I had one when I was a kid, my nanny bought it for me because she had one when she was little, so this was about 15-20 years ago, I loved it because i thought it was cute, I didn’t think it depicted a black person, I thought it was like any old cartoon, as soon as I was old enough to know the real hurt behind them I got rid. As a white person it’s not up to me to decide what is and isn’t offensive to black people. I have been told it’s offensive, and I don’t want to support something offensive, obviously this shop think it’s OK! Bit shameful really

When I was a kid, I thought the golly on the side of Robertson’s marmalade was cute in the same way as other kids liked the lion on the box of Frosties. I wanted to eat that particular marmalade because of it. I can well imagine some other children of my age innocently also had a golly toy. I was really shocked when I found out as an adult that it was a racist representation of a black person. Your poor grandad being called “golliwog”. Shocking that these are still being sold.

I asked one of the museum attendants in a dolls museum what those dolls are called now, and she said Jolly Gollies, and they had a large collection of them, which people had given them over the years.
