MIL's wedding outfit

Posting on behalf of a friend who is unsure how to deal with this.
Friend is getting married this summer and is wearing a traditional white floor length wedding dress with veil. Wedding is very small with 19 guests, all immediate family. MIL has just sent her a picture of a floor length white dress which she intends to wear. How does friend respond?
Two choices - get STBDH to deal with it, or reply "haha, I thought you were serious!"

@eosmum, can't believe the designer went along with that!

@ShowMeTheElf

Suggest to her that her dress is lovely but to prevent her looking completely batshit should you ask all the guests to wear a wedding dress too so she will be in good company?

I love that!

Seriously, tell STBDH to warn her that she'll be laughed at, and won't be allowed in the wedding photos.

Her fiancé needs to have words with his mother about her choice of outfit. To my mind its a deliberate attempt on her part to upstage the bride on her wedding day and have all the attention on her instead. It will have the desired effect if she wears this because other people will be looking at her.

I would rescind her wedding invitation if she refuses to change the outfit.

eosmum · 15/05/2018 16:06

I know, the dress cost thousands. MoB was paying for it, I'd love to know why the designer said nothing and went along with it. Maybe afraid of losing the business.

If your friend doesn't get it sorted OP she may end up looking at her MIL like Sophia Loren's DIL did on her wedding day.........

Offer to send to to fiance's family and see whether an aunt or grandma will explain it in words of one syllable.

blueskyinmarch · 15/05/2018 16:13

I have nothing to offer i just want to know what the reply is!

AmazingPostVoices · 15/05/2018 16:14

The Bride moved country soon after the wedding

Smart girl.

SuitedandBooted · 15/05/2018 16:19

My prospective SIL got wind of MIL wearing a white dress to her wedding.

Big mistake on MIL's part. SIL bride takes no prisoners, and swapped her own dress for a full length RED one, shot through with gold thread. Stunning.

MIL's face was a picture - and white wasn't very flattering on her......

Peterrabbitscarrots · 15/05/2018 16:22

There was a previous bride on her ages ago who got wind that someone planned to wear white to her wedding. She arranged for her mother to “guard” the door of the wedding venue and send the offending guest home to get changed into something more appropriate Grin

Would only work if the bride’s parents were hosting the wedding though I guess

@SuitedandBooted

Was that your MiL or her mother?

Laiste · 15/05/2018 16:26

wibbly i always think of that picture when MOB outfit threads come up Grin

But lets face it - if you're marrying the son of someone like Sophia Loren then you've got to be a bit naive thinking you won't be upstaged at some point.

(Imagine having Kim Kardashian as MOB on your wedding day!)

shallichangemyname · 15/05/2018 16:33

I am awaiting details of the response and promise to update :)

Shock
Juells · 15/05/2018 16:36

She's actually just texted her this: "that's lovely, does it come in other colours?"

That was a very good hint. Dying to know if the MiL will take it, or blithely waffle on.

Crinkle77 · 15/05/2018 16:36

I don't really get why people are bothered if someone wears white to a wedding. It will be pretty obvious who the bride is and as it's a small wedding I am sure most people will know who is who. Just let her wear it and ignore the attention seeking. She will just show herself up.

Juells · 15/05/2018 16:40

But every eye will be drawn to her in the wedding photos.

DragonsAndCakes · 15/05/2018 16:40

Am I being daft? That photo is Raquel Welch not Sophia Loren.

Crinkle77 · 15/05/2018 16:44

No they won't the bride will have a really fancy dress on, possibly veil, bouquet. She will be more obvious.

QuiteUnfitBit · 15/05/2018 16:51

Ditto Confused

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 15/05/2018 16:51

"Sorry MIL, I've already got my wedding dress, don't need another one!"

Just that.
If she does insist on wearing it she will be the one that looks desperate and ridiculously silly.

InkyToesies · 15/05/2018 16:52

WibblyWobblyWoo - isn’t that Raquel Welch?

InkyToesies · 15/05/2018 16:53

Oops, sorry, didn’t refresh and see other replies.

Lordamighty · 15/05/2018 16:55

Dragons is correct, that is Raquel Welch not Sophia Loren.
