To wish the EU would throw us a bone so we can cancel Brexit

They don't want us to leave. We don't want to leave. So what could Macron'n'Merkel offer us so we can say "go on, we'll stay together for the sake of the kids".

So under the GFA it shouldn't matter if there was a hard border or not

The hard border wasn’t mentioned then because a) Brexit wasn’t even a consideration 20 years ago and b) they wouldn’t have been able to get all parties round the table to discuss the GFA at all if any kind of border checks were mooted. The GFA was specifically designed to keep the peace, which meant the eradication of checkpoints and ID travelling between NI and Ireland.

For someone “well versed in Irish history” you seem woefully unaware of the realities

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/05/2018 12:42

Which is pointless to raise because nobody outside the DUP want a hard border.

Allreadygone · 09/05/2018 12:43

@Somerville
I was not suggesting that ALL (typically) youngsters are forced into menial tasks but those that are not sufficiently engaged in higher education of some sort are not allowed to 'fester' at home but have a 'day job'. Having a gap year' where all (say 18 year olds) do a year of 'unskilled' work would probably be hugely beneficial to the country and in terms of sociability to themselves. The concept of having robots to do all the unskilled jobs is truly damaging to society. PAY DECENT WAGES to care workers and reduce the workload. You don't need a degree to make tea and help elderly folk do simple life tasks. Give care workers time to properly talk to those they are caring for. Social interaction is important.
For all it's fluffiness the film 'Wall E' is a frightening prospect, fat whinging 'blobs' of 'humanity' hardly capable of moving being catered for by machinery.
There is plenty of room in the UK for housing, you just have to prise the land away from the 'overprivileged'.

IronMansIronButt · 09/05/2018 12:43

The only point I was making was that nowhere in GFA does it rule out having a hard border. I'm quite correct in that

it does and you;re not.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 12:44

Sorry, the facts are we having too many people and are still receiving to many people for the infra structure to cope

The infrastructure that the UL government are responsible for. So your response to that is to give them (the ones who aren’t managing things properly now, by your own admission re infrastructure) sole control?

That makes no sense at all. Especially since a hard border is a non starter, which most of us realised before the referendum.

which meant the eradication of military checkpoints and ID travelling between NI and Ireland

Fixed that for you.

Usuallydormant · 09/05/2018 12:45

I didn’t see it because it wasn’t there, I don’t mean Junkers etc, so me some evidence and I don’t meet the bigwigs at the EU, it would have been nice if she had come round or perhaps do a bit of a news conference, to make us feel welcome, but they don’t really care about us leaving apart from the money, let’s be honest

www.ft.com/content/693b4b60-2f20-11e6-bf8d-26294ad519fc

The Irish were also pleading, among others. www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/ireland-s-role-in-brexit-referendum-1.2697818

Please, no revisionist bullshit.

To wish the EU would throw us a bone so we can cancel Brexit
A4710Rider · 09/05/2018 12:46

it does

Again, can you show me where it does, specifically?

Lweji · 09/05/2018 12:47

Perhaps if Merkel could have hold hands with Cameron. Wink

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 12:48

@A4710Rider being pedantic isn’t helpful. If you cannot understand why the reintroduction of any checkpoints would be difficult then that’s your own problem with comprehension and empathy.

Shouting the loudest and stamping your foot doesn’t change anything. The information was there before the referendum, it is nobody’s fault that some people didn’t choose to do their research.

The EU is mentioned throughout the GFA, in order to facilitate Brexit the GFA would have to have all mention of the EU removed, and the minute anyone starts deleting clauses the whole thing becomes meaningless.
Because there is then precedent for removal of clauses.

If you can’t understand the implications of that, I can only assume you don’t care because the reality is starkly clear.

Ultimately, though, it was the UK government's decision on a virtually 50-50 vote.

And poor campaigning by Remain (Tories and Labour). Don't blame Merkel.

A4710Rider · 09/05/2018 12:54

The EU is mentioned throughout the GFA

Have you actually read the GFA or are you just winging it?

Justanotherlurker · 09/05/2018 12:54

with your idea for concrete Britain we won’t need fruit pickers anymore,

We will, but Farmers will have to increase wages, it may then factor in automation but that is unrelated to brexit.

Everyone always brings up the cost of living and or wage increases, yet seem to ignore the very issue going on here, the fact that those 4000 fruit picking jobs was not tempting enough for people to come across from the Eastern europe is not just down to brexit.

IronMansIronButt · 09/05/2018 12:54

Again, can you show me where it does, specifically?

I;ve given you links that explain that, I'm afraid you have to read for yourself if you want to prove you are right (you're not btw)

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 12:54

Lweji No, No, that would be so wrong, they could have given him a peck on the check when he went cap in hand to them with his begging bowl out, instead they took the piss and sent him on his merry way, that will show them little englanders

A4710Rider · 09/05/2018 12:55

Don't blame Merkel

If Merkel had not of opened Europe's doors then we wouldn't be having this thread.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 12:55

As far as I remember the GFA also has a clause in it about holding a reunification Referendum in the event there is enough public support.

And were that to happen, the Tories would become toothless as the DUP would no longer be part of the UK government and therefore in no position to be part of a coalition.

It would also pave the way for another Scottish Indy ref.

A4710Rider · 09/05/2018 12:56

I;ve given you links that explain that, I'm afraid you have to read for yourself if you want to prove you are right (you're not btw)

Fair play, that's hilarious.

IronMansIronButt · 09/05/2018 12:56

If Merkel had not of opened Europe's doors then we wouldn't be having this thread

Yeah, if only those fucking Syrians etc had stayed where they were to get bombed or starve, we would never had dreamed up such a monumentally stupid idea like Brexit!

Hmm
A4710Rider · 09/05/2018 12:57

It would appear that I'm the only one here that has actually taken the time to read the GFA.

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 12:57

Lweji So AM says she hopes the U.K. will stay, then adds you will get a raw deal if it leaves, That makes me feel wanted

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 12:58

You haven’t mentioned anything that is in the GFA? You also haven’t responded to any of the links or comments about the content of the GFA.
