To hate the body positive movement

I used to believe in it until I was diagnosed as pre diabetic. Genetically I gain weight easily and I comfort ate.

Since Boxing Day I have been eating healthy and started exercising and I've lost weight. But I've also become healthy. I used to be in constant pain and tired all the time but that changed as soon as I took charge.

It scares me that they are leading people down a dangerous path by promoting an unhealthy lifestyle.

🙄

RunMummyRun68 · 13/05/2018 12:32

It's body positive not unhealthy positive

There's a difference

angryburd · 13/05/2018 12:32

Had anyone ever looked at a fat person and thought "Cor, I'd love to look like that!!"

LaundryPile83 · 13/05/2018 12:33

I think there’s a middle ground. No one should be made to feel like an object of disgust because of their weight.

Raven88 · 13/05/2018 12:33

@RunMummyRun68 Saying that you can be healthy at any size is promoting an unhealthy lifestyle.

I lost 5 stone and took up running

I can now run marathons!! Regularly do half marathons as they are more manageable training wise

But I'm a stone heavier than I should be. But no matter what, I struggle to lose more than a pound now

So I'm body positive with what I now am

Fit and healthy and 50 this year!

RunMummyRun68 · 13/05/2018 12:35

So I'm promoting an unhealthy lifestyle then .... so be it

acceptableMargin · 13/05/2018 12:36

yawning801 · 13/05/2018 12:37

So to be healthy, you have to be stick thin, gnawing carrot sticks whilst blending up a quinoa and flax seed juice? No - nobody's metabolism is the same.

Eatsleepworkrepeat · 13/05/2018 12:37

Yeah those fuckers feeling positive about their bodies, I hate that too Hmm
Given that a lot of over eating is an emotional response to feeling negative about yourself, I don't think body positivity is any more likely to cause obesity than self hatred does.

museumum · 13/05/2018 12:37

They’re not saying eat buns and wallow on the couch.
They are saying love your body for what it can do, nourish it healthily and exercise for mood and health benefits (not as punishment).
Body positive doesn’t mean don’t look after yourself. It means the opposite

BastardMs · 13/05/2018 12:38

It isn't about promoting being fat it's about loving the body you're in. If it happens to be fat you can still love it, still be worthwhile. Nobody aspires to be fat and threads like these are just thinly disguised fat bashing.

yy this. Beautifully put.

Raven88 · 13/05/2018 12:40

@BastardMs it's not fat bashing it's being honest with people. I'm still overweight and I have a lot of work to do. The people who told me I needed to get healthy have helped more than people who tell me I'm fine the way I am.

The body positive movement concentrates on being as healthy as you can be for the size you are. It doesn't deny the increased risk of certain conditions if you're overweight.

Jozxyqk · 13/05/2018 12:41

People make bad choices, and live with the consequences. It's not always obvious, or instant, but they do. I include myself in this, BTW.

Well done on losing some weight - hopefully it will help with the pre-diabetes. My DH is a prime candidate for this & I'm worried about him too. He's very firmly in denial that it's an issue, but has agreed to go to the doctor, finally.

BastardMs · 13/05/2018 12:41

People don't need honesty from strangers on MN. I knew when I was fat. I didn't need 'honesty' from people who think my body is their business.

yawning801 · 13/05/2018 12:42

"Go and be healthy! You're disgusting, looking like that!"
"What a good idea! I'll go and do that now!"

No. Hmm

Fairylea · 13/05/2018 12:45

I think there should be a middle ground. Everyone should love themselves. No one should feel embarrassed or ashamed just to be alive.

But we seem to have reached this weird stage where people think it’s somehow okay to be overweight as long as you’re eating healthily - and I admit I was one of those people for a while. Just being overweight in itself, regardless of what someone is eating, carries long term health risks.

However, being ultra skinny and not eating well is very bad too. I know a lot of people who are very slim but hardly eat or eat a lot of the wrong things.

I think as a society we have forgotten or are in denial about how to live healthily. People just don’t exercise enough. We’re all eating way too much convenience food.
