Takeaway spending

How much do you spend per week of month on takeaways and how many do you have a month?

I'm thinking of cutting down to save money and wondered how much others spent/have..

Fish and chips if at the seaside on holiday. Otherwise never. DP makes a mean curry. Might buy a sandwich in town twice a month if I forget to bring them to work.

Tv programme last week said it was 12 takeaways per month on average which I thought was unlikely as I imagined most people get them once or twice a week max (so up to 8 a month) and some like us get them rarely. But if that includes sandwiches etc at lunchtime that’s more understandable.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 07/05/2018 16:31

Once a month, maybe twice a month now and then. We probably spend £20 each time for 2 of us.

sleepingbaby1125 · 07/05/2018 16:45

One every 3 months, about £20 for two of us. Tend to do pizza or omelette or poached egg on toast instead, if feeling lazy about cooking.

However, a friend has 4 every week as they don't like to cook!

DaphneduM · 07/05/2018 16:55

When we were both working, Friday night was always either a Chinese or Indian. It gave us the 'Friday feeling', a treat after a hard week's work - and a sigh of relief and celebration if we'd got to Friday without some massive problem work-wise - both worked in stressful public sector jobs. Now - retired - and shock, horror, yes we spend about £120 - £150 per month. Takeaways are part of our routine more than ever, Thursdays fish and chips, Saturday usually Indian takeaway. We live in the country, it's a beautiful drive to the takeaways in the next large village - we are supporting local businesses too. I like to think I'm a good cook, but these meals are totally unique and cannot be replicated at home. I also usually have lunch out once a week with a friend - again the pleasure of something different, good company and supporting the local economy. We are also normal weight wise!!!!!

Friday night is takeaway night.

Dcs have KFC or Dominos or Taco Bell. Me and dp have indian. Probably £30 for all of them.

Then we might have fish and chips once a fortnight for saturday lunch. Its about £15 for all of us. I could not buy 2 huge pieces of cod, and then do chips and peas and whatever else wr have with it for what ot costs. Then we have sandwiches or something else light for tea.

We also have a takeaway occasionally if we have been busy. Or like today is a bank holiday so we are having thai. Maybe once a month a dominos. Or mcdonalds.

We can afford it and it makes life a bit easier and it's something to look forward to. We rarely go out these days and very rarely eat out so a takeaway is a treat.

I can cook most things as nice or nicer than takeout apart from Indian. Which is why it is our friday night treat.

Baylis · 07/05/2018 17:22

About £150-200 a month, and that's between myself and OH. We have a couple a week, always on a Saturday.

I feel it is quite a lot of money to spend however I enjoy not having to cook and we don't smoke or drink so see it as our "treat". We are also both slim and exercise regularly so I don't feel too bad about it.

Eggzandbacon · 07/05/2018 17:25

Very rarely, we’ve realised we don’t enjoy them much. I occasionally buy DD a pizza.

I remember DH trying to explain to his brother how much he was spending. They get a takeaway (for 4) twice a week plus taking kids to McDs. He couldn’t see it was the price of a holiday he was wasting (and he was complaining he could never afford one).

MrsLindor

This thread is a good example of MN not being reflective of the general public either that or on the whole people who are more reflective aren't answering.

Agree with this in the three takeawaynear me, the staff always look rushed iff their feet.

Also some people may think a steak and a lamb are a waste of money, the thought of them actually makes me feel a little sick. Give me a margherita pizza anyday.

JJS888 · 07/05/2018 17:36

Probably £50 a week or more when I'm offshore and nobody cooks. In ME and cheap, also cook what we want rather than a fatty menu.
Pizza Hut etc, probably more like £50 a month

Moonsugar · 07/05/2018 17:37

No, not a typo. Family of 5, kids aged between 9-15 so weekly cost is in the region of £30-40 for one takeaway.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/05/2018 17:38

Thanks for replying and clarifying

Neverender · 07/05/2018 17:38

Once or twice a month. About £20 a go.

mindutopia · 07/05/2018 17:40

I spend maybe £10-15 a month on coffee. We might get a takeaway once every 2-3 months, which costs maybe £30. We live about 25 minutes from town in the middle of nowhere so it’s a rare luxury.

Crispbutty · 07/05/2018 17:40

probably two a week (chinese and an indian) averaging £25 a time, so £200 a month ish.. but we can afford it, and I work as a chef so coming home and cooking is not what I want to do every night.

when we had a lot less money to spare we rarely got a takeaway and would improvise with lidl pizzas or make a curry..

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/05/2018 17:41

I’m glad you started this thread as I’ve never thought about the fact we spend £800 a month on eating out Blush

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/05/2018 17:42

How many of you is the “we”
Do you go expensive restaurants?

VileyRose · 07/05/2018 17:44

35 ish a month

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/05/2018 17:44

lipstick was that to me?

AnneProtheroe · 07/05/2018 17:46

We have a chip shop which is open for a couple of hours twice a week and that's it. We usually remember it after it's closed! We're 3 miles drive from the nearest pub which has just started doing takeaway fish & chips, nothing delivers here, so we spend zero on takeaway. Sad

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/05/2018 17:49

Yes, NotUmbongoUnchained. I’m just curious how it stacks up

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/05/2018 17:52

Thursday nights is date night, me and DH go to restaurant, 3 courses, couple bottles of wine is easily 100quid.
Friday nights is the night we take the kids out as we don’t see them much during the week. Can be between 20-50 depending on where they choose to go, and Saturday nights we get takeaways to eat with a film. Another 50 odd quid.

Oly5 · 07/05/2018 17:53

Zero but we do eat in restaurants.. about £130 a month

FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends · 07/05/2018 17:54

Probably £100-150 a month

I'm an excellent cook and I cook everything from scratch. But I love takeaways. What's the big deal?

Peanutbuttercups21 · 07/05/2018 17:55

We used to do takeaway 3 times a week Grin

Now a bit less!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/05/2018 17:57
