Have you ever drunk alcohol in the morning?

I have a friend staying. We had wine last night and there was about a glass left in the bottle. MY FRIEND HAS JUST DRUNK IT FOR BREAKFAST!

This isn’t normal is it?!

On Christmas day perhaps. And perhaps a shot of whisky on the porridge on a particularly cold winter (weekend) day.
The only time I have ever drunk wine on the morning was at Glastonbury in a sodden muddy tent when the alternative would have been a 20 minute trudge through mud . And it didn't taste nice at all.

Blizzardagain · 06/05/2018 14:52

On my honeymoon. They served sparkling wine with breakfast. That's it.

Echobelly · 06/05/2018 14:55

I really can't face booze in the morning, or even in the early afternoon unless with lunch.

I think my husband has been known to finish of a last glass of wine in the morning, but maybe not quite for breakfast!

Pikehau · 06/05/2018 15:18

Probably as a student!

Champagne for breakfast one day again once dcs grown up!

Had an ex bf who’s family had champagne with their fruit platter then red for the fry “sausage wine” haha only special occasions!!

goose1964 · 06/05/2018 15:31

Christmas Day, wedding day, DDs wedding Day, on holiday but not usually , but we had a friend staying once who finished his curry and lager for breakfast

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 06/05/2018 15:42

Christmas, weddings, occasional Sundays (sherry before lunch). But none of those occasions were first thing in the morning - 11 am or after.

nibblingandbiting · 06/05/2018 15:43

Yea I have. I’ve knock back a shot of something with my first coffee. Woke up really thirsty wanting something cold not
Tap cold and there’s only been fizzy wine,
Or champagne in the fridge.
Then there’s Weddings. Certain birthdays. New years eve and day. Times that been traumatic. Holidays. Airports. And just because.

I don’t have an issue with alcohol. Had a drink this weekend. Before that earlier this year

Andromeida59 · 06/05/2018 15:44

I do occasionally if we're on holiday or if it's a special occasion. Otherwise, no.

NCJaneDoeNut · 06/05/2018 15:53

I’ve done what your friend did - finish the remainder the next morning. Maybe 2 or 3 times I year. I hardly drink otherwise, maybe once a month.

fussychica · 06/05/2018 15:54

Buck's Fizz on special birthdays and perhaps once or twice the same at Christmas or early wedding.

Sorry just don't get the drinking at the airport thing that is so popular now. Yes you're on holiday but blimey you must be pretty desperate for booze if you have a pint or a g&t before most folk have had a cup of tea!

UnicornRainbowColours · 06/05/2018 15:55

Christmas Day, airport etc

megletthesecond · 06/05/2018 15:56

No. I wouldn't even do it at festivals.

resetEntries · 06/05/2018 16:32

"I wouldn't even do it at festivals."

Of course not.

Salty snacks and water sipped (not drunk quickly).

Thebluedog · 06/05/2018 16:34

Airports where time zones don’t count

Thebluedog · 06/05/2018 16:34

Oh yeah and Christmas

Thebluedog · 06/05/2018 16:34

Oh ok and when we go to watch the racing without the dc

mindutopia · 06/05/2018 16:36

Not usually before 11, so depends on what time breakfast is. But there have been exceptions to the rule (airport, watching US election results, I’m American) when I’ve started drinking at 6/7am. But that’s not every weekend. Usually not before 11 or 10:30am at a stretch.

User12879923378 · 06/05/2018 16:38

I think I once had a mimosa with brunch in California and I think I've occasionally had Bucks Fizz with breakfast but I really can't imagine drinking a glass of wine at breakfast time even if it was Christmas in California.

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/05/2018 16:40

I've done it once. Christmas Day 1998. Never before and never since. I went to bed for a nap by 11 am and was rather disoriented for the rest of the day.

I'm not a big drinker though, so I don't really know if it might be "normal" for other people. It doesn't seem normal or healthy to me, but i suppose we all have things we do that aren't necessarily healthy or normal like eating big bags of crisps on the way to work

Scribblegirl · 06/05/2018 16:41

Airport and holiday, the odd bottomless brunch, music festivals, and of course the mornings where we haven't gone to bed yet Wink If I drink before lunch/at lunch I'm usually asleep by 5pm mind (had a pint of cider with lunch today and had a half hour nap at 3...)

One memorable New Year's Day we drank red wine with breakfast and continued into the day, lounging around my friend's house. That was a great day.

Said friend got pregnant later that year and now gets twatted on half a shandy, so it doesn't last forever Grin

myusernameisnotmyusername · 06/05/2018 16:42

I've drunk it at a festival early in the morning- beer and coffee together! But could never drink the dregs of last nights alcohol! That's pretty grim.

Crunchymum · 06/05/2018 16:43

These days. No. Not even Bucks Fizz on Xmas day (I do have a few drinks with dinner but if I started in the morning I wouldn't get through the day and that would be pretty crap for my kids Grin)

Haven't been on a stupid early flight for years so my airport drinking is always at a decent hour (back in the day I would drink at the airport anytime - it was the law!! Would often carry on once on the plane as well Shock)

Used to morning drink at festivals..

First time I met my DP well "re-met" him, we were childhood sweethearts we ended up sitting up all night drinking and talking (we met in a late night bar and we went to an after party at my mates house). When we left my mates house early the next day we went back to his place. It was a beautiful summer's morning, so we had a few beers in his garden before going up to bed and passing out for 12 hours!!! Oh happy days....

Mightymucks · 06/05/2018 16:44

Rare occasions. Morning drinking is actually on the AAs list of signs of alcoholism. If he drinks a lot, drinks alone and gets very drunk too he may well have a problem.

LovelySouffle · 06/05/2018 16:45

Only thing that gets you through reading AIBU half the time

Bluntness100 · 06/05/2018 16:47

Yes, like most others, champagne breakfasts and stayed up to the wee small hours.

But I've never got out of bed and knocked back a glass of red wine in my dressing gow just because it was there and to avoid wasting it..

I suspect your friend does have an issue with alcohol because that's honestly not normal. It would also make most folks a bit queasy.

And quite frankly wine doesn't go off quickly, so there was no reason for her to drink it. As such the "not wasting it"excuse is bullshit.

Seriously, cmon, who drinks a glass of red wine as soon as they are up to avoid wasting it. The answer is someone with a booze problem.
