To wish the EU would throw us a bone so we can cancel Brexit

Crikeyisunderused · 08/05/2018 07:36

They don't want us to leave. We don't want to leave. So what could Macron'n'Merkel offer us so we can say "go on, we'll stay together for the sake of the kids".

Oblomov18 · 08/05/2018 14:35

I can't see EU throwing us a bone. They aren't even that bothered if we leave are they?

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 14:35

I'd love to see a united Ireland but without the DUP your beloved Tories will collapse

Yup, some people are too stupid to realise it though.

Elendon · 08/05/2018 14:35

imagine I am talking very... slowly...

I for one don't need to imagine you are talking very slowly...

Heyduggeesflipflop · 08/05/2018 14:36

Better ‘my beloved tories’ than the alternative

jugglingsatsumas · 08/05/2018 14:38

Better ‘my beloved tories’ than the alternative

This obviously went right over your head....

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 14:38

Just think - then you would get your own Scottish internet social media forum to whine in!

Are "foreigners" being banned from Brexit friendly internet forums? Perhaps you could apply Chinese style internet censorship in Brexit Britain England. Closer to communism that you think Hey. Grin

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 14:40

I hope your lot do eventually leave the union (assuming they can afford it)

Your lot? You’re a bigot and a xenophobe and you’re not even vaguely embarrassed are you? You should be, because you’ve shown yourself right up on this thread.

I don’t really care what you think, I want independence because I don’t trust Westminster to have Scotland’s best interests at heart, especially with the Tories in power. Because there are actual facts proving the damage that has been done and Westminster does have ultimate control over the Scottish government and day to day real life consequences for Scotland. Unlike your mythical interpretation of the impact Brussels has beyond immigration.

Your prejudice and bigotry is highly unpleasant, to the point where I’d imagine people who voted to Leave because of research and genuine reasons would be embarrassed by the bile you spout.

Anyone who uses “your lot” in a derogatory way negates their argument, mostly because it’s a fairly good indicator they’re talking shite.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 14:41

Better ‘my beloved tories’ than the alternative

You actually believe that don’t you? That’s hilarious. And really quite sad.

Somerville · 08/05/2018 14:41

The wilful ignorance and downright lies about Ireland continues to grow, and is increasingly stoking division. Sad

It took over a decade of serious negotiation for the hard border to be removed and the current solution implemented - where the border is entirely invisible and there is considerable all-Ireland cooperation covering healthcare, business, farming etc etc... It is also intrinsically bound up with the new rights of British and Irish citizens to be equally well treated.

There has been attempts at contravention after contravention of the GFA in recent months by this government. In a recent one, which was just ruled on and went against the government, the U.K. tried to hire border staff for NI and said they must have British passports rather than Irish. Having lost this, it is clear yet again that the Leave campaign offered a referendum on an issue they cannot control - that border cannot be enforced because of the GFA, which was (and still is) the will of the people.

With an open land border with the EU, we cannot set our own tariffs and change our product standards and all the rest of the ways that Brexiters want to come out of alignment. And Brexiters know it, hence the undermining of the GFA.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 14:42

Again @Somerville has it nailed.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/05/2018 14:43

Completely agree Smeddum

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 14:46

Actually I find the people who are dismissive of the border issue in NI/Ireland extremely arrogant. Because they haven’t done their research, haven’t chosen to understand why it is not at all straightforward, and is (for the reasons Somerville laid out far more articulately than I could) an extremely contentious and painful issue.

It’s absolute arrogance. These are the same people who don’t see the problem with the DUP because they know nothing about them.

jugglingsatsumas · 08/05/2018 14:50

Smeddum - there is a real paradox in a lot of Leavers' arguments. On the one hand, they don't want to hear from experts in the various relevant fields. On the other hand they just want someone else to sort it all out for them as they don't want to engage with all the nitty gritty details - or, god forbid, be told that something is not possible. It is not clear to me who this "someone else" is supposed to be.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 14:53

@jugglingsatsumas I think the same tbh. As I said upthread, I’m sure that not all Leave voters are the xenophobic, hateful, bitter, angry and exclusionary types on here. But the sad fact is those ones seem to have the loudest voices, even if what they’re saying makes no sense.

I don’t want a load of bigots thinking they can speak for me, but you can’t enter into a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent so trying to talk sense into someone that doesn’t have any to start with is pretty wearing.

Allreadygone · 08/05/2018 14:58

The pain and suffering that has gone on for so many years around the 'Irish Question' is surely a good reason to be inclined to remain. I am not suggesting that EU negotiations are perfect, far from it and as an institution it needs a good shake up but away from the politics, surprisingly most people just 'get on with life'. Everyone grumbles about something but until it materially affects your life is not important.
Politics SHOULD be about getting the best deal and quality of life for as many as possible, not a 'point scoring' free for all.

FairyCrumbs · 08/05/2018 15:05

All the people who I know who voted leave read The Sun, says it all really.

Elendon · 08/05/2018 15:06

How many Tory constituencies voted to remain in the EU referendum?

Answer here:

www.quora.com/How-many-Tory-constituencies-voted-remain-in-the-Brexit-referendum

For the hard of understanding the simple answer is:

'We don’t know, because the vote was counted at a council area level, and councils are not the same as Parliamentary constituencies.'

Some estimate: 77% of Conservative and 76% of Labour seats voting Leave.

This is of course just England.

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 15:07

All the people who I know who voted leave read The Sun, says it all really

It speaks volumes.

Battleax · 08/05/2018 15:08

All the people who I know who voted leave read The Sun, says it all really

What does it say? That you know a lot of red top readers?

Elendon · 08/05/2018 15:10

This is of course just England And that seems to be all that matters to those who did vote Leave. All the other countries in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland seem to be ignored.

Brilliant summary Somerville

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 15:11

And that seems to be all that matters to those who did vote Leave. All the other countries in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland seem to be ignored

It’s how the majority I’ve spoken to/heard from on here feel.

Elendon · 08/05/2018 15:11

That you know a lot of red top readers?

Some people have no option when it comes to family and their place of work Battleax

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 08/05/2018 15:13

All the people who I know who voted leave read The Sun, says it all really.

That just tells us your social demographic. Grin

I don't know anyone that reads The Sun (not including tradesmen that do work for me).

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 08/05/2018 15:14

All the other countries in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland seem to be ignored.

But that's the democracy you keep banging on about.

Not working for you? Have a whine..... Wine

Smeddum · 08/05/2018 15:14

I don't know anyone that reads The Sun (not including tradesmen that do work for me)

Neither do I, but I’ve read enough about the kind of paper it is to understand the views of people who read it. I’ve not read it, because I’m old enough to remember Hillsborough. I also don’t really fancy paying to read a load of shite.
