To wish the EU would throw us a bone so we can cancel Brexit

They don't want us to leave. We don't want to leave. So what could Macron'n'Merkel offer us so we can say "go on, we'll stay together for the sake of the kids".

Why is it instead deliberately exploiting old wounds (northern Ireland) and stoking confusion over customs agreements?

It isn’t, the UK are the ones that neglected to put any plans in place for that. And they’re not “old wounds” they’re very current, it’s not my fault you don’t understand that.

Riddle me this - if the eu is as benevolent as you think it is then why isn’t it staying out of politics and simply insisting the uk must hard Brexit?

Expecting a group of political leaders to stay out of politics is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever. As for not forcing hard Brexit, did it occur to you that maybe, just maybe they don’t want to see the whole of the UK suffer for its own governmental incompetence?

You seem to be adamant that the EU is a malevolent force with negative intentions, but the UK government has nothing. No plan, no leverage, no bargaining chips, no way of getting any kind of deal, no contingency plan. Nothing.

Brexiteers telling remainers to leave shows they have no intention of trying to unify the country

It was a Remainer who started it, get some basic comprehension skills, please.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 17:41

*ever heard that should read.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 08/05/2018 17:41

Brexiteers telling remainers to leave shows they have no intention of trying to unify the country. Clearly they thrive on division and sowing hate.

Or they might be stoking people in a trolly way to keep the thread active.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 17:42

It was a Remainer who started it, get some basic comprehension skills, please

Actually it wasn’t. I was told to leave pages back. But then since we’re over the age of 5, “he started it” isn’t really a valid argument is it? Anyone telling someone else to get out of their own country is a twat, however they voted.

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/05/2018 17:42

GhostofFrankGrimes

But ironman is a remainer. So why aren't you berating them?

IronMansIronButt · 08/05/2018 17:42

No - Ireland and the eu are seeking to corner the uk and weaken our negotiating hand

Sure love. That's how it works. As if the hand could BE any weaker than it is already!!!!

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 17:43

No - Ireland and the eu are seeking to corner the uk and weaken our negotiating hand

Whaaaaaat?

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 17:43

I like what the DUP said about the Border issue.

They said the EU should be helping to come up with a suggestion, get around the table and talk about things.

....and not just saying "NO" to every suggestion the UK comes up with - it's now obvious what they are trying to do and I'd say to Ireland....it's probably not best to treat your largest trading partner this way....it could backfire on you.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 17:45

And you wonder why intolerance is the abiding impression of the Leave campaign. Good grief.

You like what the DUP said? They’re horrendous. Every single last one of them is poison.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 17:45

No - Ireland and the eu are seeking to corner the uk and weaken our negotiating hand

TBF, the UK's hand was weak from day one and it had nothing to do with the EU.

This is all about money or, more specifically, how much money the eu can extract from us going forward.

The settlement figure has been agreed I'd be more worried about the £40 billion of tax payers money needed to implement Brexit.

The eu are not a disinterested player here - they are the opposition

"opposition" is divisive language. 48% do not see the EU as opposition. Brexiteers are going to look very isolated. And more angry.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 08/05/2018 17:45

Smeddum - something cogent please?

Explain to me why the eu aren’t trying to weaken our hand ahead of formal Brexit?

keyboardkate · 08/05/2018 17:45

Apologies in advance. But I doubt many Leave voters realised that NI was actually a part of the UK to begin with! I know many did, but a large cohort were surprised at the DUP being invited to prop up May, and then the problems of the Border emerged. Then the penny dropped.

Now you many tell me I am bonkers, but that's the reality.

The GFA is an INTERNATIONAL agreement. The EU were not involved in its negotiation at all, but endorsed it when it was finalised.

It has stood strong since 1998. No one wants to see it disrupted. An appalling vista may await. But anyway. Just saying.

Be careful what you wish for.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 17:46

The DUP didn't support the GFA so perhaps their position on the border is somewhat compromised?

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 17:47

You like what the DUP said? They’re horrendous. Every single last one of them is poison

Have you ever heard of the concept; IRONY?

Cau'se you're intolerant at all, are ya?

IronMansIronButt · 08/05/2018 17:47

..and not just saying "NO" to every suggestion the UK comes up with

Only because the suggestions are almost as stupid as the answers on this thread.

I'd say to Ireland....it's probably not best to treat your largest trading partner this way....it could backfire on you

The irony is epic! Who is the UK's biggest trading partner then? It wouldn't be....the EU would it? Better think about who you are threatening there....

jugglingsatsumas · 08/05/2018 17:48

EU anti-discrimination laws prevent the UK from keeping out EU immigrants, not hiring them, etc.. In 2004 the UK decided nOt to impose restrictions on migrants from newly joined member countries. Other countries did. Whose fault is that?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 17:49

Leaver outrage as EU refuses to roll over like fluffy little kitten wanting its belly rubbed...

TomRavenscroft · 08/05/2018 17:49

They said the EU should be helping to come up with a suggestion, get around the table and talk about things...and not just saying "NO" to every suggestion the UK comes up with

The EU ARE round the table. One or other representative is forever being photographed trudging in or out of Number 10, looking increasingly weary after yet another round of hearing empty 'Brexit means Brexit'/'deep and special union'/innovative border' tripe.

The reason they keep saying no is because every 'suggestion' the UK comes up with is unworkable.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 17:50

Explain to me why the eu aren’t trying to weaken our hand ahead of formal Brexit?

I didn’t say they weren’t. Why wouldn’t they? Why on earth do you think they owe us anything else??? We’ve basically just said “fuck you, we’re leaving because we hate you and everything you stand for.” Why do you think they would owe us anything?

I said that the NI/Ireland border wasn’t their doing and it wasn’t. The UK government knew exactly the problems it would cause and didn’t plan for them. Not the EUs responsibility.

Aw bless, you used a word in the correct context in a sentence and everything! Well done you!

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 17:50

The irony is epic

It isn't, we voted to leave,.

Ireland's politicians need to tread carefully and don't burn their bridges.

A4710Rider · 08/05/2018 17:51

The EU ARE round the table

....so what suggestions have they made?

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 17:51

@A4710Rider intolerant of what? Stupidity and bigotry that has very real consequences? Yup, I’m intolerant of that. Always will be. Frankly anyone who supports the shitshow that is the DUP has an absolute cheek having a go at anyone else. They’re divisive, hateful and have links to terrorism.

TomRavenscroft · 08/05/2018 17:52

A4710Rider, it's not up to them to come up with suggestions or solutions. As a great and powerful sovereign nation, the UK ought to be able to come up with the answers, no?
