and a headlight refurb/polishing kit for under £30 and it passed fine!

Ohmydayslove · 22/05/2018 21:47

Praise the Lord op!!

Quick fit totally took me for a ride on repairing brake lights! As above quoted me £300! Dh took the car in to another quick fit and they said they were fine.

I actually don’t understand how this mydogynist company hasn’t been outed yet.

Me and dh now have a game on visiting them with our cars alternatively.

Every time dh gets a smaller quote every time

If you’ve not collected yet ask them to put discs and pads in boot. I would then get indie to check and confirm they are for your car and that they need changing. If they don’t you can then put a complaint in to HO. I am sure these have been on watchdog for miss selling. Good luck

Have you actually seen the MOT Fail notice?

NC

My DP is a KF manager. I showed him this and he was Confused so they’re not all like that. Mine’s a good egg Smile

And pps encouraging a KF boycott, it’s not nice to wilfully threaten someone’s livelihood. Everyone knows KF are not the cheapest, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the work they do is dearer than Dave’s Garage round the corner, who probably won’t give you a receipt and will deny all knowledge of having ever seen your car should anything go wrong.

I do get 60% discount at KF though Wink

I know it's too late for this incident but you should never take a car to Kwik-Fit except to get an exhaust or tyres replaced urgently, i.e. when your exhaust has fallen off or a tyre has burst and it's impossible to wait for an independent garage to do the job. Even then other chains are better and cheaper (NTS, Formula 1, etc.). The chains serve a useful purpose in being open 7 days a week but you shouldn't use them for work that an independent garage will do better and much, much cheaper: it's like calling an emergency 24-hour plumber to come and service your boiler next week.

Kwik Fit told my neighbour she needed a new carburettor (amongst other things) when she took her car in for a ‘winter check’ and quoted her an exorbitant amount. She had very little money and was in tears telling me she might have to give up her car. “Are you sure they said carburettor?” I asked, she showed me the quote, it definitely included a new carburettor....... for her DIESEL car! (Diesels don’t have carburettors). I’m sure there are some honest Kwik Fit people about but my local one is definitely a cowboy outfit...they won’t even give a price for any work without doing a ‘health check’...they do, of course, charge for that so even if you know that you need your front brakes done you cant even get a price without paying out! (But they say it’s okay as they’ll refund the health check if you get them to do the work it recommends).

My local KF are a bunch of rip off merchants. They charged me for stuff I had not asked for and which they did not mention - and that was just replacing the tyres! Tyre insurance, “nitrogen fill” and chrome valve caps. All unnecessary. Thieving misogynistic wankers.

Diesels don’t have carburettors

Neither do petrol cars for about the last 20 odd years! Electronic fuel injection is far more efficient, I don't think any of the major manufacturers have made a car with a carb since the early 90's when emission controls started getting more serious.

tvfriendagain · 23/05/2018 19:35

Another positive Kwik Fit story- I took my 8 year old car there for an MOT after another garage said it wouldn't pass it unless I bought something for £100s. I've now had a service and MOT there for the last few years- never been charged for any extras etc and everyone has always been super helpful and friendly. Last service they said it all looked very OK for an 11 year old car and nothing needed to be done. In London.

Well this was IN the 90s and her little car was pretty old. She stopped driving completely a long time ago (I don’t think she wanted the hassle of renewing her licence when she turned 70) and just uses her bus pass these days.
