Do I do something with this cat??

Sorry, not really AIBU, but needed some replies sooner rather than later.

I haven’t seen my neighbour for days, not actually sure when I did see him last. Have knocked his door twice over the weekend regarding something else, and no reply.

His cat has been in the communal close on and off over these few days and I’m feeling increasingly sorry for him.

Can I give him milk?? I know it probably best not to feed him, but is a little bowl of milk okay?? (Only have semi skimmed).

Sorry, if this seems ridiculous, but I don’t know what to do for the best. I know cats can fend for themselves, but last time the neighbour went away, I know he left the cat with a family member.

You can take it to a local vet for a chip check. There maybe a mobile phone number registered. Or see if you have a local Lost and Found Pets page. We have one and they are amazing.

catandlemur · 14/05/2018 20:43

Fish fingers will be fine as a one off, cats vary on what they will eat. I have the super fussy variety that only eats two foods but a lot of cats eat much more.

If the neighbour doesn't come back you can take to vet but they do put down if no one claims.

GladysKnight · 14/05/2018 20:43

You could contact the local cats protection league, if there is one. But before that, do any of your neighbours know this chap, do you think. I would probably start by knocking on a few doors

rageface · 14/05/2018 20:46

Really catandlemur?? Sad

He’s out there meowing now. 3 fish fingers in the oven for him, 4 for me Grin

I don’t imagine any of the neighbours will know, but I’ll maybe knock a couple of the note doesn’t get a reply tomorrow

Yes, when our cat escaped through the roof one time and a lady took her in, didn't know she was ours, took her to vets and they said they would keep her for a week then put her down. Thankfully it was a nice lady who just took her home but she had a cat herself so it was difficult but we got her back pregnant!

rageface · 14/05/2018 20:58

I really don’t want a cat Sad

There’s not much in a fish finger once you take the batter off, eh? Hmm

I would be phoning the police to check on the neighbour. I'm amazed your only concern here is the fact that you may get lumbered with a cat. This is a huge warning sign fgs.

MrMeSeeks · 14/05/2018 21:00

Cats cannot digeSt lactose
Not true, some cats lose the ability to digest it, but some don’t.

halfwitpicker · 14/05/2018 21:01

Fish fingers for a cat?!

halfwitpicker · 14/05/2018 21:01

Make sure you offer him ketchup too

HemanOrSheRa · 14/05/2018 21:03

There’s not much in a fish finger once you take the batter off, eh? No there isn't. You may have to surrender yours too Grin.

rageface · 14/05/2018 21:07

Oh FFS. The flat has been checked. I have already said that on Saturday I KNOW he wasn’t in there. I don’t have to divulge how I know that or anything else, but I do.

Be amazed all you like. I didn’t ask for advice about the neighbour because I do not need it.

Maelstrop · 14/05/2018 21:08

You can call 101 for a welfare check. Is your neighbour elderly? Stick your nose through the letterbox, dead body smell is pretty distinctive. Sorry to be brutal, found my neighbour lying on the floor after a stroke one day, was glad we were friendly, she would have been there a lot longer had I not checked.

Findingdotty · 14/05/2018 21:09

I know the conversation seems to have moved on to the cat ... but are you sure your neighbour is actually ok?Hmm
Just because he didn’t answer the door doesn’t mean he was out the house. He could be dead or lying on the floor somewhere.

MrMeSeeks · 14/05/2018 21:11

There’s not much in a fish finger once you take the batter off, eh? hmm
They’ll eat the batter too Grin
Id s it possible he’s left food for the cat? They can be greedy buggers.

AnaViaSalamanca · 14/05/2018 21:14

Yes feed the cat if you think he is hungry or scruffy, but if he looks healthy don't.

We normally don;t answer the door if we are not expecting anyone or anything. And one of our cats is a beggar who goes around the neighbourhood being all cute so gets fed at a couple of houses (that we know). She is quite fat and on diet food at home so we would prefer people don't feed her, but we have no idea how many times she eats and at which houses...

Ollivander84 · 14/05/2018 21:22

Min likes scrambled eggs < helpful >
Apparently most cats do

Luisa27 · 14/05/2018 21:27

Well said @Ollivander84

  • better to feed him and he gets the odd extra meal - than he starves to death in plain sight! 😥
NotTheQueen · 14/05/2018 21:39

I’m an anti social bitch.... so my priority would be the cat too

(And to be honest, it’s usually been if I like the cat, I like the owners when I usually meet them)

Cats like canned fish (just not in brine), most types of meat, scrambled eggs, etc A tiny bit of milk won’t do any damage

namastethefuckawayfrommenow · 14/05/2018 21:44

Give him/her a raw egg and he/she will love you forever!

FootFlapperage · 14/05/2018 21:49

I didn't realise cats like scrambled egg! Think I'll try some on my cat 👍

PeppermintPasty · 14/05/2018 21:51

Please please don't feed the cat if you know it belongs to someone else. I am absolutely projecting here but I am currently waiting for the police to interview my batshit horrible neighbour who has spent years trying to steal my daughter's cat. A couple of weeks ago I went to retrieve him for the eleventy-fifth time and she assaulted me.

This is where it can end up!! You have been warned!

PeppermintPasty · 14/05/2018 21:51

If your neighbour's dead though, well, call the police anyway!

lljkk · 14/05/2018 21:53

I'd feed the cat. You can get rid of it later if you don't want it hanging around (just stop feeding it). Where TF did neighbour go, I wonder?

JamPasty · 14/05/2018 21:56

Good on you OP! I bet the cat loves the fishfingers!
