My friends just sent me this! How are these still allowed to be sold?!

I didn't think they were still allowed

NotUmbongoUnchained · 09/05/2018 12:44

Actually pretty shocked!

Maybe the shop found a load in the back room that had been forgotten for a few decades. Explains the price... doesn't excuse them being on the shelf though.

Badbadtromance · 09/05/2018 12:49

Disgusting

NotUmbongoUnchained · 09/05/2018 13:12

Haven’t spoken to her yet but hoping she kicked off!

Wherever it is, if they have a town centre manager they will normally get them to take them off sale.

SneakyGremlins · 09/05/2018 15:20
Shock
MightyMucks · 09/05/2018 15:21

Or trading standards are worth a call

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 09/05/2018 15:21

Revolting.

Hope your friend complained to the Manager.

Bluelady · 09/05/2018 15:21

Where are they? As in which town?

NotARegularPenguin · 09/05/2018 15:22

I’m sure I saw something recently about a shop still selling the actual dolls. Can’t remember if I saw them in a shop or read about it online.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 15:24

My friend (who is black) and I went into a shop in Scarborough beach front only to be confronted with a whole wall of the fucking things!
Woman behind the counter couldn’t see the problem Hmm

HoneyBadgerApparently · 09/05/2018 15:27

What are they? Confused

SneakyGremlins · 09/05/2018 15:29

Honey Golliwogs. Now considered to be racist as they're sort of a caricature of Black people

RoomOfRequirement · 09/05/2018 15:31

Yep, when I was younger we'd regularly go to Scarborough and they sold them in a lot of the beach front shops. I used to really like them, as a child with no understanding of the cultural significance. I had quite a few because I thought they were just a beach thing. When I went back a few years ago they still sold them.

user139328237 · 09/05/2018 15:31

Surely shops having products like this openly on display makes it easier to avoid shopping at places with racist owners.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 09/05/2018 15:38

This is in Cornwall in a big market place.

PinkHeart5914 · 09/05/2018 15:40

I think they can be sold still, I’ve seen a few cuddly ones in some “vintage” seaside shops recently.....

viques · 09/05/2018 15:44

The Enid Blyton shop near Corfe Castle used to sell gollies In an aggressively nasty way. I just googled them and apparently they have closed down. Good.

AmazingGrace16 · 09/05/2018 15:44

I went to an event a few weekends ago where there were dancers partially "blacked up" my DF and FIL kicked up a right fuss because they weren't fully blacked up and they were expecting to see this traditional dance. I was amazed they even did it partially tbh

abbsisspartacus · 09/05/2018 15:46

I thought they just rebranded them gollys? And could still sell them

passmetheloppers · 09/05/2018 15:47

AmazingGrace16 was that Morris dancing?

AmazingGrace16 · 09/05/2018 15:49

similar to morris dancing, yes

IronMansIronButt · 09/05/2018 15:50

I don't know what you mean by "allowed"? Who should stop them and under which law?

I think they are vile, would never buy one, and don't think I know anyone who would. But I don't see why anything other than social norms and pressures would lead to their eradication.

GladAllOver · 09/05/2018 15:52

I don't think they are actually illegal, but certainly offensive and as PP said it's a good indication to shop elsewhere.
