Takeaway spending

Bananaramaboat123 · 07/05/2018 13:05

How much do you spend per week of month on takeaways and how many do you have a month?

I'm thinking of cutting down to save money and wondered how much others spent/have..

OP posts:

But it’s not pissing money away if you like the takeaway you purchase
Not everyone wants to eke soup, sandwiches, risotto, roast dinner out of a £4.99 chicken

Moonsugar · 07/05/2018 15:38

About £120-150 a month.

Friday night is takeaway night but as the kids get older and eat more its getting quite expensive!

I keep saying we need to cut back, but as we rarely go out and I do 100% of the cooking I'm struggling to actually stop!

UndomesticHousewife · 07/05/2018 15:39

Interesting thread.
We have a takeaway once a week on the weekend.
Sometimes I can't be bothered cooking so we get something during the week but not every week.
When dc were little we didn't have as many.
I don't know anyone that has a takeaway only once a year, most if not everyone I know has a takeaway of some sort once a week!!

jarhead123 · 07/05/2018 15:39

Once a month maximum, £30 approx

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/05/2018 15:40

About £120-150 a month. Is that a typo? That’s a huge amount of money

rookiemere · 07/05/2018 15:40

We get takeaway that once a month or so because a) it's nice not to have to cook b) we can afford it and c) I can't make Indian sauces as well as the good Indian places can - or to be fair - I can make good Indian dishes but it requires overnight marinading and a lot of herbs, spices and effort.

user1493413286 · 07/05/2018 15:41

Once or twice a month at £15ish a time for two of us. We aren’t easily able to go out with kids and it’s a nice treat

OhPuddleducks · 07/05/2018 15:45

We probably get one every two or three months as a treat. We used to get more but it was costing loads so I reckon you will feel the benefit if you cut down - we definitely did. Also I crave them less now we order them in less - I really notice the fat and salt content.

BitchQueen90 · 07/05/2018 15:46

Have takeaway once a month and spend no more than £20, just myself and DS.

Jojoanna · 07/05/2018 15:47

0 never have takeaways

rookiemere · 07/05/2018 15:47

Lipstick - that seems like rather a pointed question and remark.

We don't spend much on takeaways, but we do go out for meals - at an absolute minimum we'd go out once or twice a month and we'd easily spend £100+ on that.

I don't really get people that spend loads on takeaway pizza though - that's the one thing where you can buy it ready prepared in the supermarket and bung it in the oven for 1/4 the price of Dominos or whatever and it tastes no different.

bananafish81 · 07/05/2018 15:48

*For £30 we can have good sirloins and all the trimmings. A lush leg of lamb for about £22. Again all the trimmings.

Why do people piss money away on poor quality, u healthy food?*

I don't like cooking and I'm a crap cook

We ordered in last night - I had sea bass with crushed potatoes and roast veg, DH had braised lamb shank with gratin potatoes and spinach.

It was great quality and very tasty! If we hadn't had takeaway it would have been something like a jacket potato or beans on toast - the takeaway was definitely our preferred option

We hate cooking, have lots of great restaurants nearby who deliver, and we're fortunate enough to be able to afford this luxury. You might see it as pissing money away but in our household we don't - no one's forcing you to order takeaways so not sure why anyone else's choices would affect you?

Petitepamplemousse · 07/05/2018 15:48

Zero but I live alone, so if I’m feeling lazy I’ll just make scrambled egg on toast for dinner. It might be different if I had to cook for a family.

bananafish81 · 07/05/2018 15:51

About £120-150 a month. Is that a typo? That’s a huge amount of money

We spend that easily. £30 a week, once a week = £120 a month

RiddleyW · 07/05/2018 15:51

We have about one every six weeks or so I think. When we do we spend a lot, maybe £40 for me DH and a 3 year old. Unless we get fish and chips that’s about £20 I think.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/05/2018 15:52

It’s not pointed in the least,it’s a direct query.thats how forums work
And yes I’ve expressed a subjective POV that’s a lot of money.imo it is a lot
Equally Moonsugar can reply and say yes it’s £150 and no it’s not a huge amount
And frankly that’ll be that.im not going to doorstep moonsugar & take her debit card

krustykittens · 07/05/2018 16:07

Who says takeaway food has to be poor quality and unhealthy? There is a world of difference between ordering takeout from Domino's or from a really good Chinese restaurant. You get what you pay for, which is why our takeaway bill is quite high.

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/05/2018 16:07

About once a month f&c , Chinese or Indian . So £12-50 for three of us.

grasspigeons · 07/05/2018 16:19

once a month for 4 of us £25.

its the not having to do the washing up and have the food in that appeals. The quality of the food is variable and very often the supermarket version is better.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 07/05/2018 16:20

We have a takeaway every Saturday night costing about £15-£20. However Dh and i will often make ourselves a steak instead while the dc enjoy their McDonald's or kebab

SecretIsland · 07/05/2018 16:22

Why do people piss money away on poor quality, u healthy food?

Because it tastes fucking amazing?

I spend probably 14 nights out of 15 eating made from scratch healthy meals. In general we all eat very very well.

On that 15th night I bloody love a Chinese/Indian/Japanese/kebab/ KFC.

gamerwidow · 07/05/2018 16:27

Why do people piss money away on poor quality, u healthy food

  • because they like it
  • because they don't want to cook
  • because they don't want to have to wash up loads of pots

I used to enjoy experimenting with new recipes and spending time cooking pre DC. These days I'm so tired after a week at work plus the school run etc. I'm grateful for a night off.

FriendlyOcelot · 07/05/2018 16:29

They make me feel ill for about three days (clean eater with ibs here so anything with msg and general shit in it makes me feel quite ill) so very rarely. I’ve become less tolerant of them as I’ve got older. When the children were small we’d get one a month as a treat and spend about £25. On the rare occasions that we get one (twice a year?) as a family - £40 at a time.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 07/05/2018 16:30

God yes i shop carefully in Lidl and cook nice meals every night of the week. Caribbean African Italian and English dishes. My dc seem to like my cooking as does dh but its a fun treat to have a takeaway with a movie together and the money i save in Lidl helps us afford it. But dh and i are happy to cook a nice steak or bit of fish instead, that's also a nice treat

FriendlyOcelot · 07/05/2018 16:30

I prefer to spend the money on a nice chateaubriand and bottle of red wine!
