To wish the EU would throw us a bone so we can cancel Brexit

They don't want us to leave. We don't want to leave. So what could Macron'n'Merkel offer us so we can say "go on, we'll stay together for the sake of the kids".

@A4710Rider we have to pay it, it's a commitment we made under our existing trade deal.

Every other country is watching to see what we do with the EU, and some of the big ones won't sign with us until the EU end state is known. If we renege on a financial commitment we made at the beginning of this budget cycle we are going to be seen and face punitive terms elsewhere.

No one wants to strike a bargain with someone who says they won't pay what they agreed because their voters don't like you.

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 18:09

Why would they need one

Most of Ireland's imports and exports go through the UK. Do you think we're just going to let Ireland have free run of the place for their EU exports? Do you? Especially the way they've behaved towards us....

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 18:10

That's fine then, Kate. I guess the EU and Ireland will be thinking of building a new bridge to connect Ireland and the European mainland.

Twistofanxiety · 08/05/2018 18:10

I think a proportion of those who voted to leave would have voted to remain if there had a meaningful promise of EC reform and transparency. Given that the vote was so close, would that have made a difference do you think?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 18:11

yeah you should read a history book and see how Britain has been treating Ireland for 800 years. Fool.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 08/05/2018 18:11

Smeddum

Your naivity astonishes me - most power brokers in ni have terrorism links...

But back to the thread - your cheerleading of the eu is bizarre. Are you actually a British citizen? If Brexit is such a bad idea, wouldn’t you want to see the best of a bad job?

I’m pretty sure if you were offered either a Brexit that worked or a Brexit that caused catastrophe you would rather the latter just so you could say ‘told you so’

Ps - hope this post isn’t too bigoted or hateful for you. I know how that rankles you.

Metoodear · 08/05/2018 18:12

We do want to leave or we wouldn’t have voted for it

You mean the middle classes who think they no better don’t want to leave 🙄

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 18:12

I think a proportion of those who voted to leave would have voted to remain if there had a meaningful promise of EC reform and transparency. Given that the vote was so close, would that have made a difference do you think

Definitely. It was things like Merkel throwing open the doors to Europe that made the difference. If she hadn't of done that, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 18:13

Especially the way they've behaved towards us....

You’re not serious. You can’t be serious? You’re a Brit (English?) pissed off with Ireland because of how you perceive they’ve treated Britain? That’s mind blowing. I’m actually lost for words.

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 18:13

yeah you should read a history book and see how Britain has been treating Ireland for 800 years

Nothing to do with me and of little relevance to today's discussion I'm afraid.

keyboardkate · 08/05/2018 18:13

A471,

Admittedly the transport of Ireland's goods to the EU will require a rethink. But they have purchased a humungous boat that will by pass UK.

No drivers. They leave their containers at Dublin Port, and others pick them up on mainland Europe.

It is called "A bit of planning!" And will avoid all the mess at Dover and elsewhere.

UK is a huge market for ROI no doubt, but the export boards and advisers in Ireland have planned for tariffs and have upped their game WRT selling directly to the mainland of Europe. ROI is canny and have planned for this.

Anyway, I am sure UK has planned very well for all the import tariffs from mainland EU post Brexit hasn't it?

IronMansIronButt · 08/05/2018 18:14

Especially the way they've behaved towards us

Bemused, but friendly and accomodating? Yeah, the bastards! Hmm

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 18:14

Says so on my red passport. I’m not championing them, I just don’t see why they owe us anything after the electorate pretty much told them to fuck off. Expecting anything else is ludicrous.

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 18:15

Comprehension isn't your strong point, is it? I'm referring to the way Ireland's politicians have behaved in cohorts with the EU.

What in the name of the sweet baby Jesus are you on about. Britain thought it could push Ireland to fall into line as it has so often done. Totally forgetting that Ireland, is part of the EU, and so is the much bigger power. The fact is that Ireland is not going to do any deal that hurts Ireland. Brexit is Britain's stupid idea and Ireland is just not willing to suffer for that stupidity. And as the much more powerful side in this negotiation, Ireland doesn't have to.

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 18:16

Made me laugh. I'm off now, toodle pip.

IronMansIronButt · 08/05/2018 18:16

Again, bemused, amused but friendly and accomodating? You know Brexit is costing Ireland a fucking fortune, all because of the UK, not to mention the shit heap caused to NI and the border? You are lucky they have been as nice as they have about it.

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 18:16

I’ve reported you as a troll

Then you're an extremely sad person.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 18:17

@A4710Rider my comprehension is a problem?

You want the EU to sort out a deal, while demanding UK autonomy.

You have no understanding of NIrish/Irish/British politics over the last 800 years and can’t understand why there’s an issue.

You think the EU should do as they’re told by the people who’ve roundly rejected them because we said so.

And I’m the one with comprehension issues? Hahahahaha.

Metoodear · 08/05/2018 18:17

this and I am afraid the sweeping under the carpet of the sexual attacks of in incoming population and the fact that nearly all the terror attacks that have happened recently have been people who they have let in

I don’t care what anyone says the middle classes are not bully me into thinking you don’t need to vet

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 18:17

Absolutely.

I think transparency and an actual plan would have led to a very different result.

Metoodear · 08/05/2018 18:19

Who comes in and check their not lying about their age

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 18:19

Oh and the vast majority of terrorist attacks on UK soil at least, were committed by people born here, so that argument isn’t valid either.
