Do I do something with this cat??

Sorry, not really AIBU, but needed some replies sooner rather than later.

I haven’t seen my neighbour for days, not actually sure when I did see him last. Have knocked his door twice over the weekend regarding something else, and no reply.

His cat has been in the communal close on and off over these few days and I’m feeling increasingly sorry for him.

Can I give him milk?? I know it probably best not to feed him, but is a little bowl of milk okay?? (Only have semi skimmed).

Sorry, if this seems ridiculous, but I don’t know what to do for the best. I know cats can fend for themselves, but last time the neighbour went away, I know he left the cat with a family member.

Don't give tuna or salmon in brine. The salt content can do serious damage to a cat's kidneys.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/05/2018 20:13

I would feed in these circumstances, he hasn’t eaten possibly since Saturday and therefore hasn’t had much water because they get water from food.

Tinkobell · 14/05/2018 20:13

A bag of nice dry cat kibble and a big bowl of fresh water. Purine One cat kibble is very liked by lots of cats....blue shiney bag.

catandlemur · 14/05/2018 20:14

I would feed him, I wouldn't give him milk or even cat milk as quite a few cats can't tolerate this. I would also check neighbour is OK though may just have left cat for a few days - we sometimes leave our cat over the weekend with lots of food and water as she hates cateries and attacks anyone coming in to feed her. Any length of time would go in a cattery. I'm not sure ours could fend for herself, she's scared of everything.

Ours loves tuna in spring water but you would have her move in if you offered her that especially if your are child free.

rageface · 14/05/2018 20:16

I should say, he left the close on Saturday night/Sunday morning, so maybe he’s eaten then at least.

But I’ll leave him some water for tonight and stick a note through the door. See if I hear from his human over the next day or so.

Just checked and I’ve no tuna or chicken in anyway

Have you got any fish fingers/breaded fish portions? You could cook them up and peel off the breadcrumbs. I'd feed the cat, poor thing. Your neighbour hasn't moved and left the cat Sad?

Carolynnnna · 14/05/2018 20:24

Don't give tuna or salmon in brine.

Thanks for the correction Angelic. Yes, tuna or salmon in water only.

rageface · 14/05/2018 20:26

I do have fish fingers! But is processed a good idea??

I really don’t know Herman. I can only hope not.

YOU SHOULD NEVER FEED SOMEBODY ELSE'S PET

God this really annoys me! It could be on a special diet, or need medication... Or what happened with ours - neither of them ate anything for nearly 2 days, and I was really worried. Luckily I thought to keep them inside for a day, and they were magically hungry again, otherwise that would have been £100 wasted at the vet because they were "off their food".

Also he could have left it a timed food box - we do this if we just go away for a day or two, - the food box is timed to go off at their normal mealtimes.
Unless the cat looks much skinnier, leave it alone. Definitely don't give it milk or tuna!

Carolynnnna · 14/05/2018 20:30

The fish fingers won't hurt as this is an "occasional" treat. Make sure the batter is off and they're not too hot.

Cliveybaby · 14/05/2018 20:31

Also I'd be a lot more worried about the old man... the cat will hunt if it's hungry.

rageface · 14/05/2018 20:31

Well if he left it a timed food box, I hope he left it a step ladder for the reaching the door handle.

Ah right lol, assumed there was a cat flap!

Finderscrispy · 14/05/2018 20:35

Knock on door and check on neighbour. If no answer leave a note on door for anyone visiting .
I would just feed whatever you have, it’s a one off until you have more info, but milk is not good for cats.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/05/2018 20:36

Fish fingers with the coating taken off will be fine as a one off if the poor little pickle is starving Sad.

Zeelove · 14/05/2018 20:38

Fish fingers will be fine if the car is starving Hmm it's a cat.... if it's hungry it will eat. yes feed it

rageface · 14/05/2018 20:38

What do I do if the neighbour doesn’t come back? Sad

Ollivander84 · 14/05/2018 20:40

You can feed cats. Better one with a home gets an odd meal than a stray gets ignored and starves to death because nobody fed it. Mine wouldn't have survived had someone not taken it on themselves to feed him

Finderscrispy · 14/05/2018 20:40

Have you actually knocked on the door. Just knock and explain you where worried...

Ollivander84 · 14/05/2018 20:40

Cats protection would help if the neighbour doesn't return

Finderscrispy · 14/05/2018 20:40

If they answer that is.
