@tillytoodles1 I wasn’t arguing? I was explaining that the name change was the other way around to what you thought. Not arguing, just stating a fact.

whyslippersocks · 09/05/2018 17:06

There was a shop not far from me that sold brand new cuddly 'Gollies' only a few years ago. An older relative bought one for DD and could not understand why I was not keen on it or why I would not allow her to carry it around in her buggy. Relative had fond memories of hers from childhood and really wanted it to be a favourite for DD. I was amazed at the time that anywhere would sell them.

MillicentF · 09/05/2018 17:09

Tilly-he was Golly the gollywog. Golly was his first name.

To be fair they were called Gollies in the 1920s. More to do with trademark protection than sensitivity, I think.

I think you used to be able to collect labels and get a brooch in the 50s.

The Gollywog was one reason my father never bought me Noddy books, even back then he knew they were racist.

I've seen them on sale in lots of seaside shops. The isle of Wight had them all over the place

MillicentF · 09/05/2018 17:18

Bingo!

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 17:19

It was the haters that made them racist

Yes, how dare black people point out that a caricature mocking them is racist. It’s as if they’ve got rights! Hmm

CarefullyDrawnMap · 09/05/2018 17:21

For fuck sake. What do you need?

TheFirstMrsDV · 09/05/2018 17:22

It was the haters that made them racist

Bollocks
Its the fact that they are a crude caricature that makes them racist.
Don't try and rewrite history.

WTF have you put "white" in quotation marks? Confused

This is such a stupid comment 'it seems to be "white" people getting offended on their behalf which is more racist imo'

Because its incorrect about black people loving gollies.
Because if you think 'that is more racist' you don't have a clue what racist means.

soapyjoe1 · 09/05/2018 17:23

My son was bought one when they were revived a few years ago. Horrible thing. I am under the impression it became okay when they were just renamed as gollys not gollywogs.

lynmilne65 · 09/05/2018 17:23

why is a black doll 'revolting '???

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 17:24

@lynmilne65 it’s not. A caricature designed to mock and belittle black people is.

Gilead · 09/05/2018 17:30

MillicentF, they were just called Golly's if I remember correctly, I don't know when they added wg.*
No they fucking weren't. They were always called Golliwogs.

Gilead · 09/05/2018 17:31

Hey Lola Try the Jim Crow museum, you'll enjoy it there. Hmm

RavenLG · 09/05/2018 17:33

Morris Dancing 'black face' are usually from places that were coalmining towns. Men we're allowed to dance so they would 'black' their face with coal from the mines so people couldn't recognise them. It's a sore subject with Morris folk atm as the tradition is no way stemmed in racism but .. blackface. (I'm a morris WAG, and a little sad I know that).
The gollywog isn't ok though.

RavenLG · 09/05/2018 17:34

Hadn't rtft so sorry for the crosspost

Gilead · 09/05/2018 17:36

jim crow museum and golliwogs

C8H10N4O2 · 09/05/2018 17:36

It was the haters that made them racist

Yes, its all about those uppity black people having the temerity to object to being objectified in an insulting way by white people.

Lets replace all white dolls with sex dolls. I mean if women complain about them they are only haters making them sexist. Its not the dolls which would be the problem.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2018 17:37

Just what is it about fading seaside towns?? There's a place round the back of the harbour in Paignton which sells them too Hmm

And yes I know they're not illegal, but wouldn't you think folk would have more sense these days? It's surely not as if they can sell many ...

GreedyVegan · 09/05/2018 17:38

My daughter was bought a doll for her first birthday by dh grandparents. They are/were horribly racist and homophobic people. Haven't seen them since and neither have the children it was the final straw.

OuaisMaisBon · 09/05/2018 17:42

Do you think what is happening to the Windrush generation and the "hostile environment" are the result of endemic racism, or that this racism is allowed to flourish now as a result of May's stint at the Home Office and her sneaky establishment of the "hostile environment", coupled with Brexit allowing racism to manifest itself overtly nowadays?

It has been sabotaged and assumed it is racist along with people thinking its a crime to call things black. Offense was created and it was deemed unacceptable to call a black board a black board ffs and a black bag.
