Anyone who knows about cars- have Kwik Fit ripped me off?

SickOfTheMansplainers · 22/05/2018 18:06

DH thinks they have. I took my 9 year old Toyota IQ in for an MOT and interim service (£89.)

They called and said the work (see pic) needed doing. I agreed and then googled and realised it seems excessively expensive. I queried their prices and just got mansplained and patronised. Do these prices seem reasonable to you?

All of your brakes, front and back, needed replacing at once?

Bollocks did they.

And £120 for a set of brake pads? Christ almighty, what were they made of? Solid gold?

That's absolutely horrendous.

Kursk · 22/05/2018 19:36

DH said that front brakes wear out much faster than rear brakes. For them to both need replacement at the same time is highly suspicious

reddington · 22/05/2018 19:43

DH said that front brakes wear out much faster than rear brakes

Not necessarily true these days, and quite plausible if it wasn’t KF we’re discussing.

YetAnotherUser · 22/05/2018 19:48

Generally speaking the fronts tend to wear out quicker than the rear, as the front is usually where the engine is and as the car stops, the front brakes take the brunt of the force.

Further to that, the discs wear out a lot more slowly than the pads. So on the balance of probability, it's highly unlikely that the front and rear brake discs and pads all needed changing at once.

NoFucksImAQueen · 22/05/2018 19:58

haven't gone near Kwik fit since quoted me for tyres than the vw dealer and that was with the 25% off they had going on at the time. they seem shocked when I walked away. Halfords are another bunch of cowboys

NoFucksImAQueen · 22/05/2018 19:59

more for tyres that should say

Happens more than you’d imagine, I’ve done discs and pads or just pads all round on more than one occasion. Totally depends on the car and driving style. Modern driving aids are making this more likely and I have even heard of cars being heavier on rear brakes than front where you have a ‘virtual’ LSD with the brakes being used rather than a proper one, lots of hard acceleration leads to lots of rear brake wear. Most likely it’s just KF trying it on though.

Shocking rip-off, but then Kwik-Fit are notorious for it.

Years ago, they tried to tell me I needed a new exhaust because it was so loose, while they still had my Mondeo up on the ramp.

I looked at the exhaust, reattached the rubber bracket that holds the exhaust pipe in place to its little hook, gave the exhaust a wobble, gave them my most charming smile and said "Blonde doesn't mean stupid, you know".

I don't know how they keep going tbh, their prices are criminal. I hope every MNer reads this thread and boycotts them from now on.

Maelstrop · 22/05/2018 20:07

Major rip off merchants. They told me all my brakes needed replacing so I took it to an independent guy who said this was rubbish. Another time, they forgot to tighten the locking nuts enough, wheel nearly came off doing 90 up the A1! Shock

MrsMarigold · 22/05/2018 20:13

Recently DH took our car to kwik fit for an MOT, he paid for the MOT which the car failed, and took it to another garage where they said kwik fit always says you need wheel bearings repaired and brake pads replaced but in 90% of cases people don't. Our car didn't so we saved.

readyforapummelling · 22/05/2018 20:21

Oh my god ShockShockShock. The cheeky bastards!!!

Brake pads and discs are around £40 each and wipers are under £20. The tracking normally costs around £40.

The cheeky cheeky fuckers.

readyforapummelling · 22/05/2018 20:22

Go on Eurocarparts website and look at how much brake pads and discs actually cost. They have put on nearly £200 labour for fitting. Shocking.

user1471439240 · 22/05/2018 20:32

Yes, parts would be around £200 labour around 2 - 3 hours including service and Mot. Probably around £350 at an independent, trusted garage.
Its wise to get a vehicle Mot tested at a place that doesn’t promote brake / suspension etc repairs.
Local councils usually have their own place to test their vehicles, they welcome the public and have no reason to charge for parts not required.
The price of those brake pads is shocking btw.
Sorry.

PurpleRobe · 22/05/2018 20:38

How much is it for them to do the work? Is that included in the prices?

We usually get a quote for parts vs fitting separately so we can get the parts ourselves cheaper.

Saved £350 doing that last week

reddington · 22/05/2018 20:44

Many garages will refuse to fit customer supplied parts, causes them more hassle than it’s worth.

MrsMarigold · 22/05/2018 20:48

Our local council MOT place is almost impossible to get through to, to make a booking.

DH always has me on Volvo Forums or Pistonheads and Europarts/Ebay before anything gets done to the car, the mechanics are often amazed at my knowledge.

Storminateapot · 22/05/2018 20:55

I'd expect those prices from a main dealer, they are massive rip-off merchants and we stop using them as soon as warranties are expired.

The prices aren't so high as to be out of line with a Toyota dealership, so I think you will have to suck them up, but you could most likely have shaved off £200 or more by using a good local independent.

Use this opportunity to find out who friends use etc so you have someone lined up for next time.

bridgetosomewhere · 22/05/2018 20:59

Oof that is a hell of a lot of money.

Dh orders discs and pads for our cars and does it himself usually. The parts are around £80 I think for my Ford Focus.
Google your car make and the parts you need at somewhere like autopart or euro car parts and see how much they are.
Labour is £50 an hour at some garages so that will sting you for sure.

Tracking I get done at our local tyre place think it’s £15-20

I got my snow tyres fitted for £12 each and dh bought them online for £40 each. So £52 per tyre fitted.

Sirzy · 22/05/2018 21:04

Surely if all your breaks where at fail MOT point you would be able to feel it? Mine only got an advisory on the front ones and I knew they where on the road to needing replacement

BettyPitts · 22/05/2018 21:08

WTAF? Do NOT pay this.

No no no no no.

Fucking rob dogs.

user1471439240 · 22/05/2018 21:13

4 discs and 4 sets of pads for this vehicle are £100 on Ebay, delivered....

reddington · 22/05/2018 21:15

4 discs and 4 sets of pads for this vehicle are £100 on Ebay, delivered....

Only 2 sets of pads required so maybe even cheaper

FASH84 · 22/05/2018 21:16

Never use kwikfit! They are an absolute rip off

SugarMiceInTheRain · 22/05/2018 21:18

Kwik fit are notorious for telling you that your car needs work doing that doesn't need doing. Took my car there for an MoT test, they failed it and said brake pads and discs needed replacing. I was a bit sceptical so took it elsewhere without getting the work done and it passed with no advisories at all. They are con artists, please don't give them your custom in future.

OAPman · 22/05/2018 21:30

I used to work on the service desk at a main dealer. You have been royally ripped off. No way should all that cost £800. Its a trick of the trade to "health check" your car and then ring you up with the aim of getting you to agree to as much of it as possible. The work will have needed doing to some degree, however may not have been urgent. I would never go to kwik fit due to their massively inflated prices. You can get brake pads and discs for minimal prices from a motor factors, theyre making some serious moolah off those parts.

BTW I'm a woman despite my username.
